I've always wrapped a monkey knot (when changing from X,Y, or Z) by crossing to the farthest wrap first, instead of the nearest. When I do that, both my ends come out in the same spot. So there is no need to Pass the tail end under wraps to reach the other end. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to explain without a picture.

Being an old Navy man. A monkey's fist was tied onto the end of a line similar to clothes line...Had a much larger core. the other end of the line was tied to the bight of the ship's mooring line. So when the ship pulls up to the dock, a Boatswain's Mate would heave the line with the monkey's fist to a crew on the dock and they would proceed to pull the ship's mooring line over, hopefully keeping it out of the water.

That thing brings back a lot of happy memories! In my younger years I was a Linesman for a commercial ferry company with many and varied duties, but my main job (other than Customs paperwork) was tying up the vessels as they arrived. We used to call those knots Monkey Nuts, they were much bigger though and were attached to the end of a long line of rope called the Heaving Line. You wind the rope up like a Lasso, making sure to have a firm grip on your end of the rope, and with a firm swing you could launch that thing right into the hands of vessel engineers at a distance of 30ft (after a _lot_ of practice), the crew attaches it to one of the main heavy mooring lines and then you pull both lines back in and tie the vessel up (usually four mooring lines in total). The new guys always got laughed at by the French vessel crews, those things can go flying in any direction until you get the knack. We had a lot of banter, despite the language barrier, lol There were a lot of tears when that company went under, we all miss that job a lot, we were like a large dysfunctional yet loving family, lol Starting to feel sad now, lol, I’m off Happy New Year all! 🍻

Just made this .... total beginner to having a finished product that I am proud of in about 3 hours. Had to redo the monkey fist about 6 times to figure out which way to twist on the turns. You need to have just the right amount of wraps for it to look good. Did 4 wraps on a 1 inch ball and you actually need 5 for it look good I think. Thanks for the vid.
@belden007
@belden007 Год назад
I was thinking 5 too. I I may try that. I’ve been messing with the 4 wraps and can’t seem to get it to cover the whole ball.
@Asertix357
@Asertix357 5 месяцев назад
@@belden007 I'm at a complete loss on this video. I've executed the technique before, but it takes 5 passes on a 1" ball to completely cover it. 4 passes will cover a 3/4" ball, but the diamond knot on top is too small to be proportional to a 3/4" ball. The ball in the video is in proportion to the split keyring included. Which makes it very annoying to me because I've wanted to produce a near-exact replica of this stinger since I first found the video three years ago.

I started putting bouncy balls instead of ball bearings 20 something years ago. Monkeys fists look cool, tie on to many tools/items and make it so the end won’t slip through your hand. I would put a loop large enough to put my hand through before the monkeys fist knot. It was used to wrap around our wrists so we didn’t drop the tool attached when working up high. You get hit once with that ball bearing it’ll change your mind…. When it’s hanging out of your pocket it’ll swing around and get you in the sweet spot seemingly every time. 😆

Excellent tutorial! (Here's a tip.) If you cut the other 2 strands of paracord right before the snake knot, the lobster hook will be attached much better. It won't take much for the paracord loop to come apart at the end, and the hook to come off in the way he is showing it.
@adri92239
@adri92239 Год назад
Okay I might be dumb and misreading this but you say right before the snake knot? To me it looks like that's where exactly where he cuts it? Do you mean cutting it right after the first snake knot? Or are you saying to keep the strands in the bundle that you tie the snake knots around?
@markhollingsworth3590
@markhollingsworth3590 Год назад
@@adri92239 No, that's not a dumb question. At 7:10 he cuts the vertical strands before making the snake knot. If you look closely, the strands that he cuts are the ones securing the lobster clip to the rest of the monkey's fist. The paracord has to only loosten a little and the clip will break free. Don't cut those strands. Instead, cut the horizontal strands. This means that you'll make the snake knot with the same strands that are holding the clip on, and will result in the clip being impossible to come off. Hope that helps
@Asertix357
@Asertix357 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, no kidding. I love his projects, but sometimes I have a make modifications to the design for better results. I'm going to make one of these, leave all four strands integral, and alternate them on the snake knot so nothing can work itself loose.

I believe that they were very commonly used in Ireland, so of course they're illegal in the UK. And they are very effective. Just a tap behind the ear works well.

No idea how I got here but I'm fairly confident I would be more successful performing brain surgery blindfolded than I would be trying to replicate that.

Loved your video! I've been tying monkey fist knots since I was 14 (1987) All the ones I've ever tied have been ship bell lanyards or for heaving lines. Please forgive my ignorance, but, when you call it an impact tool I'm not 100% sure what that means. So impact tool would be...like something to break glass in an emergency? I swear I'm not a troll. 🤓

Depends on who you are. A lot of people would see it as a weapon, but I was kind of wondering how useful it might be as a glass breaker with the paracord softening the blow. Other than that, it's kind of a neat keychain idea if you're prone to losing them?

Hey so love your video so far, and this is probably the best tutorial I've seen on youtube for this specific version of the monkey's fist. HoW eEvR I have a slight problem. So I've done the monkey's fist exactly sd you've shown it, but I can't help but notice that there are gaps in my knot where the steel ball is showing. I'm using the exact same cord as your user, and I'm following the tutorial religiously, but there are gaps in mine and none in yours. Any ideas on how to fix or what's going on? I think it's that the cord I'm using is brand new, so it's probably not taking up as much space as yours is volume-wise, but that's my theory. Any suggestions?

Hey Dylan, if you're getting a gap and the core is showing do one extra pass on each side. So instead of 4 like I did in the video, do 5. That should cover the core up completely.

Your rope to ball ratio is off! If your rope is to small and your ball to big, as is often the case, try reducing the size of your ball or make your rope bigger.
