Hi guys, welcome to part 3 of the rear trailing arm upgrade on the R50 Mini Cooper from Kev's Shed.
In this video, I will be setting about getting the R56 alloy arms bolted up to my sons R50 Mini Cooper.
As I will explain in the video, the standard arms that are fitted to Gen 1 minis are made from pressed steel. Once the powdercoat is breached, the road grime and winter salt can attack the material and rust sets in. This was mentioned as an advisory at the last MOT so figured that I should do something about it before the next test.
In this episode, I am going to be fitting the complete trailing arm assembly to the chassis. This will include refitting of the complete braking system too.
Obviously, you will need a set of rear trailing arms from a 2nd Gen Mini, these can be found at the breakers listed below.

As I discussed in part 1 of this series, you will need a couple of things to make this upgrade work on the Gen 1 Mini, namely the shock absorber adaptors, linked below.

Additionally, you will need a pair of R56 Anti-Roll Bar drop links, linked below.

The rear wheel bearings that I purchased for this job can be found at the link below. Note that this listing is for one bearing so remember to add two to your basket!

Hey guys! I just want to add this as a pinned comment so that you don't have to go through the trial and error with any additional costs for sensors etc. It turns out that the R56 ABS sensors that came with the arms are not compatible with Gen 1 mini ABS modules. I even went to the expense of buying brand new R56 sensors only to find that they didn't work either. I had an ABS light up on the dash that would not go. What I did is fitted the original sensors that were fitted to the original R50 trailing arms, the hole that the sensors fit to on the alloy arms is of a wider diameter than the R50 sensors, however all I did was position the sensor roughly in the centre of the hole and tighten the screw securely. After deleting the error codes, this cured the problem! Hopefully this helps you out and prevents a whole lot of head scratching.

nice vid. after getting those spacers for the shock, i went and pulled some arms off a gen2 and noticed the shocks had that on the sleeve thats one piece going through shock. i cut both those cups off , ground flat side even & there you go! free adapters . also made a sleeve for ABS sensor. looking forward to the feel. pulled another set off in case i do another mini

Love your videos, so helpful. If I just want to swap out the front trailing arm bracket ( new ) with new bushes can I do that by removing the 3 mounting bolts and the bolt through the bush to the arm without removing anything else ? Thanks again for the brilliant videos.

Yes absolutely, the front of the arm will swing down enough once the 3 bolts are removed to allow bush removal. A bush puller will be needed however. 👍🏻

Did you need to change the Links that to go to the centre of the subframe?

Do you have a part number for new bushes for the trailing arms?

Very helpful video, did you use the original r50 abs sensor and bottom shock bolt just without the funny triangle washer on it

I originally bought a couple of Gen 2 ABS sensors only to find that they aren’t compatible so that’s worth keeping in mind. I then refitted the Gen 1 sensors but as the hole they fit in is larger on the alloy arms it’s simply a case of centering the sensor in the middle and tightening. It’s worked perfectly for the last 18 months. The bottom bolt is the same👍🏻

Hi Kev am doing the conversion you did, quick question, are the traling arm bushes the same or do you have to change them for the r56 ones ?

So the ABS sensor situation, do you use the R53 or the R56 sensor and wiring? Thank you.

That’s great , I’m toying with buying new brackets that already have the bushes in them , so would this just be a bolt off bolt on ? Or I’m also thinking of possibly doing the alloy upgrade as per your video on my R50 , where did you get the bushes from, I can’t find the right part online and have been told they’re dealer only which doesn’t sound right. Thanks again for the videos, I’ve done a few jobs already with your guidance 👍🏻

Hi The links are in the description but I think a couple of links have expired, only if you get a chance I’d love to know where to buy the bushes ( fallen foul of ordering wrong parts ) , cheers Alan
