Hi guys, welcome to another video from Kev's Shed.
In this video, I will be making a start on the upgrade to R56 alloy rear trailing arms on my sons R50 Mini Cooper.
As I will explain in the video, the standard arms that are fitted to Gen 1 minis are made from pressed steel. Once the powdercoat is breached, the road grime and winter salt can attack the material and rust sets in. This was mentioned as an advisory at the last MOT so figured that I should do something about it before the next test.
In this episode, I am going to prepare the replacement arms for fitment by replacing the wheel bearings and trailing arm front bush. It makes sense to do it now while the arms are off the car.
Obviously, you will need a set of rear trailing arms from a 2nd Gen Mini, these can be found at the breakers listed below.

As discussed, you will need a couple of things to make this upgrade work on the Gen 1 Mini, namely the shock absorber adaptors, linked below.

Additionally, you will need a pair of R56 Anti-Roll Bar drop links, linked below.

The rear wheel bearings that I purchased for this job can be found at the link below. Note that this listing is for one bearing so remember to add two to your basket!

Hey guys! I just want to add this as a pinned comment so that you don't have to go through the trial and error with any additional costs for sensors etc. It turns out that the R56 ABS sensors that came with the arms are not compatible with Gen 1 mini ABS modules. I even went to the expense of buying brand new R56 sensors only to find that they didn't work either. I had an ABS light up on the dash that would not go. What I did is fitted the original sensors that were fitted to the original R50 trailing arms, the hole that the sensors fit to on the alloy arms is of a wider diameter than the R50 sensors, however all I did was position the sensor roughly in the centre of the hole and tighten the screw securely. After deleting the error codes, this cured the problem! Hopefully this helps you out and prevents a whole lot of head scratching.

Did you re use the calliper retaining bolts or are they slightly short?

@@KevsShed haha yeah I saw that part after I sent the message! One other question did you use the shock bolt washer from the r56 or the r53/50 funny hex bolt? Great video!

@@KevsShed just part way though part 3 😂 Upgrading my rear ARB to a fatter adjustable one and weighing up whether to do the arm conversion at the same time and do some rust prevention/undercoating while it’s all off, or whether I’m getting ahead of myself and would need to take a week off work for it haha

I think the GP1 Mini uses a version of these cast also ones. I have the GP1 and they look similar.

Very well made video! I am about to do the same upgrade on my R53. I have all the parts, I'm just waiting for the weather to cool a bit here. Also debating whether or not to install polyurethane bushings in my new trailing arms even though the rubber bushings that are in them are good.

If I remember correctly the wheel bolt size is different from the Gen 1 to the Gen 2 (12mm versus 14mm), so you have to use Gen 1 hubs/bearings.

You are correct, I actually didn’t realise this! I just bought a set of larger bolts instead! 😁

Hi Kev, Are the R56 top mounts interchangeable with the R50 top mounts? (the mounts of which you changed the bushes). I can't get the steel bolts out of the aluminium and would like to re-use the top mounts if possible...
@KevsShed

Having a look at RealOEM, it lists the R50 top mount as fitting the following models: MINI R50 MINI R53 MINI R56 MINI R56 LCI MINI Clubman R55 MINI Clubman R55 LCI MINI Cabrio R52 The part number is Left - 33526754123 & Right - 33526754124 👍🏻

Question Are the wheel bearings on the r53 the same as the r56? I ask because I’ve studded my r53 and use lug nuts rather than bolts, so would need to stud the new r56 wheel bearings if the r53 won’t work. Great videos by the way..exactly what I was looking for! Bought my alloy arms 2 years ago but have been putting off the instal until I could see it done. Thanks
@KevsShed

So here’s the thing! I assumed that they were, and on the face of it they are. The only difference is that the R53 uses M12 wheel bolts and the R56 uses M14! I didn’t realise this until I had the whole thing reassembled and went to put the wheels back on! 🤦🏻‍♂️ luckily I had a set of M14 wheel bolts in the garage! Worth keeping this in mind 👍🏻

Perfect, I’ll just reuse mine then so I don’t have to buy another stud kit… They were newer when I installed the studs so they’ll be fine for a few year
