Ableton tutorial on how to make minimal drum & bass. I walk you through the fundamentals of tight neuro D&B breaks found in tracks by Skeptical, Alix Perez and many others. The secret is selecting the right hits, and using a minimalist approach to selecting and layering sounds. By the end of this video you should be able to making some very groovy, minimal D&B drums.

I really like the fact that this is one of the few tutorials that aims for creating a nice and clean beat instead of using 13 layers of kicks, 10 layers of snares, a chain of 30 compressors and overall complicating the whole process, making the sound difficult to understand (I am looking at you artfx...). Thanks!

Another great video. I like the attention paid to all the small details. You think like I do and try and get the most out of what you have, while obtaining perfection in the process. You took some pretty insignificant sounds, but after tweaking and proper layering, you really got everything to sit nice and 'tight' in the mix.
@STRANJAH

Another good way to add humanised rhythm to a groove is to change the velocity on the hats, but not just having one hat at 100% and the next 70% in sequence all the way through (which does work fine) you an randomize the velocity levels so that it gives a more natural swing to the beat. Loving the content as always Alan.

Just discovered your videos and already learned some good tips. Thanks! From now I think I'll put all my drum parts in separate racks. Btw, have you tried using Auto Pan to add shuffle to your hats? Set phase to zero, use a sawtooth envelope and bring up it's shape, then set the rate to add the shuffle. For example, if you've got 16th note hats, set rate to 8th note to duck alternating hats. Or set the rate using Hz and gently modulate using the Max 4 Live LFO device, to add further grooviness!
@STRANJAH

Rock on! That's quite a clever trick, I will try it out! Sounds like a good way to add variation and groove automatically

I especially enjoyed the procedure of conveying the message and the structure of the information. One question though, would you be able to articulate the difference you would get between using amplitude envelopes versus clip length and fades on one shot drum samples?
@STRANJAH
@STRANJAH 4 года назад
Essentially it is the same idea using amplitude envelopes. I believe with the basic Simpler in drumrack there are no envelopes, which is why I use the decay. If you convert to Sampler, then you can use the envelopes to achieve this. It really is the same idea!
