Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has told nurses "I don't think there's any point in going on strike anyway", as the Royal College of Nurses prepares to walk out for the first time in more than 100 years.
Ms Keegan said that above-inflation pay rises would "fuel inflation", as the RCN calls for a bump of inflation plus 5%.

From the 1980s onwards, managers from many different corporate sectors were brought in whereas before, nurse managers were all nurses, without exception. The whole concept of generic management was risible and nurses were and still are treated like garbage. Take it or leave it became the mantra and not surprisingly, recruitment and retention have become increasingly difficult. The Health service should cease and desist appointing diversity officers and management consultants as well as myriad non job occupations. People now have to express some sort of agenda, rather than concentrating on the business at hand. The NHS, subsequently is in freefall.

Maybe stop paying private health providers through the NHS and we'll really see where the money is going. Nurses may love their jobs but they are not going to stay when they are being impoverished by this government. Waiting times for GPs was 2 days before the Tories came into power 12 years ago, they are strip mining the NHS and diverting funds to private companies. When there are more foodbanks than McDonalds in the country there should be no greater sign of failure, but there is the great British innovation of warmbanks.

The government may 'understand' what nurses are going through, but they have ZERO intention of paying nurses, junior doctors, or anyone else proper wages. The cost of living has become higher than average wages, because wage increases have fallen way behind inflation. *The other side of the coin is that the top 100 companies in the UK - the FTSE 100 - have increased their profits since 2019 by a staggering 73%. This is not so much a cost of living crisis as a crisis in INEQUALITY.* It would be EASY for the government to levy much higher taxes on corporations (including windfall taxes on excess profits of energy wholesale companies) as well as imposing a tax on wealth. Billionaire shareholders of companies are getting MASSIVE increases in their dividends while low and even medium wage earners are having to rely on food banks, and are finding it impossible to pay their bills. But this government will NEVER do that because they receive immense wealth from their billionaire donors. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

@@DamiensTrainsandTravels Historically most people were malnourished in society. But there are cycles where people had more and then after a while of more abundance there was far less. The developed governments are all in debt (with a couple of exceptions), currency debasement has happened to cope with debt repayments. The people who have benefited are the ones with plenty of assets. The common worker has been kicked around and what he earns buys less and less. If the worker was responsible he would have found that his savings have been devalued significantly over time. When he retires he'll find that what state pension he has doesn't really keep up with inflation. (There are videos on youtube from the 70's showing people who have worked nearly all their adult lives in very physically demanding work for 4 decades or so with so little to show for it. Some even go back to work if they are healthy enough to make ends meet.) I belong to the asset rich class, buildings and arable land (for the cash flow and plenty of produce including fuel). I even saved some currency from 45 years ago, when I started working. The £1 note I've kept has lost over 90% of its real value. The buildings and arable land however, have appreciated far faster than inflation - not from my doing (after all I can not just create more currency out of thin air).

They need nurses but not happy to even listen to nurses. I am nervous about strike but the fact that there is shortage of nurses everywhere is risking the health of nurses but most of all the patients. The fact that nurses have to pay for the degree and that the starting pay is actually less than the amount they have to repay. And the average might be more that all over country but bear in mind nurses spend three years to finish the degree with placement with not paid hours.
