An extensive step-by-step tutorial to assist solo fishermen with remote boat launching using a Minn Kota Ulterra trolling motor. In this video you will find the critical thinking and considerations of ever-changing elements and situations that goes into using your Ulterra trolling motor to launch and retrieve your boat when going out on a solo trip. With the boat and trailer system, weather, traffic, boat ramp, personal experience and confidence being factored, you may find every situation requires anticipation of issues and pre-planning solutions to those possible problems to avoid costly mistakes. These steps will vary for all people and every condition thrown at you on a daily basis. The biggest factors to consider in my mind are wind direction, speed, boater traffic, and launching location.

Good luck with it. I would suggest getting the cheaper version remote that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. I think it is $180. My friend who has the remote that need to be charged on a daily basis hasn't figured out how to launch his boat with his newer model Ulterra he got in 2021. His motor is also connected to his Hummingbird while mine isn’t networked. My $180 remote that was the only unit that came with my motor when I got mine in 2017. I only have to replace the double A batteries once a season with mine, while he needs to charge his remote with a USB frequently while on the lake. We plan on experimenting more with launching his boat with his fancier Hummingbird networked version of Minn Kota motor this summer. He hasn't had a successful solo launch like I do with regularity.

Great video man. Yeah mine does same thing pretty much. Maybe I've just been worried when it said Motor not found and assumed that that meant that everyrhing kjust shut off and it wasn't spotlocked anymore. I lome your Crestliner . I was close to buying a new 1750 superhawk or a lund Impact Xs 1775 but after weighing out everything including the price I decided the Alumacraft Competitor FSX was the boat I was buying. Wanted bow cage nets bow cushions console cushions and a Yamaha and upgraded electronics and trailer and where I bought mine was only place that would let me do everyrhing. Thanks for sharing that was a good video on using the Ulterra.

That boat you decided to get is very much like my Crestliner, but probably 10 times more feature and option rich the way it looks. I like it a lot. Jay Siemens up there in Canada loves those boats, too! :) I didn't have a lot of options when I bought mine. I just got it used from a pro who needed bigger for bigger water. I feel blessed to have it nonetheless. It's a great boat for me.

It takes practice and your confidence will grow in time. Taking into consideration all the variables every time helps to eliminate potential for disaster, too. If you have a willing person who knows how to navigate a boat, it might help to practice with them in the boat a few times at the first few attempts. I just knew my boat isn’t likely going to float beyond the marina outlet I launched it in, so I could walk to whatever side the wind blew it toward if there was an issue.

Since I've gotten the hang of it, though, it's been years since I have launched without it unless I have a trustworthy driver to back the trailer to launch the boat with me in it. @rippinglipsadventures
@rippinglipsadventures Год назад
That is a good idea. I wish I had more clearance to put it down more than I do when it is on the trailer. I usually put in with other boats around and/or in the marina where it won't float off into no-man's land without being able to walk to retrieve it when the wind takes it. I've been fortunate enough to live 3 miles from the most prominent boat launch and it doesn't have any gravel to travel over, however, in the last few trips, I went to a new spot that had 4 miles of gravel one way. I really think gravel dust is the culprit in my first and last deploy failure. (I was able to make it work itself out by stowing it and redeploying it 3 times, then it worked flawlessly for the remainder of the day.)

From what I can tell, the MI and DI would cost $300 more and be nice if you’re moving forward. It might be nice to see fish from the bow as you are moving forward, but nothing a guy needs if you’re not tournament fishing. When I decide to upgrade to the Quest one day out of necessity, I’d probably save my money and not be concerned with getting the added SI option. My mind could change, but I haven’t had anything connected for 7 years. Not one time have I thought to myself, man, I wish I had a transducer on my trolling motor connected and operational. I don’t have my trolling motor transducer hooked up at all. I use the Mega+ SI/DI off the back of my boat and have a Helix at the helm and another Helix on an ice shuttle with Mega Live that I use in various spots of my boat, bow or stern.

Question, new to the ulterra features. Once the motor disconnects from the unit, does the motor shut off or does it stay in the spot lock mode till the controller gets back in range? I've never tried that feature because I'm afraid the boat will go crashing somewhere.
@rippinglipsadventures
@rippinglipsadventures Год назад
The spot lock feature stays in that mode and will not move for hours. The remote can go to sleep on me and it will remain in position if you are doing that sort of thing. The remote doesn’t have to be connected to it at all once spot lock has been engaged. To take it out of spot lock, powering the remote back on will connect automatically and you’ll be back in business with controlling. Same applies when you get out of range with that version of remote. It will simply reconnect when it is back in range again. I’ve never had any issues with mine.

Silicone on the belt and I have used white lithium on other friction points. I’ve seen a video out there that shows the by-the-book maintenance and there isn’t a lot to it. @josesantana561 I have confidence because I typically use the marina you see in this video. It wouldn’t float away on me if it didn’t work and there is always a $20 bill in my pocket to help convince someone to help me with their boat if needed. So far, no problems except the one time I used a launch at the end of a gravel road and had to restow and redeploy 3 times to jar the gravel loose from the unit as it floated away from the launch. It eventually worked and I had plenty of other boaters around in case.

Yep. I have actually have 15 outings in the proverbial “can” right now from last open water season. I was indisposed with paying video work for a few months and only heard from sources, the ice fishing wasn’t that great anyway. I would have liked to keep them up weekly, but like I said, “paying” video work takes precedence sometimes. I’m possibly starting with a long-form video more like minimal edit and closer to 40 minutes long just to start because it was almost like asmr is on TikTok for whoever, I don’t know. But it was relaxing and calming to watch with minimal music and cutting. It happened to be the same day I filmed this boat launching tutorial footage. I caught about 15 fish that day. It was a good day. Thanks for watching and commenting! We’ll see you around.

It is too intimidating for me every time I've gone down to the Tailrace to scout it out and see what in the heck a guy has to do to just simply navigate the waters and stay away from sandbars. Reading forums online doesn't help my fears any when I see guys with nice Ranger boats are getting hung up on the sandbars, too! The only thing I anticipated that I'd enjoy with the trolling motor in the river might be spot-locking a good hole. FWIW, my understanding that it is illegal to do this. Minn Kota pulled the ad which showed this because of that. It seems to be a cool thing to do, until the time it doesn't work. Nothing is 100% reliable, just ask Murphy. Aside from the 'wow" factor, it also seems that launching with a tether would be faster and certainly safer. Also, FWIW, I came across this while viewing videos on Ulterra repair, as mine failed to stow yesterday for as yet an undetermined reason. Otherwise, I'd be fishing!

Maybe in some jurisdictions or ordinances, they may consider it a boat not under control of an operator, but it clearly is and has been in perfect control for 5 straight years with zero malfunction or issue for me and others I know who have used it this way. You are correct, nothing can be 100% reliable and that is why it is noted that the ramp, conditions, traffic and surrounds determine whether or not I even use this method myself. If something goes wrong, i like to have at least one other boater nearby that I might be able to coax/pay into helping me out in the retrieval process and/or have a fairly closed off marina space with little traffic and very unlikely chance of the boat escaping into the open water. It can also be argued a tether would be faster... I wouldn't say safer, though, and surely not quicker for other boaters. I definitely don't keep any other boaters from using the dock or ramp while I have it set to the side and out of the way on spotlock. I'm just out to enjoy the technology we've been given, fish, and continue to make videos for fun. Thanks for being part of the system and watching and commenting. I sincerely appreciate you. One time, I did a launch alongside two boaters on either side of the dock and a line up of about 15 boats waiting to come down the ramp, too. The guy in his boat was waving his hands and yelling at me that my boat got away until he saw the trolling motor go down. The two boaters taking up the dock space when I put in were still sitting at the dock after I parked and walked to the end of the dock to jump into my boat. They said, "What is this?! A Minn Kota commercial?!" and then laughed. It was awesome. I was definitely a bit nervous with all the people lined up, but hey, it worked better than anyone could expect!

So far, most of my launches are in mostly contained areas, bays, or marinas and would merely drift to a shoreline within walking distance. I’ve only do it when all the conditions are good and steer clear of other traffic. My remote is connecting well beyond 30 feet every time. Typically, it reconnects at the top of the hill about 200 feet away. The reward to be like a Minn Kota Ulterra commercial is too great and hasn’t failed me once in 7 years. It sure beats jumping on a slippery trailer tongue and trying to shove off, tying up, and jumping out to park the pickup. I consider it less risky overall. Plus, it’s more convenient. Thanks for swinging into the comment section. Are you running a Quest series yet? I’m hoping that will be my next motor if I ever need to replace the old faithful Ulterra from 2017.
