Not sure if you are still reading this comments as it's and older video.. Just wanted to share that when, we turn our phones back on from airplane mode something happens in the background.. UPDATES.. yep.. all those automatic updates that would have happened during the time it was in airplane mode, just goes ahead and automatically updates themselves and racks up the data usage. I had a different carrier and learned quick, before leaving a wifi spot, to turn my phone service data back on so it will do the automatic update before I leave.. That didn't solve the problem completely tho. so I ended up going to every installed program and apps and manually 'turn off' the automatic update for each one. That way the phone will ask you before it updates any of them. you simply click 'no'.. and when you are back home in your home wifi turn your phone off then back on and it will ask for each update one by one.. click yes.. and let them update.. It will ask you again later if/when it has another update. if your not home just click no.. That way, no surprises.. .. Hopefully I explained that ok.. I think you at least get an idea of what I mean to say.. Thanks for the video.. :))

I have had Mint Mobile going on 2 years. The data usage seems to be only cellular usage because during a month Mint recognizes the use about 25 gig but there was one month where 35 gig was exceeded. I am NEVER in airplane mode but always in WIFI calling mode at the house so I believe it knows its using data from the WIFI system rather than the cellular data.

I have a second phone I use for gaming and I used to have Mint. I don't need phone and texting -- just data. Mint was fine. It just had stuff I don't need for that second phone. I ended up getting a data-only plan for $10 a month from Tello. Now, I am in Texas and when we had our big freeze blackout, everyone in our house lost access to the local AT&T cell towers. Luckily, the Tello plan includes free hotspot service. My second phone allowed my wife and I to stay in touch with the outside world, during that crazy few days.
@umbrellacorporationwuhanfa3731
I have had mint mobile the past 6 months and learned the hard way that the "unlimited" plan ISN'T fyukn unlimited!!!! After 35gb they throttle you to 3g!! Basically giving you mid 2000s speeds. It's only cost effective if you're also using wifi most of the time if not all of the time and not really using your cell phone that much for GPS. If you're 100% on your phone all the time w/no wifi access you'll piss through 35gb quick. One month I hit 46gb and those 12gb I went over the cap was especially slow and brutal. You can buy more data but they'll rape your pockets. Its like $15 for 5gb or $20 for 10gb. If you start buying data that really eats into your savings so buyer beware.

I have been using Mint Mobile for going on 3 years now. I have myself, my daughter, my mother and father, my goddaughter and her grandmother all on Mint Mobile. I have yet to have a problem that restarting the phone didn't fix and that has only come up 2 maybe 3 times across all 6 phones and 3 years. I can't say enough good things about it. The cost of these numbers compared to our old AT&T is less then half the price and I have yet to ever not have a signal. There have been a couple of places where signal was week, but I have never not had a signal. It is so cheep I upped my data and now use my phone as back up internet access for home. Our internet doesn't go out often, just often enough that it's nice to have an inexpensive insurance policy in the form of my mobile connection. If your consider trying Mint, I strongly suggest you give it a go.

I think the date issue is most likely phone related

Or maybe some softwares that phone installed and maybe those app did something while the phone is not under the WiFi. I have switched to mint more than a year. I just renewed for another year few months ago. I always use the internet for listening clubhouse and Google map through cellular data while 15~30 minutes driving. Two years ago the plan started with 3GB cellular data cap. Pretty soon they upgraded that basic plan to 4GB with the same price, $15. With 3GB I might ran out of the data at the end of a month. But now with 4GB I really don’t need to worry about it. And the WiFi calling function with Mint mobile, when the cellular signal is bad, is beautiful! Way better than the Google Fi I tried 3 years ago. I had iPhone 6s Plus 3 years ago. Google Fi WiFi calling function won’t work on that phone.

I'm going to guess that your mystery data consumption is related to apps - particularly Google. When I was activating my new phone, I noticed in the set up that Google had defaults that would allow them to constantly send and receive receive information from my new phone - if I allowed it; I would suggest switching all of these that you can to the "off" position. Besides these being entirely invasive and an disgusting invasion of privacy, I would guess that this is probably one of the most significant causes of your (invisibly) depleted data usage, despite your own, actual low usage... and I would further suggest you inspect the setup of any and all other apps you may have installed on your device.

After a few calls I find out there are a bunch of fees involved, which was odd from a company that bills itself as a "no extra fees" company. I switched to Mint and it's been great. I opted for the 4 Gb plan and have never even hit 1 Gb because, like foXnoMAD when I'm at home I use my wifi. Having Mint was one of the worst phone experiences I've ever had and an absolute nightmare with customer service! We had Verizon previously for as long as I can remember. Basically, I was going to have to start paying for everyone's phone, so I switched to Mint so that I could afford it, which was a terrible mistake. We bought 2 new phones from them as well because we needed new ones and mine was practically unusable the entire time I had it. After our year was up I tried getting a new phone, thinking that maybe the issue was that I went cheaper because I couldn't afford it. Unfortunately, they sent my phone to a completely different state which they blamed me for, but all of my information was correct on my end. Then instead of helping, I was the one that had to track down the phone and have it sent back to them because they said it was my issue and they happily were going to keep the money that was spent for the phone. Luckily, FedEx was amazing, and had to go to the place it was dropped off at several different times because the people that lived there accepted the phone and weren't going to return it, apparently. It eventually, again thanks to FedEx, was sent back and returned to Mint Mobile. They eventually sent me a "new" phone which arrived broken. Their return process is horrible it took me months on end just to receive a "return authorization code." to send it back to them. I had to literally call them EVERY SINGLE DAY just to get it. You always get a different staff member when you call, all they ever say is that they will escalate your issue to their return department, which they don't do. If you try to ask for a supervisor, they are always too busy to talk to you, and if you do get one, they always say they can't help you either. They blame YOU a lot for their own mistakes. They have a policy that you must start the return within 7 days of receiving the phone and throw it back in your face as an excuse to not give you the return. When I first received the defective phone, as I stated before, I called every single day to return it. Note: When you call, ALWAYS keep track of who you talked to, what time you called, exactly what they say, etc. KEEP ALL DOCUMENTATION! Because they WILL lie and say you didn't call, they don't have any notes in their system that you called even when staff members claim they are writing notes for the next person, etc. Even though I called every day, I had a staff member claim I was out of the return policy of 7 days because they didn't write notes that I called, or escalate it when they said they did, and whenever you do call, they say that it is out of their hands and they are waiting on the refund department who you can't call or talk to. The mysterious refund department is supposedly a different department for them but I had one staff member say it was literally just downstairs. Apparently, their call centers are located all over the place one lady said they were in the Philippines, another said in Taiwan, etc. They love to tell you that you will get a callback, which you never get. They also love to hang up on you, which other staff members tell you they "cannot do." But they absolutely can because they have been hung up on so many times by them, which I have recorded. Eventually, I was finally able to get the broken phone sent back to them with the authorization code that took me months to get, and they received the broken phone. Also, they make you pay to return it, which you will never get reimbursed for. Then we tried to get our refund, but instead, they decided to send me ANOTHER RANDOM PHONE THAT WE DIDN'T ASK FOR OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT. To have them again refuse the refund because I "had a phone from them..." Months later; I yet again called every single day...The only time they ever started to do something to help me was when I got the Better Business Bureau to assist me as well as other establishments. Because through this transaction, they weren't just ripping me off but other companies as well. This entire process of them calling me a liar, refusing to pay me back, hanging up on me, lying left and right, etc. took 6 months of my life away, having to call them every day as if I was a loan shark because they just wanted my money that badly. And reading other reviews on the company shows that, sadly, I'm not the only one that this has happened to. After this incident, we happily switched from them to T-Mobile. We are paying more than Mint but getting many benefits and WAY better customer service. With T-Mobile we are literally getting free streaming services, etc. I will never go with a company that doesn't have a physical location again. All of this could have been avoided if I could have just walked into a store to get the phone and then brought it back in if it was broken; to get it fixed. What an utter nightmare and half a year of my life wasted!

I currently use Verizon with an unlimited plan but have been considering switching to mint mobile for a cheaper price. I'd like to get unlimited with Mint but video streaming is then limited. I get it though, their video streaming is limited based on the structure of their service but knowing data usage is an issue for people I'm not sure I'll change yet. I can't get unlimited due to the streaming limitations but I also do not want to deal with my data artificially hitting max (may not happen to me but it's possible since it's an issue for people). I guess I'll hold off until that issue is fixed.

Jay, I am clueless 🤣 Can you explain to me, what the unlimited plan is? And why it means that video streaming is limited?
@midnightjay
@midnightjay 2 года назад
@@rebeccalavoy6655 No problem :) Sorry it's a long comment: Unlimited means you have unlimited celluar data usage. Basically, it's internet connection through celluar towers (varies based on the provider though, more towers in more locations are better for internet connection). Other data plans are limited to the giga byte amount it specifies like 5 gb plan, 10 gb plan, ect. Once you reach a set data limit per pay period (monthly allowance) if you continue to use celluar data your provider will charge you (penalty price varies with each service). With unlimited plans that penalty can't happen since there isn't an allowance of data but instead you use whatever you want but it's more expensive. In most cases too expensive which is where the interest in much cheaper services like mint mobile comes in. The video explains everything regarding that tbh Since providers like mint mobile borrows celluar data structures for their service from major providers if customers have the unlimited plan they will not let you stream videos because though unlimited they can't afford the overload of a bunch of people streaming data heavy content. So mint mobile's unlimited plan isn't that good imo since I stream videos a lot like youtube, hulu, etc. It's better for people who do not stream. Mint Mobile's other data plans would be nice since you can stream (limited to 480p though, if quality matters for some) but as explained in the video there's a chance customers may hit their data limit early for an unexplained reason and due to being cheaper they have less to offer with tech support/customer service so they do not have an answer for it yet (unless that has changed since this video). So this is why I put up with my current provider, I stream videos a lot so this service isn't for me unfortunately. At least, until they figure out why people cap their data limits early.

Switched home phone to Mint Mobile first using old T-Mobile phone. My regular mobile was with Total Wireless at the time but Verizon wasn't good in rural area so bought a new Metro unlocked phone and switched it, too. Like the cost and network but two things bother me... First is technical support is shady. Had forwarded my one # to the other & it wouldn't unforward. Tech had no clue & took forever to fix on back end. Then, they told me that my new phone DID NOT have WiFi calling. I argued that it was in settings & it was a MetroPCS phone so should work on TM network but they said their tech notes said no. Thank goodness for RU-vid to show you had to put in airplane mode first. Called back & told them to update their notes! Now, need to replace the older T-Mobile phone from 2018 but only way to get a deal on one is to sign up new with different email and transfer to new Sim card. The customer service person told me. They have zero upgrade discounts/options for established customers. You have to pay full price to replace if you start with your own phone. Could've saved $50 on new phone but too close to renewal to wait for new Sim, etc. Would cost half the savings to buy one month extension. 😔

So, I bought a new phone from Mint mobile's website, which I should receive in a couple of days. So, I haven't actually been able to use the service yet. So, my question is this. Since I'm an older lady, and I hardly ever go anywhere, I won't really need the data at all, except on extremely rare occasions. I will have it turned on just wifi while I'm home, and will have the data turned completely off. Not just airplane mode, because I will need my talk and text...but the data completely off. So, if I turn it off, will it stay off? Or does it turn back on by itself sometimes, without the user's knowledge?

If you turn off data from the settings, normally it will stay off (and default to wifi). Hope this helps!

I had Mint for two months and I always had buffering issues. Halfway through first month slowed to a crawl, the whole second half of the month was horrible. Second billing cycle started and everything was okay until I went beyond a certain amount of data, halfway through again, and buffering again! Paid extra $20 and only got 10 more gigs. I knew I’d be running into this same problem again and again and paying more money each month, so I switched back to T-Mobile ☹️. I really needed to save money but this did not work, and their customer service was not nearly as good, not happy. I thought unlimited meant unlimited ☹️

No service has complete unlimited but mints 35gb of fast data is the same as any other. I’ve had it for a year and a half and went over once but that was due to data being used by apps that didn’t need to when I wasn’t using the phone. RU-vid has lots of videos of what to turn off to keep from using data you don’t need to.

Same, basically. Even after we reached our data limit with TMobile, we could still stream with little buffering. With TMobile you did get preferential treatment. With mint, once the data is gone, you're barely getting by.
