I remember getting stuck on finding the final dungeon way back in the day. I was completely lost, so I wrote a letter to an address that was in the manual asking if there was any way I could get a hint. About a month later, I received a package from the studio/publisher. Within it was a *hand-typed* manual filled with every hint and tip imaginable. It gave actual HP/MP stats for every creature, strengths and weaknesses, locations of secret items, and full maps of every dungeon. I couldn't believe it. Bear in mind this was a time when PCs with printers wasn't a common thing. Still have a huge amount of respect for whoever typed all that out for me. I wish I still had it.

Similar to a lot of people commenting here, this was my first RPG. I wanted Phantasy Star, but it was sold out everywhere. I really liked this game and was convinced that most would not. I have never finished this game, but recall getting super close twice (the last time being on a jailbroken IPhone which crashed on me right before the last cave). Great review - a tip I had was to grind to get your main character to the top level before you get your second character as each successive character starts at a level below. I just recall how recall how fulfilling it was to expect a death blow from an enemy only to see that they “deftly miss.” I ended up finding Phantasy Star as a flea market years later - two awesome must plays on the Master System.

When a system doesn’t have too many RPGs, it’s good to know the few it does are solid! This is definitely a good challenge after beating Phantasy Star. So great to see you cover more of this classic! Both my wife and I played it separately in our youth, and we hold a lot of affection for this one. I feel like the obfuscated riddles (compounded by the shoddy translation) and the very grind-y nature of the game have prevented it from being included on more greatest SMS games lists, but I will forever treasure it as a personal favorite. If you think about it, how much more epic can you get than an adventure whose sole focus is to gain strength and gather items of legend in order to face the ultimate evil?
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 6 лет назад
I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed it! I wish I had played it in my youth. That's a nice thing to be able to share with your wife! You're absolutely right about the epic-ness of the story! I was honestly captivated by the game when I played through it at the end of last year, and despite having playing some of the "greats" like Phantasy Star since then, Miracle Warriors is still on my mind. I honestly find challenge in the riddles and translation that most people would draw a line at. It's sometimes more fun to try to imagine what they're getting at rather than having things handed to you. A good translation is something people really take for granted these days!

The PC88 version of this game has always captured my imagination since I first saw screenshots of it, but watching playthroughs of it it seems like the visual style was the best thing about it. Well, not that many RPGs of this vintage can be said to be compelling in the modern age, and maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Systems like the Talons and the ideas behind the blacksmith and weapon degradation, xp gain and counter attack combat are all pretty strong. Still, this was a fantastic overview of the game and despite all the grinding, it actually makes me want to try and maybe undertake the quest myself some day. Also I had to immediately send this video to my friend who is both a big Rush fan and loves older games like this. I hope he gets a good laugh out of it too!

Nice review! I just beat this game and I love it. (spoilers below!) First of all, I *really* like how the game's plot is "connected" to the Pandora's Box story. Don't know exactly why but I love the plot just because of this (and I also love when RPGs have female villains!). Second, I'm a huge fan of early computer RPGs (Ultima, Wizardry, Might and Magic, Ys and even the Hydlide games!) and since this game was ported from the PC-88 (and it actually seems to be much better than the original version) it was a great experience. I was able to beat the game without looking anything up online and I'm so happy about this. I only used the manual, the included map and the in-game clues. The only thing I couldn't figure out was where the "Magic Spheres" were sold but thankfully this was not required to finish the game. Since I had to walk around so much, I finished the game with over 400000 guilders and two of my characters at their maximum level. And, to be honest, I love grinding in RPGs anyway! Terarin was also really easy to beat (although I did use the "Magical Nuts" and "Staff of Earthquake") thanks to this! However, I do have one big complaint to make about the game. The clue from the "Merchant" who tells you that "Medi's town was once called Saria" is TOTALLY misleading! I've lost so many hours trying to follow Iason's path starting from Doris (since THIS is the town where you find Medi) but it turns out that "Saria" was actually Tegea (in the desert), not Doris! Why did the merchant say this then?! I was able to find the three keys only because I found the first key dungeon by myself since its location was kinda obvious (one tile of sand in the middle of the mountains...) and then I just kept pressing the "2" button in the desert until I found the other two and the final one. Only after doing this I was sure that this clue was, indeed, incorrect! It's a shame because the whole "follow Iason's footsteps" concept was great but it was ruined thanks to this... Overall, I'm really glad I finished this game! Took me about 22 hours to beat it (it could have taken less if not for the issue mentioned above...) and it's now one of my favorite Master System games! It may not be as polished as Phantasy Star or Ultima IV, but it still is just as good as these two in my opinion! Also... did anyone else notice that there's a portion of desert in the included map... which is actually NOT in the game itself? Instead, there's just water there in the game! I actually thought that there was a hidden town submerged there somehow (since one NPC says that "one town was lost") but it was not the case (it could have been a great idea though!)

I recently played through this, it took me quite a few months, I think the constant grinding and being stuck for ages kept me away a lot, but I got there! I was so confused by that 'curse black monk retainer' thing, I even went looking for black monks after seeing if anything was different with them (and yeah I eventually realised my blacksmith was gone too) now watching this video I understand what it meant! Also that scroll meant nothing to me, I think i tried to follow the instrcutions once and gave up, the only way I found all the keys and final boss was the tedious pressing button 1 on every single square of that desert till i found something, by this point I was soo determined to get it over with, i'd spent most of the end parts of the game stuck for weeks at a time! Still for its time it's quite good. great graphics and soundtrack, and I understand the tedious grinding and cryptic puzzles are nessesary as back then games were small so they had to be made artificially longer! nothing worse than shelling out $70 for a game you breeze through in a weekend.

Hopefully despite the tribulations, you enjoyed it overall. I think going in knowing what to expect makes it a much nicer experience but I appreciated the blind playthrough I had as well. I never thought I'd get out of the first few battles since it was so hard to live and also make money, but that was the biggest hurdle. Definitely a fun game, and as my first Master System game, it's near and dear to me. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

Insane difficulty in an rpg was a great feature back then. The carts couldn't hold game worlds that take 50-80 hours to explore like we have now, so grinding & difficulty spikes extended the play time greatly. In a world with no digital downloads & games just about always being full price, this was important since that game you got for your birthday might have to last you until Christmas.

@@thewindthatblows No kid wanted high concept art for their Master System for Christmas. And their parents didn't want to spend $40-$50 in 1980s money on a gift that would only last 2 days. The "games as art" debate didn't really get started until the PS1 era. Unless you were playing some PC war game or flight sim they were largely considered distractions for kids at the time.

I just got myself a copy of this game and I would love to play it, but I'm finding that the white square you use to move around the map doesn't respond very well at all. Sometimes I have to press a direction on the d-pad multiple times just to move ONE square! I've tried 2 different controllers and it's the same with both. Does anyone else have this problem? It's making what looks like a pretty decent game, virtually unplayable!
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 3 года назад
Are you sure that you're not moving but it just doesn't look like you are on the little grid up top? If you look where the characters are standing on the left, is the background there changing at all? It shouldn't be that hard to move so I'm wondering if there are just many squares of the same type and you're not seeing a change in the upper corner. That's my best guess. I hope you can get everything sorted.
