It's hell on earth, that's what it is. It's necessary isolation from other people, nervous system torture, and extreme stress in "normal" situations.

Yup, you basically can't live with anyone, or live near people. The only safe place to be would be a completely isolated room a few hundred feet under the surface that is made out of concrete so it wouldn't make expanding/heat popping sounds.

Whenever I am at the dinner table with my family and hold back any rage or tears to politly ask them to please stop chewing, breathing, clicking, tapping or even clicking their mouth while speaking, they either get mad at me or they tortur me by doing it again louder, then continuing to do whatever they're doing that triggered my miso. I dont eat with my family anymore.

My mom talks with her mouth full and I snap at her. She gets angry and tells me I'm bullying her, which I can't totally deny, but I also know that I'm not doing it on purpose and that she refuses to listen to me when I try to explain it to her. I haven't eaten with my family without headphones in my ears for 8 years.

Sneezing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My grandma won't just sneeze once...twice..three times.. or even four times. It goes on for like 20-30 minutes. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind. I've even gone outside of her house and stood in the driveway and when I could hear her through the wall I really thought I was going to lose my shit. I used to smoke cigarettes and when I hear that sound it makes me so tense I want to start smoking again to somehow feel better. But I don't...

I had a weird response to this video. I laughed at many of the parts where he was explaining what it was like. I suppose it was just pure joy that finally someone understands what I go through. People who don’t know about misophonia typically tell you to just deal with it, quit being dramatic, calm down crazy. It is never acceptable to discriminate against someone for something the cannot choose. I can’t choose not to react, as a matter of fact, holding in my reaction adds a multiplier to the reaction that increases with the continuance of the noise. Excellent video.

I've had the same reaction recently to posts on miso. I laughed uproariously! Couldn't stop. Someone was saying that just thinking about a certain sound made them nauseous. Then they said getting nauseous right now. That set me off for 3 or 4 minutes of over-the-top laughing, It must be some kind wierd way of getting relief.

I had the same reaction when my sister described the video telling me the story how she found out of it. And just ab amazing sense of relief came over me for just hearing that there's a reason for these extreme rages iv gone thru my entire life. It's not just the type of noises he's referring to tho there's definitely many more noises that does it to me like I enjoy all sorts of music but some stuff it litterally makes me feel a total rage build up like I'm ready to slaughter anything that moves. But the thing is that's not me at all and I don't do anything to harm anyone but something triggers me to feel this nasty just straight raging hatred for anything to do with whatever the trigger is at that moment

I just wish people could understand how unbelievably debilitating this problem is. I have been dealing with extreme levels of this for 20+ years now. "Don't let it get to you." is what I hear all the time. It's infuriating. I have had to move many times due to the noise of neighbors in joining apartments. Try explaining the reason why you can't live there anymore to your landlord who's human trash. Or why there's fist shaped holes in the drywall. I can't focus in college classes, I can hardly hold a job. So many sounds cause physical pain to me, the adrenaline starts pumping and it makes me want to run or become violent. Thank God I have never hurt anyone but myself, even though the thoughts in my head are awful. I even dropped out of the military because of it. Try explaining to them why I couldn't do my duties... this condition has wrecked my life. I watched all of my friends grow up, move on, advance, and leave me behind because of this problem. My RU-vid name is what it is for a reason. Anyway, Thanks for this, Tom. It's good to know, finally, what my problem is after all these years. And good to know I'm not alone, that others out there understand how horrid this is.

Speaking as a person whose heart starts pounding due to the eating noises at the dinner table, I know that the way she puts it implies that it's easy to do... that's a misunderstanding that needs remedying. The correct response to people like your grandma is "I'll take all the help I can get with that".

a brilliant breakdown of what misophonia is! I have suffered for 30years so, since I was about 9, and only found out 1yr ago that I wasn't alone in my struggle. i have tried to explain to people close to me what i am going through each day and the huge amount of anxiety it causes but often people would bring it down to their level ie - my worst trigger is eating and mouth movement..if i mention chewing to be a trigger they would say things like 'thats normal- i dont like noisy eaters' - but far from understanding the extreme emotional and physical reaction my body was going through. i can show them this video and i know it will make more sense to them - thankyou

I have so many triggers, and i agree. With severe anxiety, it makes misophonia so much worse. Its not irritating, it causes a crazy reaction to my body. I start to jerk, bite down, shake, and get the chills. It takes me like 30 minutes, or more to overcome what i just went through. I absolutely knew something was odd with it, but didnt realize it was a real diagnosed thing. Thankful for this.

Thank you for this video it's VERY informative and I might show my family as they don't understand what I'm going through at all. People tell us with misophonia that it's "fake" or we can just "get over it" but that's exactly like telling someone suffering with OCD to just "get over it". It's very sad and heartbreaking that people who don't suffer from this actually have a really hard time understanding what it's like.

ChildofGod wow, sorry you had to live with it so long, it must be such a relief to be able to know it IS something now. i've only had it for 3-4 years from what i can remember, im not sure if i've always had it since the earliest memories of it was when i was 12 and it's only gotten worse, i can't imagine how i'd cope without the internet and with support from others who have it online. i have the same feeling, sometimes it drives me so crazy ill pinch myself i'm so angry, if i'm stuck in a situation where i cant get up and leave. it really is an awful thing to deal with, and it's only worse because so many people cant udnerstand. my worst sounds are heavy breathing, chewing and especially crunching. i have weird sounds too, like the sound of someone pacing or walking heavily sometimes (certain people doing it make the sounds a lot worse), and the sound of certain people typing on a keyboard, a lot of repitive sounds actually affect me, same with reptitive movements like someone shaking their foot or spinning on an office chair. it's weird, but i'm so glad there's these videos to help me see how many others deal with it too. :)

Stella Mightytree funny thing is, last month i was actually diagnosed with OCD and last year when i wrote this i had no idea! sounds like eating also make me sooo uncomfortable, and makes me VERY angry and feel violent. my mom is the same!! she is so annoying and i FEEL like she does it on purpose, but thats part of my OCD.. shes not ACTUALLY doing it on purpose, thats just how i percieve it. i feel like shes a threat, when really she isnt doing anything on purpose. though my mom is informed about misophonia she doesnt care much, though she trys to respect it, she thinks i can just "get over it" which is annoying because just like ocd, you cant just "get over it" lol!!!! it took me a lot to tell my mom about this disorder..... but i did it and i feel better, but at the same time since she knows i feel like she does things on purpose... because she KNOWS and thinksi can "get over it" or "deal with it" but all in all, telling her was good, because now she knows its real atleast, i hope she does lol! dont worry though, it gets easier.... kind of... i just usually eat with my headphones in, or wait and eat after everyone!! i kind of work with my disorder - headphones and music and white noise and ASMR are my best friend.

It's important here to note that not everyone including myself, will act upon thoughts they have when trigger noises are present. Also, not all visual triggers are related to audio triggers. As a coping mechanism, I found that imitating people in reaction to what they were doing was more satisfying than saying nothing. I have lost my temper, shouted, sweared, cried, ran out of rooms, left restaurants so there isn't just ONE way to react and I say react cause as you say, it really isn't a choice I can not physically help it.

I am 52, I suffer of this condition since age 10 and I have an explanation for my case. I had a deficient relation with my mother (she gave me no affection, although she loved me ....in her style). And when she was heating her meal, she was very focused on her food, in a manner that made me feel that the eats were more important to her than me, her son. And hence, inside me, all her chewing and slurping sounds became converted into an immense hate and rage. Moreover, she was an apple eater, the apple biting sounds is horrendous. My job nowadays in an office together with 4 persons which chew, drink, slurp, eat apples. Fortunately the toilet and a scanner outside on a hall is a good pretext to live the office. But I would take easier a 7M earthquake than this apple eating.

Misophonia is not easy by itself, let alone trauma, I truly hope that you have a happy life where you don’t have to be around these noises 🥺🥺🥺 I suffer from misophonia, specifically wishpering, and it sends me into a panic attack to the point I just start tearing up and beg the person to stop in my head. It’s really unpleasant, and suffering in silence really doesn’t help 🥺 but I truly hope you’re doing much better now buddy.

I would give anything ~anything~ for my family to see this video and really try to understand. They've been convinced that I'm just a controlling bitch since I was a kid because of this disorder. Don't you think I would have stopped trying to control everything after 30+ years? Do you really think anyone in the UNIVERSE would choose to be this bothered by tiny little sounds and actions all of the time? I am miserable and exhausted and about at my wit's end. I have all sorts of triggers that I’ve recently been taking steps to identify. I guess while we’re on the family dinner topic, here are some of mine: - scooting chairs - blowing on food to cool it off - when people punch the fork through their food and it hits the plate real hard - when people put down their forks and spoons on the table - biting down on a spoon and scraping their teeth while pulling it back out My biggest question about this whole thing is why is it the absolute worst with family members? I love them more than anyone in the world Unfortunately, I’ve discovered that alcohol is a good treatment to numb the senses....

People whispering is the worse for me, keyboard tapping, women filing their nails, chewing, swallowing, drinking, blowing bubbles with gum.. I fill with rage. It's hard to explain the feeling, my body hurts inside, I can't go to the cinema, I want to kill people. I want to pick my chair up and throw it at them, but when my kids eat it doesn't trigger it. I cover my ears, my legs start shaking, my insides shake. It's unbearable. Nobody that has never felt it can know what it's like. It physically destroys you inside, your body is full of rage and you need to escape from the hell! Sounds stupid, I know

I've found that my misophonia triggers have developed into certain visual triggers too. When people shake or swing their legs when they're sitting in a chair especially. Repetitive movements. Which is extremely odd because in high school I played on the drumline which is essentially repetitive sounds and movements. But maybe because I was creating music I didn't have problem with it. I knew I had misophonia since the age of 12, I'm 23 now.

This is really helping. I always thought that I have a weird situation since I was a kid. I can't stand the sound of opening and banging doors, it grows to become anxiety to any rhythmic sound and visuals that related to it that I can't control. I can't stay in a restaurant or office where the doors become a trigger. I can't concentrate in class where the door can't close properly and keep swinging, and how people using that door with such at ease. And many things such as door between carriages on trains. I always thought "this is getting worse and I need help to at least identify what is happening with me" and I found this video. I realized the initial sound was actually related with a figure in my family which consistently causing the sound. And his existence for me related with fear when I was a kid. It is all i know now, but this is helping so much for me to understand my anxiety. I keep checking everydoor around me, I prop any table leg which making trigger sounds, but most of the time, I bring headset everywhere, when there is a condition which I really can't control (example, on the train) I just listen to the loudest music and read a book so that I can't hear and see the triggers. Thank you for this video. I really appreciate the knowledge you have shared

Mouth noises. Chewing. Wet kissing. That sound when people like suck their spoon, sipping from a glass or bottle. Generally wet sloppy sounds. It’s fcking infuriating. My head gets light/floaty and my face gets hot. My automatic response is to internally scream while holding back the burning need to punch the source of the sound in the throat. I wear earbuds like earplugs to get through grocery shopping. It’s embarrassing to say that, as a 29 year old adult, I’ve fled from family parties in tears. Holding back the rage only forces it out in the form of sobbing and guilt.

Thank you for this video, I have never heard of Misophonia. It's caused all kinds of problems for me. When I'm in the supermarket, I feel tense if there are small children in there as they can unexpectedly SCREAM or shout or cry and if i have a basket in my hands I can't stick my fingers in my ears and if i do the parents often give you dirty and threatening looks like I'm suppost to enjoy it. When i look at the other shoppers in supermarket if a child is screaming they dont seem so bothered, this is how i know its obviously not affecting them as much as me.Teenage girls who get excited with shreaky voices is also horrible, I've often caused offence by wincing or putting my fingers in my ears but it literally feels like a stab in the brain to me my heart races and get a headache, it's also same with building work, traffic police and ambulance noises trigger lots of headaches and adrenalin, I am always pressing mute on my T.V as certain people's voices just irritate the he'll out of me. I hardly ever go to the theatre or cinema as I can hear people's noises or feet shuffling and it's just too loud, new cinema surround sound is just really bad for me .at train stations I find it unbearable the announcers on the tannoy. When I'm in resteraunts I often can clearly hear a conversation across the room more clearly than the person I'm with who's in front of me and find it very distracting. When I visit other people's houses I always find the tv is way too loud for me and sometimes avoid going because they get irritated by me asking to lower the volume. I often have earplugs in as it takes the edge off the noise but they can feel irritating if you have them in all day. The only sounds that calm me is cats purring, walking in snow, the wind in the trees and streams or rain and thunder also I like 1960s lounge music. Sorry for long rant (if you've bothered to read it) BUT I feel like I've suffered with this alone and have often been made to feel like I'm just a fussy awquard person. Not to mention that I have moved several times because of neighbour noises. I'm not a fan of the summer as it's the noisiest season , I have considered moving from UK to a country with less people and traffic in it. Anyone who suffers like me with this feel free to moan to me as I totally understand. It can be very depressing 50% is due to misunderstandings or people simply having no sympathy for the daily ear rape endured.

Misophonia is HELL. I would do almost anything not to have to deal with it every single day. And trying to explain my physical/emotional reactions to someone who doesn't suffer from it is pointless. They don't understand why I get so upset over something they see as trivial. I scare myself sometimes because of the hate & rage I feel. Whenever possible I leave, get the heck out of there, but sometimes that's impossible to do. I've lost jobs before because I got triggered to the point where I ended up going off on a person-yelling, cussing, threatening them. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I suspect that me and my sister have misophonia. She gets really annoyed off of snoring sounds. We both get extremely frustrated when we hear chewing and swallowing. I hate the sound of cutlery being scraped on a plate, cutlery and plates being sorted, also when people drag their slippers around on the floor. keys rattling breathing through the nose But that is about it, clicking sounds do not annoy me. All of the things you said fit in to how I feel, I get very angry, but I suffer in silence mostly, because I don't want to be such a pain to others, a lot of fights have been started in the past because of it. But if it's somewhat appropriate, I will leave the situation. I get especially angry when my family members are making the sounds. So, what do you think? Do I have misophonia?

With my Grandma's sounds it can make me quite distressed but I often blast my earphones or leave the room. As she is staying in the same room as me, I may also put my fingers in my ears because I don't have ear plugs that are strong enough to fully block out noises. I can't bring myself to say anything to her because I know it's just a habit she has (which may actually be a vocal tic) so I just try not to make my reactions obvious. When I complain to my mum about her noises she thinks I'm a diva but I'd rather she think that than think that I'm trying to diagnose myself with something. She already thinks I overeact all the time. Plate scraping is another thing but that doesn't always last too long so it's more manageable.

For me, it's the sound of crunching food (apples, chips, granola, etc.), chewing with an open mouth, someone constantly reaching into a bag of chips and rustling the bag, opening a wrapper slowly, ice clinging against a glass constantly, the sound of a spoon clinging against a mug or glass when someone is stirring his or her coffee or tea longer than usual, someone shaking a shaker cup to mix a protein shake or pre-workout drink longer than needed, scraping the bottom of a bowl or cup of yogurt to get every last bit onto a spoon...

Great video. For someone who has Misophonia it took me a long time to actually nail down what really was wrong. My trigger sounds are eating and the sound of jandals/sandals clapping on the feet (weird I know) and I naturally thought I just hated those sounds. I could not look at my partner or anyone at the dining table when eating dinner, I would angle my body away from the sound, avoiding those visual and sound triggers of the person eating. And yes the sounds were generally worse if I knew the person well. The sounds were very minimal in terms of effects it had if it was a stranger or someone I barely knew eating around me. A specific visual trigger for example was that if I was sitting on the couch at home and someone walks up to the pantry to get something to eat, it would immediately attract my attention and I would look at the person badly or angrily. Another thing I noticed was that the pain that you get from these triggers was a lot worse if I was concentrating on something i.e. working on my laptop or watching a movie. I'm a relatively quiet/reserved person that rarely goes out and socialise and I feel this may have had a big effect on my entire character/personality/habits etc. The internal pain is very stressful and triggers involuntary emotions of anger, rage, disgust etc. I'm a much happier person now that I know what I'm dealing with. Luckily I have a supportive partner who handles it well. I just have to cope with it for now, keeping the radio on while eating is a huge help as it blocks the sound of anyone eating which is my main and primary trigger. Fixing the primary trigger halves the problem. :) Thanks Blake - New Zealand

This is the best video I have seen on the topic because the trigger sounds are not demonstrated, as they are in the other videos I have seen. I have this for sure and have been dealing with it for a very long time. So many things that I wish my family understood were presented in this video. I relate so much to all of this, that many times I knew exactly what you were going to say next. One thing I would like to know, because my dad always says I don't have this because I haven't been to a doctor, is if it still okay to say I have it without being "formally" diagnosed. I would also like to know how common misophonia is. Often it feels like I'm in this alone. How many other people are suffering in silence? And not people that like to say they have this because they are "sensitive" to one sound an have no reaction at all-they just simply don't like it. I recently won a bunch of awards in a state writing competition for a fictional story I wrote about a girl living with misophonia. Once the story started circulating, people began telling me that they definitely have it too. But many of them described it an it was nothing near the pain I feel when I hear a trigger sound. I don't know if they are experiencing it in a less painful way or if they're being dramatic. I just don't know, but it seems like the latter. Anyway, I really appreciate these videos being put out there. The more awareness there is, the more people start to realize I'm not crazy or obnoxious or dramatic, things people think of me on a daily basis. I'm in favor of an official misophonia awareness day, if anyone is with me. Thank you for working towards helping people like me.

The worst part about Misophonia is that the trigger sounds only increase in number. I'm 25, but remember about 12 years ago recognizing my first trigger sound--my mom chewing gum and popping bubbles. I knew it wasn't normal to feel internal rage and a desperate desire to avoid the noise/react in unproportional anger or by mimicking the noise in a cartoonish manner to help ease my mind. Of course, only the stopping of the trigger sound works to calm me down. The most recent trigger I've noticed that I have is when someone bites their nails and it makes a little clicking noise. I wish there were studies to show WHY we have these reactions to certain sounds. I thought I was psychotic when I was younger for this but have learned over the years I'm not alone, and thank God for that!

For me it’s from being emotionally abused and humiliated as a child I was to be seen and not heard

Holy shit thanks to Shane Dawson I now know I have another problem 🤦‍♀️ I get so angry when people breathe loudly. Like I have yelled at people to just stop breathing because it drives me crazy.

Wow this is very reassuring and comforting to hear... now I know that it will only get worse with time... And in 10 years, with the speed this is escalating, I will be living inside a tiny box with ear plugs and blind folds...

I did not know until recently that I had Misophonia. I have struggled with it since I was a young child and now in my 40's. I can't go to restaurants as my trigger is cutlery on plates. I cope by avoiding any situation that involves food, other than where you eat with your hands. My response is a very heavy dull pain in my head and feeling that they are all eating like animals, alongside pure anger and rage. Then i get the fight or flight feeling. I find that the more emotionally close I am to a person the more it affects me. It cost me a 15 year marriage. For years I have been told "It's all in your Head. Stop being stupid."

This is the one thing that's destroying my life right now. I hate it so damn much and I'd give anything to not get hardcore anxiety over specific noises!

My life has been absolute hell because i am both bipolar and have Misophonia. And you can't tell anyone they irritate you because they think it is funny . I lived with abuse over something i just couldn't stop. What could be the real reason behind this condition? It kind of helps to know the dolphins and whales beach themselves and die because of noise from military experiments. A strange correlation?

I first noticed this when this kid in my class at school had an autonomic issue where he kept clearing this throat at this lower frequency that I feel like nobody else could hear - but it happened like 6 times a minute, for 80 minutes a class, two classes a day, and it was a feeling of pure rage flooding through my body every time (and I couldn't leave). The guy wasn't a bad person, but that noise, wanted to just claw his throat out for it to stop. I thought I forgot it until my last housemate did it, and those same thoughts and responses instantly flooded back.

For being 8 years old this is a very good explanation of what’s been happening to me for the past 40 years. I would probably want to show this video to my family to help explain the problem though I would clarify that I absolutely never feel violent towards my family members. If I ever did feel violent towards a trigger sound it’s been wrung out of me a lot time ago. I’m like the lady that runs to her room and cries.

It is so helpful to have a vocabulary for explaining this to people. At 58, I have tried various ways of explaining it to people and always start with an acknowledgment that it's my own unique weird problem and relied on them being really, really kind, which is rare. It's a game-changer to have some back-up and clarity.

Omgoodness! This is me in a nutshell. My daughter, bless her, started a new job and her new trainer told her last week, to please be patient, she had a condition... And went on to describe Misophonia. My daughter who is 31 had watched me suffer from this her whole life and was happy to be able to text me the name of what I've been suffering from. Seriously, if people don't think people with Misophonia (noise issues or annoyances) are suffering, I'm here to let you know otherwise. Mine began as a child with my mom's gum snapping. It wasn't a pop every now and again, it was a snap every time her teeth connected. I felt like I was going to pee my 5 year old pants because I couldn't get out of the car and she refused to stop. She thought I was being picky and trying to control her at that age, so she snapped away. I felt as if I was going insane. Even thinking about it now, hurts. I can't describe the feeling. Anxious maybe. That was the beginning and it progressed over time. Chewing. Chewing with open mouth. I hardly ever eat with my family. I'll eat separately in my room. Cracking knuckles is a big no no. I like that there's a name for my disorder. I'm also hyper sensitive to noise as well, but I forget the name of that one. I can't stand loud TV's. For example, my husband I always thought he needed a hearing test, now I'm not so sure. It's probably only me. When he's watching TV it sounds like we're in a movie screening, it's so loud in my ears. But not to everyone else. When I go in my room to watch TV, if I can still hear the living room TV I get that same visceral reaction I get from Misophonia. I have my ceiling fan going, my tower fan going and my TV going. Sometimes I have earplugs in too. They hurt, so I can't always wear them. I can't stand the people in cars who blare their radios into oblivion. I'm too sensitive to live with other people. I'm grateful to know there's a name for it now. I'm 56 tomorrow, it's about time, right?

So I have had misophonia for about 8 years now (since I was a child) It started out really bad, like to the point of feeling that certain sounds would be echoing inside my head, but as the years have gone by, it's only a mild irritation for me. I don't know if this would work for anyone but what's helped for me was making those sounds myself and slowly getting used to it. And also trying to put focus on other sounds such as music
