Misophonia is a disorder that we are still researching and figuring out all of the connections at play when sound is causing distress to patients. We know that there is an auditory connection.
The auditory system is flagging sounds like breathing, coughing, keyboard clicking, very typical everyday sounds.
The body flags those as being problematic, and we also see the activation of emotional parts of our brain which changes our behavior.
Patients with Misophonia will often respond to sounds with intense feelings of anger, frustration, and panic. There's a sense of wanting to leave the room. This really impacts patients in terms of finding and maintaining jobs, staying in the classroom, and being able to focus.
We want to make sure that we're treating the whole system when we treat misophonia. There can be co-occurrences of other disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourette's syndrome, attention deficit disorders, and anxiety disorders.
And it's important to understand that Misophonia is a unique condition, and it can co-occur with these other conditions.
