beautiful finish. I have recently been on a car-building kick, after a good 25 years out of the hobby. I'd forgotten what a pleasure it is. A car is one of the biggest modeler's challenges. It's ALL about that beautiful glass paint finish, where you can see yourself in the clear coat. I have had my challenges in finding a good gloss coat, with the Villejo gloss varnish being very underwhelming to me, almost satin-like and not taking well to polishing. I even tried automotive clear-coat, but it crazes any acrylic. I will try this if I can't find any alternative.
It works well. Recently I have been using SMS clear coat, but thats an Australian brand, so might be hard to get ahold of for you: www.bnamodelworld.com/the-scale-modellers-supply-sms-pl58-acrylic-lacquer-paint-premium-super-clear-high-gloss-30ml?zenid=718b86099a884891683ca150bf17e926 Another that might be easier for you to find is Mr Color Gloss Clear GX. www.bnamodelworld.com/gsi-creos-gsi-gx100-mr-color-lacquer-gloss-super-clear-iii-18ml You'll have to thin down the latter, so get some of their self leveling thinner for a great result. Oh and welcome back to the hobby! Dan
Did you adhere to their recommended pressure of 10-12 PSI, or did you use a different pressure. I'm not a car guy, however I love your choice of car kit. Thanks!
G'day JP C, I'm not a car guy either, buts its the Batmobile, what choice do I have! To be honest I can't recall the air pressure I used, but I think it would have been closer to 18 PSI. Since I shot this video I've sanded the model back and reshot it with lacquers, using Mr Color Gloss Black and SMS Super Clear over that and I am over the moon with the finish. That said the Mission Models clear is very good for an acrylic. Actually the whole Mission Models range is excellent. Dan
My basecoats for my tanks are gonna be water based acrylics so I'm trying to find an acrylic varnish to use before I put on enamel based weathering products and pigments. Any suggestions? It's a wild west out there and for every product I find someone recommending I also find 5 people saying they had nothing but problems with it. It's really overwhelming...
Hi uglimus and yes I get what you mean about everyone having a different opinion on every product. In the acrylic varnish world the three I have used are Alclad Aqua Gloss, Vallejo Polyurethane Gloss and Mission Models Gloss and Satin varnishes. Oh and i also have AK-Interactives Ultra Mat Varnish, but not experience with their equivalent gloss and satin. Bottom line is all four have worked fine for me. The Alclad has the advantage that you don't thin it, but it can play up if you accidently shake the bottle and get air bubbles in the spray gun cup. Vallejo works great if you thin down 50-60% with their acrylic thinner and put on a dusting and then a light wet coat. AK-Interactive is a bit hit and miss. Mission Models works with their propertery thinner (please use theirs for best results) and its simple to mix as they have clear instructions on their web site on how to mix and use it. Its also very durable and forms a nice hard surface, which can be polished quite nicely for car kits too. Its sounds like more work, but I actually think the Mission Models is the best all round of the four I have used. Down side is you have to use their thinner for activating it and its relatively expensive compared to the other two, but you would stilll get quite a few 1:35 tanks kits out of one bottle for example. I tend to use the Vallejo simply because its cheaper as a base for tanks etc, but I think the Mission Models is the clear winner for me on acrylic clear coats. www.missionmodelsus.com/collections/clear-coats www.missionmodelsus.com/pages/tips-and-tricks-faq Hope that helps, Dan
