Mistaken Modernity by Dipankar Gupta

Arguably, The Reading Quest

From Hindu notions of dirt, South Asia's preference for women leaders to patronage in democratic politics, Dipankar Gupta resolves many of the paradoxes of contemporary India in this book. In the process, he issues a damning indictment of the"westoxicated" elitist Indian middle class, and shows how unmodern the people of this class are in the very areas in which they are considered to be modern. Modernity, argues the author, is not about technology and consumption, as is mistakenly believed in India, but has to do with attitudes, especially those that come into play in our social relations. It is here that the Indian middle class is found severely wanting. Family connections, privileges of caste and status, as well as the willingness to break every law in the book characterize our social relations very deeply. The past clings tenaciously to our present - traditional India thrives in contemporary locales. A brilliant and chilling treatise on the hypocrisy and vanity of the Indian middle class, and its pathetic attempts to cloak its traditional ways in superficial modernity.

Thank you so much for the book recommendation. I read A room of one's own and men's search for meaning after listening to you. I was ignorant of the literary world earlier. I take note of every book and author that you mention.

The traditional notions of carrying the patriarchy forward in case a male heir is not present, or is assassinated... along discourse is present in the book.

Great Video ! Mistaken Modernity by Dipankar Gupta is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding India from a sociological perspective. The insightful analysis challenges the superficial markers of modernity in India, revealing how deep-rooted traditional values often undermine true progress. This book offers an exploration of the complexities of Indian society, highly recommended for those seeking a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the country's social fabric.

"deep-rooted traditional values often undermine true progress" Well then how do you explain the case of West Bengal and Kerala, the two most economically and morally bankrupt states with great infestation of religious fundamentalist terror, even after discarding Hindu nationalism and adopting Western secular humanism? The Hindutva state of Gujrat is far more "developed" than these two in your definition of development.

Hey will you also review the book "India, that is Bharat" by J Sai Deepak which is also related to this theme of modernity?

That is Hesse's magnum opus. In order to read the magnum opus of a writer, Glass bead in case of Hesse or Brothers Karamazov in case of Dostoyevsky, you need to prepare yourself first by reading the precursor to their works, the themes that they have developed over time and all that. For Glass bead you need to be aware of the whole Hesse-Jungian tradition and the themes of self-exploration that both of these writers expounded. I am posting some links below that may help - Lastly, you can first read these books in this order to finally get to know the Glass Bead- Siddhartha Narcissus and Goldmund Peter Camazind Demian Steppenwolf The Glass Bead
