Mistakes “Pro’s” Make When Lifting Their Truck

Or, if it’s only a bit of clearance that you need, air down your tires a bunch to get it out. Had to do that with a buddies truck.

@Bob Hob thanks man, ive tried but no one is doing a modest lift on a 17 yukon denali. I want a masculine lift but nothing crazy, so i been looking at the sierras as a base. You think going 24 in 12 wide (maybe) 33s is safe enough? Well as close to regular maintenance as possible? I think 4 to 6 in is enough to do this

The choice of wheel offset causes a lot more maintenance than the lift itself. In order to run larger/wider tires people tend to choose wheels with a lot less negative offset than the factory wheels. This moves the center load on the wheel further away from the center of the wheel bearing which gives the load a longer lever to apply force on the bearing and ball joints. A factory wheel for a Ram HD is 8 inches wide and has 6 inches of backspacing. This puts the center load (4 inches from the wheel lips very close to inline with the center of the the factory unit bearing and not too far from the ball joints. Load is split roughly 50-50. A pretty tame 10 inch wide 4 inch backspacing wheel will move the center load (5 inches from wheel lips in center of barrel) 2 inches to the outside of bearing/ball joint center line. This puts 60% of the load on the outside of the bearing. So if you run 14" wide -90 offset (4 inch backspacing) your center load is moving out by 5 inches and only 2" of your 14" wide wheel is on the inside of the bearing centerline. This puts 86% of your load on one side of your bearings/ball joints. Plus you now have a much longer lever to amplify the force.

Those block heights sound scary. I’d suggest getting full lift springs and removing factory blocks, not adding blocks.

No lifted trucks anywhere? How’s that possible nowadays?

I'm 5'10" and have a Ram 2500 with a 7" lift on 37s. When I am standing beside the truck my eyes are at the same level as the bottom of the side windows. Overall truck height is about 7'6".
