Swapping a Jatco V5A5A (V5A51) automatic transmission with a later model V5AWF (Aisin A750) on a 2008 NS Mitsubishi Pajero (aka Montero aka Shogun).
The torque converter failed on the original transmission.
Additionally, shows the automatic transmission breather hose locations

Great video! I would never attempt this myself but it is great to see it done. I have an nx 2018 with the Aisin A/T and I'm encouraged by your comparison of it against the jatco... my impression is these pajeros are well built and will last if looked after... I had a nissan xtrail with the jatco cvt and it was pretty ordinary, noisy and not terribly responsive to driver input. Glad I'm rid of it.. 😅

Thanks Peter, they are well built but the NS model is a bit rough around the edges compared to the later models. I had an outlander with a CVT, similar experience! Next video will be the engine swap from an NX - stay tuned :)

Mate I'm impressed. I own a PB Challenger with the same JatcoV5A5A. I've been fortunate not to have any issues to date given that I regularly tow 2.5 tonne caravan. I'm running a MM4X4 transmission module (lockup kit) that works a treat, worth looking into. Hope it gives trouble free miles for you.

I was expecting at least 300km+ for mine but I’m not sure dyno tuning my Paj helped the Jatco’s lifespan I have the lockup-mate :) Marshall was very helpful and made a custom version of the software to work with my new setup (NS engine ECU / NT transmission ECU)

I'm fairly particular about servicing the g/b I do it myself and have done roughly 4 full flushes and the rest have been just the pan and filter 9 in total.......anal, but it seems to be paying off. hope all goes well the the new box on yours, its not a cheap exercise either rebuilding or replacing.

Hey Mate, this video should be at 1M likes if it was up to me. Great Job on this. I am actually in need of swapping out my transmission from the NS to the version that you have. I am now freaking out with the mods I have to do on the harness. I wish you had a separate video on just that bit. You have educated me with some crucial info that I did not have. This swap could have been disastrous since I was clueless. Thanks Mate. Do you know, of any other resources on this that you can point me to? what's the type of exhaust pipe you changed from the turbo? any part #s. Thanks

Thanks mate! The wiring is very straight forward - as long as you get the loom that goes up into the dash + the 4WD transfer ECU (and for simplicity, grab the ASC/TC ECU and transmission ECU from the donor car) When you get the transmission ECU, make sure to get the plugs from it and about 10cm of the wiring harness. Here is what I did: I ran 12 extra wires to the transmission ECU from the transmission harness via a 12 pin Deutsch connector, using: 7 core trailer wire; 4 core shielded wire with earth wire (for the input/output shaft speed sensors.. stepper motor cable works well) There was a single wire I ran from the old 4WD transfer ECU wiring on the DASH side (pin 8 on connector D228, a 14 pin connector), which is the OBD pin 1 wire, and connected to the transmission ECU Move pin 2 on connector D227 (10 pin connector), on the TRANSMISSION side of the loom, move to the empty pin 3 on connector D228 (TRANSMISSION side of the loom) - this powers the 4WD transfer ECU Cut / remove pin 10 on connector D225 (the large, 39 pin connector), on the TRANSMISSION side of the loom And some twisted pair to connect the 4WD transfer ECU on to the canbus (splice on to the ASC/TC canbus wires - as those wires are the main bus line) All the wiring diagrams are here faq.out-club.ru/download/pajero_iv/maintenance/Service_Manual_2008_2013/2008_eur/index_M1.htm you can’t go wrong if you test all the wires back to the gearbox. The exhaust is a full system “king brown” from pacemaker I had laying there for years but I didn’t get around to fitting it because my auxiliary fuel tank is in the way at the back of the car. There are other manufacturers as well that may be able to make something that suits your car. Hope this helps your project

Great job!!! Would you happen to know what inputs are required to make the original V5A51 transmission computer function correctly with the original transmission? Ie: in regard to an engine conversion on an '08 model, does the auto ecu just require throttle position from the pedal, vehicle speed sensor input and engine RPM siglal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know the answer. If it physically fits then your only challenge are the electrics - the transmission ecu might not play well in the NM but you could get an aftermarket controller for the v5awf (aisin a750f)

@TravelingBanker is it possible to buy this MUT3 device? After a full forward flush using about 15L of Penrith ATF LV for my Aisin, it's not shifting past 3rd, TC feels like it's slipping a lot and doesn't lock up in gear even with Auto Mate. Is there a way to DM you about this?

Why have you swapped transmission instead of replacing with working one? Newer is better? Why?
@TravelingBanker
@TravelingBanker 2 года назад
Really good question and it is one I asked myself. If you weigh up the cost of a reconditioned Jatco VS what I outlaid for the swap, it worked out a similar cost.. and why would you want a second hand transmission from a different model when you could have a reconditioned replacement for the same price and less hassle? Firstly, the Aisin is simply a better and stronger box with a deep source of spare parts and aftermarket bits. The original transmission had done nearly 260,000km - I read many instances of failure between 250-350,000km for the Jatco whereas the Aisin has a long reputation for reliability at more than 500,000km. The transmission I installed apparently had low kms - about 80,000km.. VS a reconditioned Jatco, I’m ahead on lifespan and even if something does happen, I’ve got lots of late model wrecks to choose from for parts. Secondly, the ECU has been programmed for higher engine output, exceeding what the Jatco was engineered for (this is why Mitsubishi changed to the Aisin for the higher output Pajero engine) - if I replaced what I had with the same, there was a high probability I would be back in the same situation in, maybe, another 100,000km.. not ideal. And lastly, I can’t find anyone who has done this.. but I have seen a lot of people saying either it can’t be done or is not worth the hassle of trying - it was a worthwhile project in the end but there was some procrastinating along the way.

Hi , good job. Next month I´ll swap a V5AWF (170.000 km few bad smell problems) with a newer V5AWF (30.000 km both from Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero 2016). I don´t have the transmission ECU for the new V5AWF. My questions to the expert: Can I expect problems with the Can Bus ? Will be necessary a ECU learning ? Many thanks.
@TravelingBanker
@TravelingBanker Год назад
Gday, sorry I missed your question. No dramas if its the same transmission. You can do an ECU relearn and covered here faq.out-club.ru/download/pajero_iv/maintenance/Service_Manual_2008_2013/2013/23/html/M123114280001600ENG.HTM - once transmission is up to operating temp: In the 5th gear (D range) and with the throttle opening at 25 to 35%, drive until the vehicle speed becomes 80 km/h or more. Subsequently, release the accelerator pedal to decelerate, and stop the vehicle by taking 60 seconds or more. Repeat this process for 10 times. Check the shift shock is good, else repeat procedure.
