Acustica Audio’s version of the legendary black/silver-faced compressor is a leap forward in their dynamics processing library. It’s not a dead match out of the box though; you’ll have to tweak the controls to get all the classic flavour. However this modern rendition has some bells and whistles that you’ll love….

I just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it. Point of clarification: at 15:56 you use the SHMOD knob (shape modulation) but describe its function incorrectly. According to the Nickel manual, position 2 on the knob represents the attack behavior of the original equipment, turning down to 1 speeds up the attack even more (more smashed) and speeds below 1 engage a look ahead to get an even faster attack (scalable from 0-4 milliseconds between 0 and 1 on the knob). To slow the compressor attack and let more transient through, turn up SHMOD above 2. The compressor's standard attack goes from "Fast" ("1" on the attack knob for 70 milliseconds) to what the manual calls "Ultra Fast" ("7" on the knob which is 5 milliseconds). I've heard people say they 1176 goes from "Fast to Faster." So theoretically the slowest attack on this compressor model would be Attack knob at "1" and SHMOD turned up to 4 which would let the most transient through. The compressor may just be color at that point.

I just got the Nebula 4 TimP 76 compressor which is great. Nickel sounds great too. Different type of beast. Im gonna stay with the TimP 76 for a while to finish up the 3-4 project ive started using it. Might get the Nickel when i start something new. Will demo it for sure! Im a 76 collector!

The SOA is the Safe Operation Area, rather than a threshold control. It's the level of operation you should be aiming for and then using the input and output to get the threshold perhaps.

Yes, the "Safe Operation Area" started to appear in Acustica compressors a while ago. I think this is key. SOA is one of the first things to adjust, because if you can get the dynamics of your track to sit inside the same levels that Acustica sampled, that's where you get the most effect and the most accurate response. It's the magic. - EB

Great review as always - I watch and enjoy everything you do - the how-ever bit is: ... Is this an 1176 emulation that doesn't work like a usual 1176 or doesn't work close to an 1176 peice of gear... It seems like a lot of work before it even does what it's supose to do? With lots of extra bits thrown in to make up for the part that doesn't work like an 1176. Sorry guys, but I'd be interested to hear what your added view of this is thanks... 🙂

I use Tim P's U76 a LOT...I wonder how this compares. It might be nice to have another flavor of it...

No question TimP makes exceptional compressors. Among the best. This scores way higher than previous Acqua comps. If you’re as particular about quality as I’m guessing you are, I hope you’ll at least demo it - you’ll probably favour your TimP initially because it’s worked for you for so long….but this saturation is fantastic (not to mention the relative simplicity of use). -CW

@@Mixorcist I think the LN preamp alone sold me on it, just listening to your demonstrations. I've never used a hardware 1176 so I don't know if this is also true of them, but one thing about Tim's U76 is that it really accentuates the mid range (at least, if you are using the preamp plugin along with the compressor). Often that's exactly what I want, but occasionally I run into situations where I like the movement the compressor is giving me but it shifts the tone of the sound too much for that particular application. In such cases, this might be the perfect solution. I also feel like using different versions of plugins on different tracks can help give just a tiny bit more separation in the mix. It probably isn't a huge difference in the end, but maybe it adds up. If you put five hardware LA-2As in a room, for instance, none of them are going to sound exactly the same.

Oh my.. I just tried the demo version... What a Mess honestly... So unstable It seems like the output knob actually made the compressor work which is strange to me.. Way too much time to dial in a sound.. Using Studio One Pro 5 it crashed every time. I think they're on to something with the sound of this plugin however way too many bugs and difficulty in dialing in something good.. Waiting to see what they do. Thank you for the review. Love your passion for sound...

I was just thinking today about my favourite all-time software compressors. UAD LA2A and UAD Distressor. Brainworx Shadow Hills too. This is pretty fun though….. -CW

I'm a bit of an Acustica fanboy, but Nickel & Smoke sound like ass. I love almost everything they do but these 2 sound weird. Fingers crossed they do a 176 one day.
