Does this one sound different than just a good digital EQ to you? Pomona I understand the saturation is doing very very little.... And it's all about the curves. But is there anything else going on nonlinear? Mid-side in there is good.... I guess the workflow and the curves could feel really good to someone.... This one sort of confused me.
Wow! This didn't show up on my youtube feed at all. Happy to have found it, though. Great episode! Interesting thoughts on AI, I seem to be in the minority on my full embrace of it (as audience) and complete rejection of it as an artist's tool (when making my own music).
Hey Hugo! Howzit going? AI is insanely good for some things. I just made a four-hour course and AI transcribed and summarized all of it. What a time saver. I do a lot of marketing and copy work and everything it makes sounds like it was written by the same marketer. Some of the artwork is great for social media, with Adobe having particularly good tech. ChatGPT is great at brainstorming. Drafting legal terms and conditions. But as a replacement for a creative person, I don’t think it will ever be there.
By the way….the reason you didn’t see it is because RU-vid instantly caught that we’d used the video-only Apple ad, and immediately told its mommy. We were then told that they’re “not allowed to lend” and we weren’t able to publish until we took it out. But the internet is your friend, and you should spend more time on social media, consuming content. :-)
I mean…it’s fast, but how does it replace an actual camera, or guitar, or piano, any more than the OG iPad did? I still see people playing actual instruments, not using iPads to make music. Until we have direct neural connections to a piece of tech like this, it’s never going to be good enough for most creatives simply because we can’t interface with it at the necessary level. Such an interface seems possible in principle…but the iPad ain’t it. IMO
There is no substitute to the way a cranked Marshall shakes your pants. I suppose we could all go to a club with the spotlight on an iPad on a stool - amp sims; drum samples, loops and AI vocals (auto-tuned). But why would you?
The Sidecar plugin sounds great. Something I found curious is how there can be such a large difference depending on what A/D converter simulation is used.
Great video gents. Firstly, I'm totally with Chris regarding NFTs. Never understood the value there. I also agree with Eric that AI can be useful as part of software tools. In terms of creation of art, yes AI will continue to add to the noise, but there will always be a premium on good quality human expression. Let's also not forget that the AI model must be trained using human created work.
Now the next generation of legendary artist will be very groundbreaking because ai cannot make new styles. Ai has to be trained on a large data set of prior works to function. When a new sound comes out I think it won’t be ai generated but definitely ai mixed or mixed using these new smart tools lol. These new smart /ai plugs for mixing can be a godsend for songwriters who don’t want to open up the deep technical Pandora’s box which is music production.
I think this is the only video I haven't watched by you guys...never heard EB's voice in this context...just realizing now how much you sound like Trent Reznor!
Great video! The flat version has a side chain that goes to 300hz. You can also slide from mid to side for the peak stop & the limiter. The flat version is more advanced 😊
hey guys, yeah I tried that plugin out a few days ago, sounds really nice. I was wondering what microphone are you using, the one without the pop screen on it, is that one of those affordable Neumann's because it sounds really good. Let me know if you don't mind. Thanks
For sure - its a Neumann TLM103. I use it for some of my video voiceover work. EB does some processing on it during the recording - i think its a bit of Waves RVox and maybe some EQ. Thanks for the question and the comment! - CW
So I realize that it's mostly going to be used by guys wanting a vintage sound for rock and similar genres, but what about EDM??? Do you think you can get away with using this in a dance music context?
Hmmm. That's a really good question. I for one LIKE the sound of digital in certain contexts, and modern synths and samples is a good example. Most of the tone-shaping and effects that come in a good production DAW like logic do an amazing job on EDM. There's something to be said for crisp, precise EQ's, fast compressors, etc. I know guys like deadmau5 lean toward SSL and Neve equipment, but if you like the sound of retro R&B, dance, etc...an API would be equally well at home. It just might add more weight, smear, dirt than you like. I always say that the stepped frequencies and gain controls on an API EQ are a great fit for drums and guitars, but might not be for a more modern synth. And keep in mind, the compressor at play here is actually a Fairchild, which is even more 'vintage' and has a slower, more 'molten' effect. Actual API compressors (like you might find on a 2500 or the UA API Vision Channel) have new/old modes with selectable knees and faster attack/release options (and deeper ratios too). If you can demo this product, try it for yourself and see. Let us know what you think
@@Mixorcist hey CW! I'm deep into writing songs for my next album. It is slow going, but it does bring results. I'm just following the muse where it takes me. when do we hear YOUR new songs?!?!?!?!?
I actually felt the same way. Smart limit was my go to but I have a bunch of limiters (having plugin acquisition syndrome. I tried the demo and was blown away. Bought it immediately.
@@kevinwilliams6006 no other Limiter could beat Sonnox Limiter, so that's my main choice. I don't like AA generally, I have three AA plugins, never use them, though. I am not tempted to evrn demo it.
@@kevinwilliams6006 Sorry guys! Not trying to add to the world financial crisis! As you know, we only tend to review plugins that leave a great impression, and this one will be very useful for me personally...since the review I've been using it a lot and really like it.
You and me both. I have a pay a carbon offset tax every time I scroll through my AA plug-ins folder. I need a search and filter feature. Thanks for your comment and I hope you check out the demo! - CW
Yes I had Giancarlo (among others) school me on that in the FB group....although you were the first - how did I miss that?!? Thanks for the comment! - CW
Ozone is one of the few I never got around to using. Let us know how it compares. I'm definitely using this for a montlh or two just to switch it up and get deep into the different models....CW
The Ozone Maximizer is my favorite also. It seems to always sound the best to me. Going to try this one and see how it compares! Thanks for the video. @@Mixorcist
Pulsar Modular really do go above and beyond. I have 2 of their pieces and they really are gems in my library. A little pricey yes, but worth every penny. Great job gents.
Always enjoy seeing boutique producers injecting their own take on things. This was a lot of fun to play with! Thanks for checking in and commenting! - CW
Love waking up on a Monday to a new Mixorcist vid. Thanks for this! I saw the release late last night and was happy to see first thing this morning that you guys were checking it out. Gonna demo it and see if its for me!
@sure! compare the sunray eq from AA with the 440 from pulsar modular. The 440 is more creamy. As mentioned, it`s a boutique hardware. My next plugin from pulsar modular will be the p11. I like the sound. Wait for a sale.
What a great way to start a Monday: a new video. Pulsar Modular does great job, and Marc Daniel Nelson has such a zen way of thinking about mixing. Love his passion for sound and texture and space. Most of the time I can't hear what he says he hears, but I don't doubt he is hearing it. My ear is either not that train or my circuitry is not that hi-fi. Nonetheless this sounds and looks like a tool that can make many other plugins redundant. Lately I've been trying to find tools/tutorials to try to achieve a "modern vintage" sound in the box. I'm thinking of the sound aesthetics of the album " Enfant Terrible" by Liam Bailey and St Francis Hotel. Would you have any advice at all on how to try to get there? Trying to pick your brain since you guys are so knowledgeable and experienced. Warm regards from Mexico
Hey Hugo - CW here. thank you for the comment! I have to admit I'm not familiar with Liam Bailey - let me explore this week and maybe I/we can offer a few ideas!
For the sound you are after, try Lunar Lander (Delay/Reverb) and the P450 EQ and a compressor. That's it and you have the broad strokes not over processed sound.
I just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it. Point of clarification: at 15:56 you use the SHMOD knob (shape modulation) but describe its function incorrectly. According to the Nickel manual, position 2 on the knob represents the attack behavior of the original equipment, turning down to 1 speeds up the attack even more (more smashed) and speeds below 1 engage a look ahead to get an even faster attack (scalable from 0-4 milliseconds between 0 and 1 on the knob). To slow the compressor attack and let more transient through, turn up SHMOD above 2. The compressor's standard attack goes from "Fast" ("1" on the attack knob for 70 milliseconds) to what the manual calls "Ultra Fast" ("7" on the knob which is 5 milliseconds). I've heard people say they 1176 goes from "Fast to Faster." So theoretically the slowest attack on this compressor model would be Attack knob at "1" and SHMOD turned up to 4 which would let the most transient through. The compressor may just be color at that point.
I wonder why no one here thinks about simple things? :1) Volume comparisons. 2) Do these adults hear anything Objective in SONY headphones? As a result, they make the sound very sharp and loud. Plus there are a lot of conversations because of which the audio constantly “jumps” in volume. Very bad video.
Been too long, great video update fellas! Your vids always feel like I'm hanging with my friends. Keep it up and would love to see another LONG end of year video for 2023 with all your horror/plug-in favs. I remember I watched a bunch of horror recs from your video last year. Hope to see ya soon!
