the mixpre6II is one of the most amazing piece of engineering i ve invested in. plus the support before i even bought one was outstanding. this little device is a revolution on set and in my studio, it basically became the center piece of everything. great job, sound devices!
Thanks a lot for the video. I still find this tutorial a little confusing at some points. I wished you had more examples to describe the functions more easily.
Hey guys, great info ! Thanks for that. One question though. Say you're on set recording audio for a movie. Is it possible to enter scene/shot/take numbers as iXML metadata as you go so that it is readable directly upon import by Final Cut Pro X ? Thanks !
Thanks for the videos. Any idea if I can opt not to send an audio channel to the stereo mix, but still record that channel in ISO? I would like to use this for recording our sports announcers on Channels 1 and 2 and send those only to the headphones and the audio out port for backup recording on the camera. I would use the third (or 4th) channel to record the stadium announcer so that later I can mix that track in when needed in editing. My announcers don't like the stadium feed in their headphones and I would also prefer it is not on my backup recording in the camera. The videos on the MixPre series I have watched today don't address this issue. If anyone knows, please reply. Thanks!
thanks! how does the Mid Side work?does it give instant MS stereo on the mode live/recording or need processing of the Side track later? Mean do I get a full MS stereo at once?
In Advanced Mode, the MixPre-6 is configured as a eight-channel recorder with user-selectable 44.1, 48, 96 and 192 kHz sample rate and 16 and 24bit depth. The LR mix tracks may be recorded as well as each of the six channels as individual isolated (ISO) tracks. Audio for the ISO tracks is recorded “prefade” meaning before the channel knob gain, so any changes that are made there will only affect the LR mix and have no affect on the recorded ISO track levels. This is particularly useful for post-production audio processing where it may be desirable to create an alternate mix of the tracks at a later stage. Information from user guide
Is there a way to switch from controlling the faders with the four knobs to controlling the gain of each channel in advanced mode? I need easy access to gain.
This is the deal-changer for me also! Curtis Judd wrote in the comments of his overview (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-McW2QqVh1jM.html&lc=z12sxzz5cqrsfzbrr04cc1digvf1t3ajleo.1496030389195707) "If you switch to *custom mode* you can use the *knobs as gain trim* ." if this is true, these is my device i was waiting long time for :-)
I have the Mixpre 6 with firmware version 8.0. For recording in Advanced Mode, press Ch 1 knob and I can change the Gain level. If I go to Menu > Record , I have Left Gain and Right Gain. What is the difference between Channel gain and Left/ Right gain ?
I have a mixpre3ii and was wondering- if I’m running my main mixer xlr out into 1 and 2 (L and R) and I pan them accordingly- is this an ok solution for a stereo in? I noticed that when I change the option from mic to line it’s muted- is this because line isn’t an option on the 3?
It sounds like you are capturing a board feed? Running stereo and panning should be fine. When you switch to Line is the Mute icon glowing or is it just not passing signal?
The video discusses stereo ( 2Ch.) recording scenarios. Just a technical question: What kind of output wav file do you get if say you wanted to record more than 2 inputs? Like for instance all 4 mic inputs on the MixPre 6 as individual channels (or ISOs, to use the misnomer)? Is there such a thing as a 4 ch. wav file, or do you end up with 4 mono wav files? Thanks.
The answer to my own question: You get a poly (multitrack) wav file. This can be split into mono tracks using free SW from SD. This may be needed if you are a FCPX user which only has a limited capability handling this type of file.
@@xxHouseInMotionxx I don't actually know regarding the MixPre. I eventually went with a Sound Devices 633 as it suited my needs better. This records to poly wav files by default. My guess is the MixPre would do the same.
Hi Chris! Why is there 3 Tracks(L,R and Ch1) when I record a boom on Ch1? What is the meaning of L, R additionally with Ch1? My setup is just one MKH416 connected to CH1 on MixPre3 and I am trying to record talking head.. Is there any additional benefit in quality of audio output or editing workflow if I use all 3 (L,R and Ch1) in final Video? Is it OK to record on Ch1 without the L and R? Should I just get rid of L and R? Is L and R really required for single Mic setup? What is the purpose of L and R?
Question. Im in advance mode and when Im recording it usually save to my flash drive for back up. It doesn't do that anymore. Is there a setting that I can just have it automatically backup the files in my flash drive again?

Hi guys, great video! But I cannot figure out the difference between L&R linked and L&R (separate) in the record menu. Where is the difference? How does this affect the output file? Thank you very much and best wishes, Gert
I posed this on their website and waiting for a response... its quite a bit of a problem for me since I want to be able to use a shotgun mic and a stereo pair at the same time and be able to control their levels post mix... seems like ch 1-4 is all mixed down to 2 channels. So essentially my recordings were trash pretty much with a bland stereo image when a stereo lab pair and a shotgun. Dragged it into reaper and it showed 2 channels only... I saw and heard channel 3 in the headphones and on the monitor... so did this just get mixed down into 1 file????
Our resellers have been taking MixPre Series pre-orders since April 19, and there has been a great response. Based on this response we do have a backorder and are working to fill all orders as fast as possible. We recommend talking to a reseller (of your choice) to make certain you are on their list and have units on order. Thanks for the note, and we appreciate your patience in advance!
I have a MixPre-3 and would like to conect it via bluetooth to a Sony WH-1000XM3 headset. I found the "Bluetooth ON/OFF" switch in the menu but that is it. How can i pair them together???
@@sounddev I thought about using my wireless headphones as "monitors" but that´s not possible without the app and i don´t want to use any app. I just wanted to get rid of one cable. That´s it.
Custom mode might be too "custom" to do a video on! To create a Custom mode preset, you'll simply toggle on which features you would like more advanced control over.
what a machine you built. I own a Nagra VII and frankly, I wish it wouldnt feel and look like a DIY-case in comparison to the build quality of the mixpre.
@@felipeeufrazio1044 It looks rather silly. And it can be difficult to use the touch screen. But the quality has been fantastic. I'm getting use to it.
Apparently, those physical pot trims do not record to ISO tracks, which makes them redundant if you are only interested ISOs, not the L/R mix. You have to go into the touch screen submenu to set each gain and that's the level recorded, not the sum of the trim and the gain. Apparently, you can use the custom menu to set the trim knobs to adjust the entire gain sweep - but that is a HUGE range. Why can't they just sum the two gains stages in advanced mode to record ISOs (or have that option)? That is what most recordists would want. All this is a hassle and a deal-breaker for me.
Yeah essentially the knobs are same as post fader. Like the faders on a mixing desk, to set the the actual gain you have to use the touchscreen, it is a bit of a pain in the ass! The preamp quality is very good tho. And it's a bit tricky to set up with a computer. So if you want to use it as an interface It would be better to use good quality interface at a similar price point. But if you want it for standalone on the road use, then the quality of the pres are very good. Albeit the small headphone jack, small line out, and no line-ins. Can work around it but is not ideal. I mainly got it for high quality recording on the road.
@@sounddev One quick question then .... In advance mode, how do I use one mic, in input one to deliver equal stereo sound to two channels ... try as I may ... I see it's in stereo mode, but visually only placing audio on one side of the stereo display ... I'd like to see it write on, & register on both sides of the display, like it does in basic. Thanks again, :)
@@sounddev Thank you for following up! :) Ok, I'm currently using a shure Beta 58, which actually sounds great in the basic mode of this unit, and today, I picked up a quality splitter ... Any last minute helpful hints to keep this simple, and running at 32 bit raw?
