Good review! I was thinking of gifting this device to a friend who loves retro gaming. It seems like a great little device for any on-the-go gaming! Also, the fact that you can connect multiple handhelds for multiplayer games is just icing on the cake!
Yeah, I have really enjoyed getting into these retro handhelds and playing the games I enjoyed when I was a kid. I hope others will enjoy them as much as I have!
Hey Henry, I just wanted to come back to this video to say thanks! I'd been mulling over picking up one of these for a while, but your video convinced me to pull the trigger and I've been having a great time with it.
Thanks! Ive been considering getting a miyoo mini plus but i couldnt figure out what onion actually did as most of the explanations were really teachy, but this was pretty helpful!
I tried out the RG35XX plus first and it just wasn't for me. OS experience completely killed any enjoyment of it. Anyways, I've been watching tons of reviews on MM+ now to replace it and this review was so good. Thanks and can't wait to try it out.
You said not for those that want to binge game but I've used my Gameboy micro for years and I've spent up to 9 hours playing at one time on one and I'd say that's more cramped than this
Yeah, I don't disagree that some people won't have any issues with it for long sessions. Some people even prefer it. I wanted to express that if someone knows they might have issues with smaller devices, they were specifically buying a handheld for binge gaming, there might be better options for comfort. I could have been a little more concise with my words. Thanks for your input!
A pretty dumb UI problem you didn't mention is the virtual keyboard for searching files or setting Wi-Fi password. If you hit enter on a letter and quickly move the curser to the next letter, the next letter might be the one entering the text bar. Since OnionOS didn't overwrite this UI function and Miyoo didn't update it either, this issue persists til this day. Another launcher, Allium, uses its own virtual keyboard, and fixes this issue, but that's a much simpler OS.
Odd issue. I never noticed it probably because I have a smaller library and don't use the search feature that much. I just checked the keyboard for the wifi, and you are right, it does have that issue. Tried to get the issue to occur with the game search keyboard and was not able to, so it seems it might have been fixed there.
A MMP would be super cool to have... except I permanently injured my thumb so I need a joystick instead of a d-pad. So I've got a RG35XX-H on the way. Hoping it'll be physically comfortable to use.
i see some reviews that say this plays n64 not bad others say it dosent play ps1 well.seems mixed opinions or b.s not sure which one thanks for the video
I'm also thinking of gifting this. Can someone answer this for me....if I install Onion, does that mean I need to install every game over? Is that an easy process?
If you want to keep the Roms that came with the device the best way is to: Before you format the SD card copy the Roms folder from the SD card over to your computer Then install Onion OS. After the Onion OS install move the Roms folder you copied over earlier to the computer to the SD card.
There is a V4.2.2 version available, if your wifi is on, it shows on the boot up screen update available. How did you add that Logo tweak in the apps menu?
Yeah I didn't want to upgrade in the middle of filming but I just ran the OTA update and it worked great. I used the app here github.com/schmurtzm/Miyoo-Mini-easy-logotweak. All you have to do is extract the zip find the folder named easylogotweak and drag that into your Apps folder on your OnionOS SD card. Just a warning, that because this is something that writes to the nand on the MM+ itself there is risk of bricking the device. I have never seen that happen but just make sure your battery is charged and you are using a good SD card and there should be no issues.
Thanks for bringing this up.I do think Koriki is a great OS and i am glad it is an option for people. Personally I like Onion OS more, but that is just personal preference. I would suggest anyone who is curious to check out Koriki and other OS options.
Depends on your budget and if you still want a vertical design like the MM+. I would recommend looking at the Ambernic RG353vs for the same gameboy feel if you want something larger. But if you are looking for a horizontal system retroid pocket 2s is a good option. There are better options if you are looking for something to play N64 and newer games but you get closer to the 150-200$ price range
Hello i got my new miyoo mini plus and the games is very little if i download onion os will they be more games for me in ps1 games very little do they get bigger?
Thank you for this I am thinking of buying one for an 18 hour flight do I need wifi to play the games? and can I connect my bluetooth headphones to it?
Nope, you don't need wifi to play them as the games are on the SD card. It does not have Bluetooth so you will either want wired headphones or a Bluetooth transmitter. I have another video where I go over some of these options, but to sum it up. The Bluetooth transmitter I recommend amzn.to/44wTwgb if you are going that route costs around 20 dollars and will have some audio delay. If you think that might bother you I would stick with some wired earbuds or headphones.
Yeah, I have been testing out the Ambernic RG405 for a review video and I do have to say I love the 4 inch screen and the wider form factor. But it is like 3 times the price of a MM+ and I find myself missing the game switcher from Onion OS.
Leaf green on the stock OS Miyoo mini is bugged and doesn’t let people go past the SS Anne. Buyers beware! Is there a way to still use this save state on the ROM with onion os?
Save states can only be moved over when it uses the same emulator or Retroarch core. It normally is a lot safer/easier to move over normal in game save game file than a save state, but it can be done.
It does not have Bluetooth built in and you would be required to get a Bluetooth transmitter for it. Most of the time the audio delay makes it not worth it.
Does it support Bluetooth earbuds? Its not make or break for me, but man would that be a nice thing when the Mrs is asleep and I’m just layin there playing FF or something
www.etsy.com/listing/1531838558/nintendo-gameboy-label-aufkleber-sticker I would also browse around on Etsy for stickers you might find something you like more.
Most, if not all, the SD cards that come with these devices are poor quality and prone to fail. It's recommended to get a name brand SD card like Samsung or SanDisk.
Bluetooth audio will have some latency and has been hit or miss with some of the other devices I have tried. It would still be nice to have the option and I hope Miyoo starts adding it to their future devices.
@@PhyrexTechs It depends on your headphones, I have unnoticeable latency with my expensive ones, paired with my PC on a stupid Bluetooth dongle I bought 10 years ago for cheap...
BT audio delay depends on many factors. Yes high quality headphones can help reduce delay with things like "gaming / low latency" modes. But more importantly, devices with complicated drivers and software such as PCs and Phones can utilize software delays built into these drivers to make sure the audio and video are better synced. This is why when using BT transmitters for TVs that don't natively support BT you need to use devices that support APTX low latency to avoid issues with long latency. Most of these devices that run custom linux firmware are going to struggle with latency, like you said good headphones will mitigate some of that but definitely not all of it and it will depend on how much you are affected by these delays. Some people won't notice it that much while other will hate it. My high quality headphones have: 50-90ms latency on my PC, 30-50ms my APTX low latency TV transmitter. 200-500ms on a these handheld devices lowered to 100-200 with gaming mode on.
I have not had an SD card fail on me yet personally. However if you look online you will find 100s of others that have had the stock SD card fail on them.
Onion OS helps out with that. It has two ways you can manage the emulated in-game time (RTC) Automatically: By default, 4hrs will be added to the clock every time you boot your device. You can adjust this amount in Apps > Tweaks > System > Startup. Manually: You can specify the date and time in the Clock App, installed via Apps > Package Manager.
I'd rather get the r35s. I was considering this device too but i did indeed get de r35s and im loving it. It has a better screen and joysticks. A must for me
I have not gotten to use the R35s. However, it looks like a good device for $50. The only thing I think might bother me would be how the joysticks are higher than the buttons and D pad. I hope to be able to check it out sometime.
Well you can either contact the seller or you could look up "Tiny Best Set Go" or "Done Set" on Internet Archive as those are the most popular Rom collections people like to start with for the MMP.
You cannot. N64 is just a little too demanding for it. IMO the best handhelds for N64 would be Retroid Pocket 2+/3, Ambernic RG353P / RG353V, or even Ambernic RG405M. You can go wrong with any of those.
I have a MM+ and the original Miyoo Mini 2.8" screen one. I still prefer the smaller form factor for some reason. Biggest drawback is the fragile build and poor quality control.
Well that depends on which game you think is the best Donkey Kong game. For me that is Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES. But if you are talking about the original then arcade(mame) or gameboy is a great option.
Mine came with NES: 1, 2 ,3 SNES: All-stars, RPG, Kart, World, World 2(YI) Not sure if this has changed however if any are missing they are easy to get added.
Sounds like you got a defective device, which sucks but does not mean it's a scam. This can happen with any product. I'm curious where you bought it from and would recommend you reach out to that store and either request a replacement or a refund.
@@PhyrexTechs whatgeek they wont refund or help me said its just a dead pixel they all have them and some will have more dead pixels the screen is actually cracked its not dead pixels at all! terrible experience im also getting horrizontal glitching in every game so the screen must be damaged, cheers im super annoyed ive read so much about these being good.
I have never used whatgeek but that sounds terrible. I would take a bunch of clear pictures of your issues, send it to them and let them know if they are not going to allow for a return/refund or replacement you are will be posting the issues you have had on all of your social media accounts. Which I think you really should do to let other know about this if they don't fix your issue.
@@PhyrexTechs OH i will 100% be doing exactly that already taken photos so that will not be a problem :') fingers crossed if i get another its not cracked and un supported
