I have just got two Dansette Majors to restore.
Both have faulty mains smoothing capacitors and require all the normal work.
The MK2 Major came with some nice goodies including the original Dansette demonstration record. I saved playing it this evening until I had repaired the amp in the MK1 Major so I could share it with you!
Hope you enjoy watching! :)

Ahhh, it all came rushing back - from 61 to 5 years old in a flash! Just brilliant!

Those are 2 beautiful phonographs. And I really enjoyed hearing that record with their use of BBC English or Queen's English, very formal and all that (:->

@727JeffN Thanks Jeff! I'm amazed the 'so called' record even plays! It is literally a piece of card with some 50+ year old cellophane stuck to it...haha!!! More like an advert to buy their own needles than anything else...haha!!! Thanks for commenting! :)

@pyestudiocolour Thanks Neil! Yes...Exactly the same thoughts went through my head! "Only Dansette" How naughty is that?...haha!!! I've wanted one of these demo records ever since I got one with the cellophane missing! It is proof positive the name is pronounced 'Dan-Set' You wouldn't believe the amount of arguments this has caused over the years for me! So many people call them 'Dan-Sette'...haha!!! I love what you've done with the Pioneer! It looks Superb! Thanks for commenting! :)

Many years ago I bought a Dansette record player well second hand. It was at the time; after some leaky coupling and filter caps replaced etc, not too bad for Margolins rubbish. It was the only one I ever saw with PP O/P. A pair of ECL82 bottles as I remember. I believe one triode in one ECL82 was the phase splitter and the other one the input voltage amplifier from the horrid ceramic cartridge used. We called the cheap seperate bass and treble control circuit "harsh or muffled". I sold it at a decent profit. Has anyone seen one of these. The Pye Black Box of about the same period was much nicer to listen to.

My old BSR has an original 32-32 / 275v electrolytic cap which is needs replacing just wondering what type of electrolytic caps your using as a replacement? I see a bag of small ones there so Im thinking you using a few of them in in parallel circuit thanks for your help

+Steves Projects You can now buy 32-32uf 500v replacement capacitor cans on a popular internet auction site. But the ones I have found are not a direct physical replacement (too wide) In your situation I would probably use 2 x 33uf 450v capacitors maximum working temp of 105 C. All that is in that smoothing can of yours are 2 x 32uf capacitors with the neutral wires twisted together to give the 3 terminals. (1 positive to each capacitor and 1 common neutral.) 32uf capacitors are hard to find now. The modern equivalent is 33uf. You can always use slightly higher uf...Never lower! The voltage rating is the maximum they will take before they go bang.I always prefer a higher tolerance maximum working voltage. Hope that helps :)

+GarrardAT6 Thanks for your help Ordering parts international from australia takes forever so I might just order some 33uf 450v capacitors as you suggest from rs-components aust. Yes you are quite right after pulling the 32/32 cap off the chassis low and behold the ground of the can is the negative side with the 2 internal pins being positive rather scary had know idea these lethal high volt caps backed on to electrics chassis which of course is isolated from the turntable metal chassis using plywood as an insulator........YIKES imagine trying to get away with that today UPDATE After all that the original caps were all fine the wire on the centre terminal of the volume potentiometer was broken hence the hum and the very little audio coming from the speaker cannot believe these 1954 capacitors are still working

From the price calculator this record player would cost £446.42 today [18.5 gns = nineteen pounds eight shillings and sixpence] not cheap then or now. I have always pronounced Dansette "Dans-ette" Good video

@pyestudiocolour Stop it Neil...You're making me laugh my head off...haha!! I had the Volvo scenario only last week...I noticed a friend of mine say 'Vol-Vol'...haha!!! After I stood there pointing at the badge trying get him to pronounce it phonetically I gave up when he said 'Ingine' instead of 'engine'...The worst part is he works for the AA...haha!! As far as the pronunciation of Dansette goes...I now have the Demo record as an MP3 on my phone should I ever have further disputes..haha!!! :)

The only answer I can give...They last as long as they last...Yours may run for another 44 years! You may turn it on tomorrow and the buzz could deafen you! They don't start to go...They just go...haha!!! I have a 1956 Junior on the bench which needs a new transformer...The mains smoothing is fine! I have a 1960 Dansette Major next to it that the mains smoothing has completely failed! If it works leave it...When, or if it fails...Repair it! More importantly...Enjoy it! :)

I have 4 good UA8's all needing speed control knobs myself...haha!!! People break them off trying to force the speed to change when the selector shaft is seized. I bought a whole player last week with a BSR UA8 in just to part it out for the knobs and turntable mat...Unless you are lucky and find one for sale on eBay...There are none to be had anymore...Sorry no ideas here
