You should do "I thought it was gone" moments

Two unwritten bits of advice for players and umpires. First, for players. When you have two strikes against you, you need to mentally expand the strike zone, and defend the plate. Just try to foul off the pitch to stay alive, and wait for a mistake (like a hanging breaking ball) to get a chance to get on base. Second, for umpires or would be umpires. You will soon learn that every decision you make is going to make someone unhappy. You aren’t there to win popularity contests. Don’t go looking for trouble (stay away from the benches or dugouts unless absolutely necessary - and don’t have rabbit ears). Also, there’s also the golden rule. Treat players and coaching staffs with respect and courtesy, the way we all like to be treated. One can control a game while also being calm and assertive. Don’t let your emotions control your reactions, and don’t hold grudges against players or coaches/managers who gave you a hard time in past games. I was doing a pretty good men’s league game, when late in the game, the coach and player was unhappy with a called third strike. He went ballistic, and I had no choice but to eject him. I was relating this story to another umpire, and he said the anger wasn’t really directed at me, that the other umpire had worked that team’s previous game, and that there was a very controversial call, and that his anger and frustration was high, and I just happened to be the target. But he was careful not to make physical contact. In fact that game was the first of a doubleheader, and he played the second game (which his team won), and he behaved very well. For my part, the incident was in the past. It’s a new game, and a fresh start. I actually very rarely had to eject anyone. Sometimes, a player might seem to be angry with you, but his real frustration is with himself. That’s especially the case when a player is in a slump. I was doing a high school game years ago, when the batter struck out, and he shouted the f-bomb as he walked back to the bench. I knew immediately that he was angry with himself. He never even looked at me. Now that kind of language isn’t appropriate at that level of baseball, but I didn’t eject him. Instead, I approached his coach, told him I knew he wasn’t angry with me, or with the call, and I just asked the coach to find a different way of expressing his frustration, and the coach was most cooperative. He saw the at-bat, and knew exactly what happened. Finally, any time a player or coach approached me with a question, and were calm and respectful, I would take the time to listen, and then either explain the call, or the details of a particular rule. I wanted them to know that I was approachable, and they could come out and calmly ask me any questions. (Unless they started to complain about a play in a previous game).

Everyone knows Angel Hernandez is a terrible ump and will be the reason we have robot umps in 5 years but that pitch was actually closer to a strike than some of his other calls. It was still a ball but without that box at first glance it looked closer at least to my eyes.

I think it would be more interesting if anytime an umpire tosses a player for arguing a call and then the player is proven right, the umpire should have his pay forfeited for that game.
