Thank you so much for this speech, Dr. King. I am so thankful for being a maladjusted man ever since I was born.

I heard this speech in a BBC Documentary called Century of the Self Episode 2. They put it in the context of him calling out the oppressive psychoanalysis that made sure people would conform to society to prevent their animalistic violent etc tendencies. Marcuse was critical of the role that psychoanalysis played in modern society and believed that it was used to maintain the status quo and reinforce traditional values and social hierarchies. In his work, Marcuse argued that psychoanalysis had been co-opted by the dominant social order and used to reinforce traditional values and maintain the status quo. He argued that the focus on the individual psyche and the emphasis on adjusting to social norms and expectations served to distract people from the larger social and political issues that were impacting their lives. Marcuse believed that this focus on the individual psyche served to reinforce the idea that social change was impossible and that people should instead focus on adjusting to the world as it is.

If you’d asked me when I was 12 if I respected MLK, I would’ve said I did. It’s disturbing in hindsight to realize what I actually respected was the whitewashed version of him fabricated after his death because his radical notions of equality made white people uncomfortable. His maladjusted life was a threat to the white supremacy that’s systemic to American institutions, so his legacy was adjusted. I must’ve heard the “I have a dream speech” a dozen times through elementary school, but I in my late teens before I heard a second speech he gave and began to understand what he actually stood for.
