MY LIFE STORY OF ENGINE OIL... My first car was a old 1998 Honda accord and I use Valvoline simply because the name sounded nice lol 😆 😅 and the price was reasonable 😅... Never had issue with it. Then I switch to more expensive Royal Purple because it again sounded nice and the color of the oil I'm like WHAAAAT... I was young OK... My second car was a old 2000 Toyota Celica with the Manual Transmission. My first Manual transmission car and the first Manual I learn from. The car had a bad oil burning issue and I had to constantly check the oil level every week to top off, but other then the oil burning the engine actually runs fine mechanically. During this time I use the cheapest brand I could find because I was topping off the oil level constantly every week and was cutting into my wallet, so I went cheap. My third car was a 2006 Toyota 4runner with the 4.7 V8. This time I did my research and did a lot of asking around and most people told me go with Mobil 1 and that it was the best. So I use Mobil 1 on my 4runner for 4 years. I usually do oil change around 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark. But the issue with with Mobil 1 was that when ever I reach that 4,000 to 5,000 mark I feel my engine feeling sluggish and each time I do a oil change I always tell myself "I sure love new oil because the engine just feels so good each time I get new oil" For the longest time I thought that was normal. Then as I got older and got more busy with life I decided to take my 4runner to the shop for oil change instead of doing it myself like I did in the past. I went to the closes location which was Firestone and I notice that they use Pennzoil. Up to that point I've notice Pennzoil but I never use it before so I decided to go went with it. The first time using Pennzoil when I hit that 4,000 to 5,000 miles mark my engine didn't feel sluggish and that suprise me alot. Because with Mobil 1 when ever I get to that 4,000 to 5,000 mark my engine would always feel sluggish but not with Pennzoil. I was really shock because up to that point I thought it was just a normal thing. So I did another round of Pennzoil and again the engine didn't feel sluggish with the Pennzoil when I hit that 4,000-5,000 mile mark. So on the next oil change I went back to Mobil 1 just to see if I'm tripping or not and sure enough once I hit that 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark my engine felt sluggish again with Mobil 1. So ever since then I made the switch to Pennzoil and it have been 4 years of me using Pennzoil. Since then I've brought a Tundra and Pennzoil is all I use for that Tundra. Pennzoil is my brand of choice and I've been using it for 4 years now. And that's my experience with engine oil, literally hands on life experience.

I’ve used Mobil 1 extended performance oil and filters since early 2000’s. I’ve had good results with one vehicle purchased new in 2004 running great with almost zero oil consumption (10K mile oci) until and trans issue took it off the road last year with 208,000 on it. With all that said I’m impressed with the performance numbers and filter construction of the premium Pennzoil products. I will be switching over as I use up my reserves of Mobil 1. The membership stores (BJs,. Sam's and Costco) and Walmart offer it at good prices. Mobil 1 was used and recommended by Porsche in the air cooled 911 engines. @@jimmy1life Make sure to change out your PCV valve.. I think the best thing is to get in the car, start it, check the dash for any lights that say bad things, set the things you want on, and leave... Sitting in the driveway warming it up is not always a good thing.. The sooner you get moving, the sooner the engine with a load on it now, warms up, and the oil temperature takes the longest to warm up to the best temp for it to flow, etc... BMW "M" cars have an oil temp gauge that will not allow you to rev the motor until the oil temperature is at the right degree so that it is flowing to all the parts at their specified pressure..

I can confirm that using Mobil 1 in my 3.5 Ecoboost SHO makes the engine ticking sound much louder. I know the high pressure fuel pump makes a lot of noise, but using Mobil 1 just makes the engine tick like crazy. Almost sounds kind of like the cam lobes are hitting the buckets with no oil in between at all (even though I've never heard this actually happening, I would imagine it would sound like this if no oil situation ever happened) 😂 I'm sure Mobil 1 didn't cause more wear than other oils. There's a lot more ticking sound with Mobil 1 in all engines I've used Mobil 1 in. You're not the only one that noticed that, It seems that most people think Mobil 1 is loud in their engines. So far, Amsoil and Pennzoil Platinum has been the best with engine noise reduction. With Amsoil, my engines are so so much quieter when I listen to the engine with the hood open, and the noise difference is also noticeable in the cabin. Its amazing how an oil can change the way an engine sounds, even though the oils are the same viscosity, just different brands.

I change it every 5-6 months even though its always way under mileage, mainly cause it gets driven on a a lot of shorter trips to work. I can't ever find it anywhere like Walmart in stock and don't want to pay the parts store prices so I just get it off Amazon. And an OEM Mototrcraft filter. I did have an open ended K&N filter for a while that fits surprisingly well in the factory airbox. Sounded cool when you'd start the car and could hear the blow off and turbo some but it got annoying during everyday driving on the road after awhile so I went back to the OEM Motorcraft. I'd like to post a note to folks who like to say "I've used such and such oil 20 years ago in my high performance hot rod toaster, and it worked the best hands down. Not that I tried any other oil, but it was definitely the best!" Oil formulations change fairly significantly over time, even if the branding doesn't. We are now at API SP and ILSAC GF-6 standard with modern oils. The standard in 2000 was SJ, which had significantly different requirements for viscosity, additives and detergents than SP. Base oils have also changed slightly in that timeframe. The reason this testing is useful is because the 3 year old youtube videos doing a similar thing, are now obsolete. SN, which was current pre-2020 and SP have a fairly large difference in requirements. There isn't much for the halfway SN plus and SP though. As a service advisor, I would regularly run into conversations of motor oil brand bias, using examples from the early 1980s. To which I would simply ignore the other party, or just stare blankly. Old men come in two flavors: Those that know a whole lot, and those that think they know a whole lot. Don't be the second old man.

I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum after Project Farm's test. The 5qt (1.25gal) was on Amz in 2020, for $21.99, free shipping. Bought two. Should have bought more as this was likely a seller typo, and FBA. Now the same 1.25 gal product (5W-30), is $64.99 from that same seller. And good luck finding this oil locally. Wally World doesn't sell it. Advance, and AutoZone don't carry it either. Good video.

I use PUP 5w30 in my 18 Subaru WRX wrx with great results. Have since the car was new on its very first oil change. Now at 102k miles. I used to buy it locally special ordered for like 75 bucks and i think that was for 6 quarts until i started to use amazon. The thing with amazon is the prices on that oil change drastically from time to time. Sometimes its $50 sometimes its 60 and sometimes its 65 for a 3 pack of 5 quart bottles. I just ordered some at the last price. You have to find it when its down and stock up then. Been doing this since about 2019. Keep an open eye and be willing to spend the $ when available at the lower prices.

On the subject of sending stuff out to labs... Do you have any thoughts on sending injectors out to have them professionally cleaned and tested before/after? Would your answer change if the vehicle in question was from a municipal fleet that might be getting lowest-bid gasoline that might lack cleaners/additives? Sent out some injectors once from a 15-year-old CVPI with 120,000 miles and when they came back after cleaning/testing the car seemed a lot more responsive. Wasn't all that expensive, either.

Rich, did you do a flush after or add anything in the crankcase between oil runs? Copper is likely carryover or from your fumoto drain valve when you sweep it open. Sodium can be an additive or coolant. Total Base Number and Total Acid Number are two to watch for longer OCIs. Overall, the oil looks good and the engine is wearing nicely.

I had the same oil tests on my 2012 wrangler after a couple years of extended oil changes and the results were good. I tore apart an 05 5.3 with 250 sum odd miles due to a cracked head that had run conventional Penzoil straight 30w and it was clean with no signs of wear. I did suggest getting away from the straight weight and run the recommended weight. I suggested Penzoil platinum being its of high quality and her husband is a Penzoil guy. @K.Kelly87 2 года назад
@@FordBossMe Ok. Everyone has an opinion. Like I said, I enjoy your content. I understand my car is a bit different. The reason I only use Mann oil filters is because I have tried several other cartridge type filters. My little 2.5L 5cyl tends to have pretty high oil pressure. I do not have a gauge, but the oil filters branded other than Mann, tend to get sucked into an hourglass shape in about 2500 miles. The Mann does not in 5000 miles. My oil comes out in 5000 miles a bit browner than the honey color it goes in, but is still transparent enough to see the cross hatching on the dipstick. I think the Mann does a great job. At 228,500 miles, I needed to have the valve cover replaced due to the PCV leaking. I got to see the top of the engine under the valve cover, and it looked clean from carbon buildup or any sludge. Being consistent in when testing oils and filters is, in my opinion, very necessary. If you are testing oils, using the same filters and intervals, will yield a true test of the different oils. When testing filters, using the same oil and intervals, will truly test the different filters. That is just common sense and logical. . Since testing the different oils is important to you or me, it's never a "waste of time" to do due diligence on being consistent.

Pursuant to a 1990’s law suit between Castrol and Mobil 1, courts ruled that group 3 and 4 base oils are synthetic, therefore any oil that contains one or both of those groups, regardless of proportions, can be called synthetic. So as long as Amsoil contains group 3, even if it’s 100% group 3, they can legally call it 100% synthetic. Thus, 100% synthetic and full synthetic are synonymous. Amsoil admitted this in one of their own blogs.

Group three isn't classified 100%

@@FordBossMe “Castrol won the lawsuit and, since then, the industry has defined Group III base oils as, indeed, synthetic. That means, according to accepted industry definitions and practices, an oil is “synthetic” and may be labeled as such provided it uses only Group III, Group IV or Group V base oils in any combination or ratio. The oil could use 90% Group IV and 10% Group III base oil; or, it could use 90% Group III and 10% Group IV base oils. As long as it only uses Groups III, IV or V base oils, it’s a synthetic oil. That being the case, the terms “100% synthetic” and “full synthetic” describe the same thing. They’re synonymous, and an oil marketer can use whichever it prefers provided the oil in the bottle meets the industry description of “synthetic” outlined above.”

Do you think switching back and forth a high mileage oil additive to pennzoil ultra will be detrimental to the seal and cause a leak? I've been running mobil 1 high mileage for years. Heard it's better to just stick with it than switch. Any truth to that?

I put a purolator boss on my Honda accord. With such a high mileage protection at 20k I try to change oil at every 5-6k miles. Could you technically reuse the filter or just pay the $12 for new oil filter?

Hard to say but I've been using Mobile 1 synthetic since 96k when I bought the car and now at 233k. The car runs perfect. I change it every 7500 or so. I do check it and from what I can tell the oil feels smooth and like it's got plenty of viscosity. Just from touch tho. I think I could go longer but it's probably not worth it to risk that. I suppose any good synthetic would do the same. My CVPI has the 3.27 diff BTW and there are plenty of highway miles on it.

Rich what's your personal opinion on KN Engine oil filters? A mechanic once told me that he didn't recommend KN engine air filter but the KN engine oil filters were OK. I dislike the fact that KN does not disclose their micron rating on thier oil filters. I called KN about a year ago and ask them about thier engine oil filter micron rating and KN told me they don't disclose that information 🤔. Maybe cause they know the micron rating horrible??
