Hello Fellow Carhaulics, & Boss Man Fans, Friends 😊: Thank you Rich for another scientific & educational oil video on Mobil 1. Well Rich you did it again with your data on the Mobil 1 synthetic oils. When I was getting started in car repairs I was under the illusion that Mobi 1 was the best synthetic oil available. Well based on your extensive data & research you definitely opened my eyes & converted me towards Valvoline & Penzoil. Thank you sir, God Bless, & my best wishes to you and your family, TMP from N.J.
I've been using Mobil 1 oils in my vehicles (Honda,Ford,Mazda,Toyota) for over 30 years & not one of the engines have ever needed internal repairs. Mobil 1 oils flow easier than any others in extremely cold temperatures which is when most engine wear occurs.
I have been running Mobil1 exclusively since I purchased my car new end of 2016(2017 model). I do all my oil changes starting at 1k miles using semi synthetic Mobil 1. Then again @ 3k miles. Then again @ 10k miles. From 10k miles onwards I have used Mobil1 extended performance 5-w 30 full synthetic. I had been driving 48 miles each way to work from day 1 in this car. A 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer 2.4l motor N/A. For years I made that commute M-F and many Saturdays too. Then driving all over on weekends. I bought car w\80 miles new. I now have 169k miles on my car. I went up to 20k miles a few times between oil changes and had to add just over 1 qt of fresh oil as that's what burned off. I have ZERO OIL LEAKS. Car does not smoke at all on start-up or when going WOT. I am starting to get a little drivetrain rattle in winter cold starts that goes away relatively quickly before temp gauge moves at all. I use Mobil1 extended performance 5-30 exclusively and Frame XG oil filters. Tried Mobil1 and was really small so I didn't like them. I always warm my engine up before driving away.
I’ve mostly been a Valvoline customer my whole life. Your videos has gotten me to try royal purple and ultra platinum. But I still seem to like Valvoline the best. I really enjoy these videos and the info that comes with them. My standard oil change has been purolator boss filters and full synthetic maxlife from Valvoline. Looks like it’s staying that way.
I agree Valvoline is great oil. For some reason my Honda likes to eat it though not tons and tons, but the dipstick is down a few marks at the 3000 miles point. I haven't used Valvoline in about 4 years. I'm thinking the newest version of the Valvoline Advance and extended might yield better results in my car seeing how the additive packs are badass. I use the Castrol because my car don't like to eat it (only reason I use it) I would use Pennzoil Ultra platinum, but I don't like ordering it. I like that easy to find on the shelf stuff. Wish Rich could test an older bottle of Valvoline full synthetic. I swear the stuff from like 3-4 years ago was kind of wimpy.
I switched from mobil one to valvoline high mileage a few years ago in my v10 super turd and never looked back. It just felt smoother and it wouldn’t smoke after a long idle time
For a long time Mobil1 has been like water. I used to run redline pretty religiously and damn I put Mobil1 in because it was convenient and thought to myself geez this stuff pours like cooking oil😂 This was before they diversified into the different levels of protection.
These Mobile test results are interesting. When I had my VW Passat the first 2 oil changes were free from the dealer. The dealer used VW 508 spec Mobile oil. In between oil changes my car burned at least 1 quart, sometimes more. By the third oil change I did it myself and used VW 508 spec Liqui Moly. The oil burning stopped, or at most was not noticeable.
If they were using mobil 1 0w-40 euro spec that’s actually bad for direct injection engine because it contains large amounts of calcium which causes pre ignition in di engines I heard that from vw engineering here at the dealership but just so you know mobil 1 sold everywhere outside of the usa is a true 100% pao synthetic they change the formula after they lost a court case against Castrol oil.
Thanks for a great video and your perspective on motor oil. I just bought a 2024 Ford F150 Raptor and I just want to make sure I'm using the best possible motor oil when it's due for an oil change. Based on your recommendation, I think I'll be using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum here in Texas. Much appreciated!!
My friend and I were going to Dee's family restaurant today for breakfast.when I found a wallet by there front doors,I gave it to the cashier and the person that lost it was about to leave.when the cashier gave him his wallet back.yes he was very thankful.that is my good deal of the day.keep up with the grate oil n filter updates.
Great video. I have not done one test on oil. The trick is simply maintenance and the correct weight of a detergent oil. I will prove it to me by simply changing ford synthetic blend 5-20W and placing it into a 2004 Honda Civic 1.7l with 223k miles on it after 3k miles on the oil. After the newness of some vehicle you buy wears out it's only maintenance from there. FBM take care. Summer is close.
LOL…. When you started smiling earlier in the vid, I knew you were going to say Mobil One ain’t that great. I’m putting the recommended Valvoline oil BY THE BOSS in my my vehicles because you took the time to have it checked out. Thank you so much BOSS for what you do for us. You made my day. When you look at my post from your latest vid on Vavoline oil you will see were I’m coming from. Stay Blessed!
Great analysis, and thank you for sharing this valuable information about the Mobile One truck and SUV formula. Your thorough and data-driven review really helps consumers make informed decisions when choosing motor oil. I appreciate your honesty and your dedication to providing unbiased insights. It's clear that your priority is to help people take good care of their vehicles, and that's highly commendable. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more of your informative videos!
I really like amsoil. Only complaint is I have to order it online. There isn’t a dealer close to me. I will for sure keep the valvoline extended protection in my back pocket for when I’m in a pinch. I just dropped my truck off for the trans service. I did it early at the 44k mileage like you recommended! Thanks
Thanks for running the test, it is always interesting to see the results. I honestly think they should start to have requirements to show what they are putting in all auto fluids, similar to how the FDA requires food labels because people should have the right to know what they are putting into the second most expensive asset they will every own. I know it would get tied up in all the lawyer stuff because they would claim it is "proprietary", but I would like to bet that if brands started to advertise this on their own instead of the BS marketing schemes they do now they would increase sales. I have worked in the corporate world for awhile now and consumers love transparency. Gimmicks and marketing schemes only go so far until customers wise up, and find out that they are being sold half truths. It ruins customers relationships for years. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the high end brands like Redline and Amsoil start doing this in the future. They have already started by hiring independent third parties and posting test results online.
Thanks Rich for another very educational lesson about motor oils . The knowledge that you give to all us is priceless, and I love the way you explain the facts to us also priceless.I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend .bodymanbob from Alabama .
I bought a 2007 Honda Civic in January 1st the first 3000 mills I switch to Mobil 1 ful synthetic 10w30 I had no oil related filia I had no engine filia the car has 319,000 miles on it change my oil filter every 5,000 miles
Mobile 1 is decent. I used to buy it from Walmart like 10-15 years ago. Cold flow was good, made my engine a little noiser... which I think was because it was thinner than other 5w-30 oils. The lower Flashpoint of 410 is a bit of a concern with GDI engines, but these numbers only tell a part of the story. Bore scoping a modern engine after 30k might prove more. Any chance you can see if any of the brand loyal customers with similar models would be up to participate?
Thank you for the details on the engine oil analysis Rich! My go to oil is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, I do like to use Mobil 1 Truck/SUV in the winter in my Sierra Denali, and Yukon Denali. The V6 in the GMC Terrain which my spouse drives also does well with Mobil 1 Truck/SUV during the colder months. I was surprised to see the little difference in the results, especially Zinc levels etc. between the Mobil 1 Truck/SUV and the Extended Performance, I’m assuming both tested were the Triple Action Formula….? Again, much appreciated you having the engine oil testing done Rich, looks like I’ll be primarily running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability, have a relaxing Sunday, take care, cheers!
I don’t use M1, but it’s still good oil. They use really good base oils and rely on it. Too many of certain additives cause more sludge and issues for direct fuel injection. Also, if you have a timing chain, you don’t want too many additives. They get chopped up like a blender and break the oil down faster. Keep it simple and using good fuel to cut down on fuel dilution in the oil is the way to go. If it passes the Dextos 1 requirements, it’s a good oil. All M1 run a lil thin. I wanted to try their 5w40 because it’s on the thin side of it and it has a lot of miles. Just thinking it might keep the compression better, but my car doesn’t need Euro packaging.
I don't use Mobil 1 ....but I will say I've seen many cars that went 300k plus using it..the big complaint I hear about this oil is its ability to burn off between oil changes...my uncle had a Nissan truck from the mid 80s that went 400k on mobil 1.... not sure how much the formula has changed since then though ..
Anyone else ever notice a loss in oil pressure near the end of the service interval with the valvoline? We couldn’t get the bulk oil we normally used during the pandemic nonsense so we tried whatever the basic synthetic valvoline sold at Walmart is, and at 5k miles we’d be down 15 pounds of oil pressure when hot. Change the oil with the exact same stuff and the oil pressure would be back to normal when hot. Went back to what we were using before and no drop in pressure
Just picked up a 5-quart jug of Valvoline Extended Performance High milage with an extra quart for top off if needed, With the Fram Synthetic Endurance filter Rated for 25k for the next oil change. Going to do lab testing on it every 5k or so and see what it can do. It has a crazy good additive pack and TBN so i feel like it should last with a 10k OCI fairly easy. The 4.6l dosn't seem like a dirty engine at all.
I will never run any oil for 10k miles....And especially the oil filter that long.... Yes, it may not cause a problem ...then.... Just wait until later.....
@Fran Danco Honestly I've been on both sides. Modern oil is good enough and if your engine Burns clean enough. I think you could do 10,000 mile intervals if you have the right driving style, For instance, very little idle time and all highway driving. Basically no stop and almost no city which is what my commute consists of. Another thing is this vehicle is 27 years old nothing is under warranty, By the time an extended drain interval causes issues, It's going to be time to get another vehicle for other reasons. I've seen people run in factory drain entervals of 10000 miles or more for the life of their new vehicle and haven't had any issues, no oil Consumption or very little oil consumption and the engine still looks good inside, If the oil is not worn out and has plenty of Additive package and TBN and left. In theory, there should be no real damage besides maybe needing an engine flush every once in a while for good measure.
@cookieboy7102 the xg2 filters are some of the best on the market. Your missing out with that old ass stigma.. Cut one open and find out for yourself. Fordboss already cut most of em open in a video.
I saw Circle K has their own oil. It's by Pinnacle out of Indianapolis. It's expensive though, 8.99 a quart but i suppose you're paying for the convenience.
Where are the marketing teams or engineers for these brands to help explain their oils to provide some context to their oil makeup? You have your core audience right here, clamoring for more information and it would cost you $0. It could go a long way in building your core audience and establishing a good rapport. Rich is a great guy who is open to hearing all sides. It would be great for these brands to speak to him and walk through their oil, why it contains the additive package it does, explain what those additives do, and answers questions people have about their oil.
So there's somebody in the comment section already that's giving information if you guys would take some time sometimes to go ahead and look at the comment section before like making assumptions or claims or asking specific questions that are already answered you would see that the answer is already there
No I'm not saying that directly to you at any means I love you to death don't get me wrong but I'm just saying more people need to look at the comment section because somebody has already explained that actually knows how the stuff is made and I pinned part of his comment to the top of the comment section
So far I'm hooked on the Castrol GTX full synthetic (silver bottle) It claims 6 x better wear protection and 1.3 x better sludge cleaning. Castrol claims it has the intelligent molecules like the magnetic. They don't market it having intelligent molecules, but they claim it's in it. Hope Rich eventually tries out the Castrol GTX (silver bottle)
@@FordBossMe Agree sludge is there to stay once it is there. If you don't want sludge then like you say Do 5,000 mile or less ol changed and prevent the sludge from ever happening
@@toenails. 4200 miles is the most miles I have went on an oil change. I usually change it around 3500 to 4000. When I got the car new I would change her every 3000 miles or less. A spoiling I give her.
THANKS for what you are doing. Looks like to me correct me if I am wrong but OREILY FULL Synthetic is better than Mobil One and cheaper. I would like to see how STP FULL Synthetic and high mileage stacks up against VALVOLINE and MOBIL ONE .
I’m currently running Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 in my Grand Marquis. So far, I haven’t had any issues with it, and from what I read, it seems to be better than normal M1 EP according to the VOA’s I saw. Next oil change, I am most likely going to go back to Valvoline oil.
I’m gonna Try Triax they seem to be good and I like the basestocks they using for there motor oils. And they price around the same as the major brands .
For years one my diesels I used Chevron Delo 400 15-40w , at my work in Locomotives it was the best oil sent away and analyzed. Also, I once saw Teflon used in oil , I’m wondering where that went ?
To NOT be a fan of Mobil 1 and stating that their oils are weak are two totally different things. The fact that you don't know what makes this oil an excellent choice and only judging the overall package based on add pack is beyond misleading
Good info, I had not used valoline in some time but agree am not impressed with M1. Pennzoil platinum is much quieter compared to M1 at least in my car. Also get a charge out of those whom used a brand of oil and make statements like my car loves it lol
Alright Rich next oil change will be Valvoline. My 2013 F150 5.0 has 173K miles w/ 5w20 Mobile 1 every 5K miles. I have had the cold start rattle for as long as I can remember (Ford dealer told me it was normal a long time ago.) With the costs of the new ones and kids in college I need this truck to last. Suggestions? Otherwise it's a solid truck.
The Amzoil company is in my hometown so I naturally lean their way. I have a new 2023 Explorer Timberline 2.3 L eco boost. Im planning on running Amzoil XL 5w30 what are your thought's. Thanks so much.
Again, it’s nice to know what’s in an oil, but can we plz see testing on these oils under operational temps? And also wear testing, lubricity, evaporation etc? That will tell the true story.
You should make videos for 0-20. My personal experience with mobile 1 . After 3k miles engine is dead smooth to less smoth in my camry, still smooth. Now switching to plantinum high mileage. I hope it works better. I change my oil at 4k-4.5k with mobile 1 exten high
What are your thoughts on Fram Motor Oils I noticed it used to be the Carquest brand but they switched the branding to Fram according to my local car quest store manager
@Ford Boss Me I used to use Pennzoil when working at NTB. But that was free and a while back. I'll look into Valvoline and others. Thanks for your you opinion.🙏🏾💯
Hello bud… hope your heathy and feeling good. I’ve been following you for some time now. Wanted to ask you if able what do you think about the Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic oil? And in sight would be greatly appreciated.
I was always using Mobil 1. Never was a fan boy. I thought oil was just oil... I didn't know about additives in it compared to other brands.. it was always on sale or Sam's club carried it in bulk at a reasonable price. This last oil change the Mobil oil had 2,865 miles, 10 months from the last oil change (with 2 quarts added wirhin that 10 months). Living 2 minutes from work and making very few long trips, II was never giving the oil time to warm up and do it's oily duties. My motor has 242k miles .. I finally realized after looking at your reports, that due to my lack of driving and short trips, especially a high mileage vehicle, that it'd be in my best interest to switch to something better. I have the 4.6 V8 Triton motor. I have always noticed as Mobil 1 gets about 2k on it, the engine runs rough, I'd get clatter with cold starts in the morning. I've switched to Penzoil Platinum Ultra, I have about 500 miles on it, but I have noticed a significant difference across the board (that may be with any oil change regardless of brand who knows) There is certainly a pep in the ol' girls step. Send me your email Rich, and I'll show you the numbers from this recent oil change (I'll try and get it sent out to Blackstone tomorrow)
A small update: I did an oil change on my mom's dodge dart, filled with pennzoil platinum high mileage and if that ain't proof it's good oil then I don't know what is. The test drive showed results of a lot smoother drive, less noise, and overall just a sense of good vibes.
Hey rich what would you recommend i would like your opinion, got new 2023 toyota tacoma, dropped factory fill about 1100 miles on clock, bought toyota oil since i was passing by the dealership, now trying to decide on what brand of oil to go with valvoline ep or advance 0w20, or pennzoil ultra platinum? Im going to be doing my own oil changes with 5k interval. Thanks in advance. Btw love the content you put out for us.
Mobil 1 was originally made from acetylene gas (C2H2). But I heard rumors that they went back to refining crude oil. Another oil now claims to be made from natural gas (CH4). Anyone know what Mobil is doing now?
Okay I’ll try something other than Mobil 1. I have a f150 powerboost the truck constantly cranks the engine on and off because of the hybrid. I got 7500 miles on it. Been running Mobil 1 ep with their filter. Penzoil platinum or valvoline advanced right now pick, what filter as well?
Hey Rich I agree with you about Mobil 1 being overrated and far from the best. I wonder if Mobil 1 European formulas are good for European oils? If I had a car that took European stuff I might consider Mobil 1. The stuff for the American vehicles is wimpy ass oil.
I just ordered some 0w16 from Toyota so I can test it I hear it's got like 680 parts per million Molly like one of the highest I've ever seen in my life
I don't know if you will respond, but I am looking to purchase a 2016 lincoln mkc 2.3. Would you recommend it? Be honest, are they reliable for a college kid? Is maintenance expensive or am I better off with a honda?
What is your professional opinion on Amsoil products as a whole? I have a cousin who owns a European performance shop and he swears by it. He has a mid 80’s Audi that he uses for a back up/test vehicle and claims to have put 30000 on a single oil change ( not sure of what specific formula or weight) then sent a sample off to a independent testing lab and they told him while it’s recommended he change the oil due to the mileage they not find anything major issues and could theoretically keep running it. I myself only have personal experience using their 20w50 V twin oil in my Harley and the 20w50 Z Rod in my 77 Corvettes 383 stroker with a flat tappet cam. Thanks
@@FordBossMe I’ve got another quick question if you don’t mind. I’m getting ready to change my transmission filter and fluid and was wondering if it would be alright to run Valvoline maxlife multi vehicle ATF in my 2001 F150 4x4 with the 4R70W? I’ve gotten conflicting information from people as some say only use Mercon 5 while others have said the multi vehicle would be fine. Thanks
Mobile fan boys😂 I've had great experience with PENNZOIL every time. Can't say the same about valvoline not cause you're wrong but I just haven't had the experience with it.
I'll be honest tho now that I'm using pennzoil platinum synthetic I can see oil seeping out the outside of head gasket thought about switching back to conventional your thoughts?
@@FordBossMe does that necessarily mean the head gasket is going out? Or no way to tell just do a leak down test? I have seen a tiny bit of smoke on start a couple times but not often
@@steverugerguy9606 8.7 on PQIA is what I saw for M1, but that is because of ASTM D2896 testing PQIA uses. Blackstone Labs always uses D4739 for TBN, so compare apples to apples of Blackstone tests, and Pennzoil and Valvoline are comfortably into the 6's and 7's with the same D4739 testing which underrates TBN...
I have a 1998 Saturn with over 150,000 miles on it. Does not consume alot of oil, just a dab now and then. Ford Boss Me what would be your pick in a 5w 30 oil in this car ?
Edge 20,000 Mi formula is it's decent not crazy high and additive but it's really good and the old casserole GTX magnetic I tried it was okay I need to try the new one the silver bottle
I should do a lot of things but I only have enough time in one day to do certain thanks and if you send me the oil and I'll do it but I'm limited on my time
