Mobile automotive diagnostics and repair. Is it a good business? My setup. J2534 programming

Here is a video I was asked to make. It's totally me rambling and showing what I use on a daily basis to repair, program and diagnose automotive electrical and mechanical problems. Don't by tools you don't need . I'm taking a little bit of my time to show you the basic tools you will need to get started without overspending. Feel free to disagree or give me your opinion on how you handle your business. This works for me and hopefully it will help you understand the need and profit involved in a very unknown or confusing business .

Hi Jack. I am so happy I found you on youtube, please don't stop what you are doing. Really good setup you have. I am Krisz and I was a graphic designer for 20 years and I had enough of the rat race and London. I was always good with computers and coding, I have always fixed my cars and I always dreamt that one day I will start my own automotive diagnostic and electrical repair company. Finally, this year, I did, it is hard, but I have to say that it is slowly picking up. I have all the tools for electrical jobs, cutters, testers,, multimeters, power sources, you name it. I am pretty good at the electrical stuff, most of the jobs are related to lights, audio systems, airbags, modules replacing, clusters, o2 sensors, engine sensors, anything really. I have also purchased the Autel ms906, but I only saw your review after I had the tool. Absolutely amazing tool, I am very impressed after Snap-On and other oriental brands. I am now a bit sorry I didn't go for the elite version as I would have liked the J2534 coding tool. I also have all the BMW coding tools and cables, and I am looking to get some sort of pass trough to be able to code or replace ECU's. I know the Mastertech is amazing but is also bloody expensive. I have found the JDiag Elite II pro J2534 on ebay at a reasonable price and I was thinking to ask you what is your opinion on these, or what would you buy to use for ECU coding excluding the Mastertech. Also, as a separate note, I would really like to see what you do, to clean crash-data from an airbag module. I am only replacing them with new ones, but I think there is good business in fixing these. Really sorry for the long comment, and the questions but I would really like to learn more from you.

This was extremely helpful for me learning some j2534 knowledge among other bits of information, you seem very humble and knowledgeable in the trade. I would love some more info on how you have that tough book set up. Looking for something similar set up in my shop. You have helped a bunch of people with this video from blowing money on unnecessary equipment. Simple and efficient, love it! What a wealth of knowledge in such a short video.

I, for one , am very impressed. I want to do this but my electrical diagnostic ability starts and stops with if a lightbulb doesn't light, unscrew said lightbulb, shake it next to my ear and if I hear a jingle, lightbulb bad. I want to know to where you would tell some one who wants to emulate you to start. This video answered the big bullet point questions I have in deciding to jump in. Money-What is needed- areas of focus/niches and potential growth. Excellent work my man. I can't wait for more in depth videos from you, How To's, Tool reviews, laptop set ups, start to finish cluster repairs. You have a huge future here on RU-vid my friend. Thank you for this.

Excellent info, thanks for sharing this. I do this work at a dealership, most of the guys don't want to be bothered with it, but I really enjoy the electrical challenge. I'd like to see how you setup your Toughbook with the different partions. I picked up a Bosch Mastertech from a friend brand new in a case, and when I went to setup my Toughbook I had to call Bosch as I didn't have access to one of the setup emails. I explained I bought it used from a friend and they sent me the setup info and walked me through it no problem.

Toyota Ron that's the best part. When the senior techs tell them to have you do it. I love when they call me after everyone else has givin up. I sort it out in minutes and look like a hero. Lol. It's a good feeling and I too love the challenge.

Have you ever had an airbag go off on you? I've done probably a hundred or more inflators (Takada's), clocksprings, control modules etc and never had a problem. But, my buddy was telling me about a guy who was working on either a Honda or Subaru that came from a body shop and they told this guy they put new frontal crash sensors in (the car was put back together). His job was to put the new control module and airbags in. Well, they hadn't replaced the front crash sensors and when he replaced everything and turned on the key they all lit off and blew him out of the car. I guess he got hurt pretty bad.
@jackmeyers2911
@jackmeyers2911 6 лет назад
Toyota Ron I doubt that the front sensor is what set them off on him. The srs control module takes many factors into consideration before deployment. Speed , rate of deceleration, braking distance all in milliseconds. If the vehicle was sitting still it was probably a faulty yaw rate sensor that caused your buddies deployment. Same thing happened to me on a 2014 Tacoma. Yaw rate sensor is In the actual control module on those trucks. I replaced the drivers bag and seatbelt, clock spring, the front sensors and control module. Scanned the truck and all was good. I got out , was standing right outside the truck. I put my head down by the brake, gas pedal to pick up my tools and every bag in the truck went off. Both side curtains, drivers , passengers and all pretensioners. I literally couldn't hear for 15 minutes and thank God I was low enough while reaching down the drivers bag and side curtain hit me square on the back and just pushed me down on the seat. I had never been in a vehicle Collison with a deployment and was blown away by the force of the bags and just the sound alone was deafening . Hundreds and hundreds of systems ive installed and only once ever had something like that happen. Turned out the control module had a shorted yaw rate arming circuit that sent a positive roll over signal to fire the bags. Yaw rate is the only sensor on most vehicles that doesn't take vehicle speed and decrleration rate into the deployment calculation. You can be at a dead stop and if the truck or car thinks it's tipping over it will fire everything. Scary day thst was for me. Not to mention my eyes were burning for about 12 hours.

A mobile company that does this wants $500 to reprogram my Saturn ls2 bcm. I've lost some options on it. Intermittent wiper control, defoggers, door locks (inside). My thought is the control module. All the parts and wiring has been checked and everything is fine. It's going to another shop with a tech 2 to try and reprogram it. I passed on the 500 dollar one. Outrageous ! Great video, that's a fantastic set-up. Wish I knew how that worked.

Wish I had the balls to become self employed. Screw all the trolls.

That's awesome. I used to deal with a lot of the same stuff. I used to work on automated equipment for a factory that built Toyota parts. Ladder logic. Steppers, rotory encoders etc. I loved it but Toyota moved their norcal plant to Mexico and we all were let go. That plant is now Tesla. Little off topic but since I've done it I know how fascinating it is. Do it. Post your videos! It is time consuming. I have about a year's worth I need to edit and upload. I've also considered making a second channel. I've been hard core into pcb design the last couple years. I have ideas i needed to turn into working prototypes and got tired of subbing out the board design. I've got it down now and there aren't many good videos here on RU-vid. If you're good at something share it. People will watch.

excellent! I'm under the impression that the im100 has its own software built into it to read and write eeprom data, correct? so I won't be needing programs like carprog on my pc??
@jackmeyers2911
@jackmeyers2911 6 лет назад
Bloody knuckles Automotive correct. It is limited on the chips it will read as of now. There are the most poplar. I'll do a read video with both on the same chip. I do like to use other cheap chip readers like the 4x4 because you can read almost any chip and double check the checksums to ensure the read isn't corrupted. I honestly has ever used that function on the im100 but I'm sure as soon as I do I will love it. I don't have a real carprog but the clone lets me into the software which on a large majority of vehicles slows you exactly what chip on the board you're after. Some mcu info on how to read and directly connect to some of them without removal.
@bloodyknucklesautomotive7126
@bloodyknucklesautomotive7126 6 лет назад
I do have access to the carprog software so I might download it just to check it out. I'm just starting to get me feet wet and branch out into the module repair industry because there is a demand for it in my area with no one doing it and just want to make sure I have all the correct tools to start learning properly and efficiently! Thanks again!

Hello Jack, Good Job you have done with this video. Your ever willingness to educate, enlighten and share your experience in the diagnostic field is awesome and commendable. I particularly admire your OEM set-up on the Panasonic Toughbook. The best I have done is to have BMW ISTA D & P (Native Instal), Ford IDS (VMware) & Jaguar Land Rover SDD (VMware) on one DELL Laptop with each OEM having its specific VCI cable. How were you able to get all those partitions with over 10 different OEMs ? ....and most of all it seems you use only the Bosch Mastertech VCI as the only Interface for both diagnostics and programming of all the OEM Brands on that one computer. Your leads and explanations will be highly appreciated. Many thanks !

wouldn't worry about the hate mail am in the trade myself here in NZ some 18 years now and i do what I do (A) because i enjoy it and (B) because it earns a good living " at times yes it can be challenging finding the right balance of work versus family time especially if you have kids but as you grow you have to make sure your hours a regular and your client base know when your on board and when you are not as far as the tool collection goes ! it's easy to overspend when your starting out and most often you do " I believe this is because you have yet to acquire experience and knowledge which both come with time in the field once you have spent a bit of time you soon realise you have tools you could do without or find yourself wishing you had saved the money ! all part of the deal. Anyway great video " final thought is if your enjoying your work screw the haters they aint paying your bills 'you are jack

Excellent Video to show an overall setup for covering the things you do. I am surprised you got the IM100, and not the IM600, in order to get the wireless/JPassthru, even though your already have the Bosch. Is there a deficiency on the 600's Passthrough that made you not go that route? As a locksmith since forever, still tons to learn as new stuff is introduced, or existing devices start aging out, and failing because they have hit end-of-life. Again, thumbs up! Only downside, is the FIXT commercial one has to endure that is commercial posing as a product review. UGH

Flatdog Sound & Light .the autel will get you to the problem but if it's in the key it isn't going to help you there. Mb key tools are very expensive.

Jack Meyers hi I got the same problem with both keys, I am thinking it's the ignition switch if I can say it like that, I did look at the MB tool C3 /C4/C5 from china but don't have a lot of faith and it will be good only on MB , my main thing is to diagnose the problem after find the way to fix it thanks

RON COELHO working on that partition video now. I don't think the autel will do it. It might. I'll check the function viewer but if there is a weak point to the autel is Mercedes. Some models it's awesome and some it won't do much. I'll let you know asap

Great work, very helpful information, I'm rebuilding a couple Buick Park Avenue's, you mention you have different parts, I'm trying to find a couple 2005 buick park avenue eeproms for the odometer mileage correction I have. What do you think about the DG VSI j2534? I cant seem to find the Bosch vci at the moment on eBay
@jackmeyers2911
@jackmeyers2911 6 лет назад
Jus Benzz I'm not too sure about the dg. It seems to be a j2534 and software combo. That's how bosch first marketed the mastertech but the price they charged for the oem specific software killed that for them. I don't see the dg on many oe approval lists. Doesn't mean it won't work well but you won't get the free tech support that comes with an oe approved interface. Honestly for the same price on eBay you can get a snap on pass thru pro 2 used. It was actually contracted thru drew technologies and is the exact same tool as a cardaq with a snap on sticker on it. It's oem approved for just about everyone as well. You can also look for the Bosch flasher pro. Again exact same tool as cardaq and pass thru pro 2 just green with different color. The only one I can tell you from experience to stay away from is the launch jbox. It too is a drew design but and is identical in appearance but it is junk. I called drew technologies about the one I used to have . It kept dropping mid flash and they told me that even though it was their design and ran on their firmware launch had it assembled by another company in china and that they wouldn't give any support for it. I couldn't sell it quick enough and that's why I try to push everyone in an oem approved device. In the world of flashing you will run into trouble. No matter how good you are and having someone on the other end of the phone that will help you for free is worth it's weight in gold. So my recommendation is a cardaq , mongoose pro, snap on pass thru pro, mastertech or Bosch flasher pro. That's all I will use.

Great job Thank you. How big is the hard drive on your toughbook?? I would like to partition one of my toughbooks like that.

@jackmeyers2911 6 лет назад
lowridermig i have a 2tb on there with 2 extra operating stems in case i want to add on. You can get away with a 1tb and have plenty of extra space. The price difference these days from a 1tb to 2tb isn't much so I recommend it.

Thanks for the video. Could you comment on the Bosch vs Drewtech pass thru devices? Also, is your tough book partitioned software OEM or China cloned? I've noticed some deals.....

The software i have is a mix. Some genuine some I get from mhh. I have friends all over the industry the help me out on the software and updates but most don't matter. Nissan you just need the download. Kia hyundai and gm the same. Techstream needs updates every so often or it quits. Mhh forum is a good place to start. I prefer bosch to drew but everyone is different. The drew used to have advantages because of the j2534 toolbox. It would let you do minor code reading and chrysler skim, skreem, vin and milage correction as to whe the bosch won't but almost all scanners now do them. Even a used drew or passthru pro will cost you $1000. You can find the mastertech for $450 and it's awesome. The best of both worlds is the bosch flasher pro (made by drew) they sell cheap but don't show up too often. Then you get the j2534 toolbox and bosch software in one package.

Thanks man, I picked up a mint mastertech, but will keep my eye out. I need to spend more time on mhh now....
