Great video Nick, I like the fact that we are getting more and more small HD drones as they fly perfectly for my back yard, which means I can just walk out the back door fly 4 or 5 packs and not take a huge chunk out of my day going to a spot, I hope these smaller drones keep getting developed and just get better and better. this was the video and the first quad that kicked the whole FPV obsession off for me haha....i just wanted to stop back by here to tell you how much i apreciate all your vids and help through the years and helping me discover a new "hobby" that was able to take the place of some pretty nasty addictions that i desperately needed to release. FPV has been an amazing and unique tool in helping me beat addiction and giving me something i could dive into and focus on instead of those nasty habits and channels like yours have been absolutely key to keeping me growing in the hobby and helping me fix all the little bugs and issues. so again, i just wanted to say thank you and cheers for all you do Nick! happy flying!

I love your reviews! Thanks. I've seen Nathan Loopz flights as well and they sure do look great. While I'm interested in HD occasionally, I'm not so sure I'm willing to sacrifice the FPV view. Maybe that will get better in the next revisions of these cameras/boards.

i think it's great that we're starting to get HD footage in "safe" (whoop style) quads that fall well, well under the 250gram threshold. this opens up a ton of opportunities that wouldn't be possible or safe even with the smallest dji (or similar). the NEXT STEP for our micros.... stabilized video.

You can get this flying nicely on 3S and there's more punch/torque. But the CrazyBee F4 is a bit fragile and the increased input voltage on the 5V booster invertor tends to generate too much heat which does make it blow. I'm back on 2S after lots of messing with PIDs and a few blown F4 boards.

Fantastic review, Nick! 😃 About those whoops with HD recording, since NURK FPV showed a "cinewhoop" in his channel, those started to pop up in the market. But his was much bigger, 3" components and it carries a GoPro. Still... I guess those have their place. And it's great to see them. 😃

From what I have seen, i really like this quad. What I'm looking for in a HD quad. Is not necessarily something super fast. Just has to be super smooth and super controllable. It looks like this quad has most of that covered.

Nice review my friend. U are right 2s carbon fiber frame 65mm props are the future. I am currently building up the cremepuff lite and have two nice really nice frames from gnarly fpv on preorder. The versatility and were we are today with 2s is amazing. Also I don't find those gemfans props all that great.

You're very welcome, it's amazing to see how buttery smooth and fast your indoor flying is now it's rendered on RU-vid at the original 60fps :) RU-vid footage will never compare to the source you upload, they really hammer the detail with their low bitrate encoding, which is why sometimes I upload the source encode to my website and link it in the video.

None that I recognized while I was flying. We have the xt30 and I presume its 20awg wire, should be about as good as we can.

i do think hd whoops have a place in fpv especial doing them slow cinematic videos in places the big quads cant go since i started out in this hobby i look at the world different like for instance a bando spot out of the fpv goggles it would look like rubbish to everyone but from the time you put that goggles on and rip that spot with a 5 inch quad or use a cine whoop and make a video with a few edits its like a work of art

I am hesitant to say it can as they are 5amp escs. But then again I was flying some models on 5amp esc with 3inch biblades about 3 years ago. But new props have more pitch and motors have more kv, so its possible, but I can't be sure at this time. sorry.

I would primarily fly in the garden and cruise + I would like something nimble for smaller spaces (doesnt need to be normal living room). And I need to learn LOS and FPV...possibly traverse quickly into rate mode/ acro mode. I built a 280 fpv quad 4 years ago, because it was fun, but I suddenly had no real time for it. I started training on a plasticy garden drone LOS and I want to continue learning in the garden too finally ramp up towards flying the bigger quad I have, but which I am currently a bit scared to fly. :) So, what should I get? One of these carbo fibre models or simply a plastic drone with prop guards. I at least wanted to get rid of the brushed motors as I was quite unlucky the first couple of motors it seems. I didnt crash hard and some even went dead mid flight, but I chewed through 10 brushed motors back in the day and this got expensive at the wrong end. :) What would you suggest. It seems I like the mobula (normal one of the HD?) What is with those diatone drones or the one you reviewed before that? I have skyzone v2 goggles with mushrooms + patch or helicals and a taranis radio. Perhaps the drone should be betaflight to learn to tune stuff and try out different things to also learn some tuning? I dont know, if it currently is a time to wait 1-2 months longer or to get something now? Is there something in the horizon? The tinyhawk gets perhaps a 2s upgrade? Perhaps you can be as versatile with 1s, 2s and perhaps even 3s on this or on some upcoming quads? Perhaps you have a better overview on what is happening. Would appreciate some short comment. I know you get asked all the time.

Hi Nick. To use the old style props you can use a 1.45mm drill bit to take the hole right through, also on the props that are used and a little loose on the shaft I use just a tiny drop of CA in the hole, with the prop upside down push in the motor shaft and allow to dry for a couple of mins keeping the quad upside down so no CA gets in the motor, it has worked well for me so far

Great job Nick and you very thoroughly "burned" through this review. In my opinion, this is the best performing quad in the bunch of HD Whoops that have come out so far. The video is outstanding, reliability appears to be reasonable as not everyone will fly as hard as you and given Happy Model's effort to maintain a good power to weight ratio the flight characteristics won't require much adjustment or limit one's ability to fly normally. *That's a winner in my book.* However, I have one complaint with your poll, perhaps you should have added, "Yes, Power is everything!" as I originally selected, "No, flight time is King!" Which in my mind it *IS* but I didn't want to split the "No" vote. Yeah, I am splitting hairs here, but you created a poll with only one positive and with two negatives; and therefore I felt compelled to say, "No, means NO!" LOL All kidding aside, it's always a pleasure to spend time watching a master at his craft. Take that for what you will and thank you.

great review! somethings i do when a prop is reemed out is use some floss in the hole to tighten it up. just 1-4 lil strips to push against the shaft. also noticed with yaw wash out on the custom lil whoops ive built, battery balance and CG are my main factors that stop it for me

Wonderful review, you sound extra jolly in this one! 😁 This will be my next purchase as it fills a gap for me. I'll fly it 2s because I have a bunch of 2s batts and I don't need the punch. Might need to snip off and create my own battery holder to fit some of my weird shaped Acehe 2s, happy to do that kind of modding. A brief history of Nick's excellent advice for me so far: Nick recommended Airblade Macaron kit. I got one. Loved it. Flew it to bits. Internals part of a backup franken-quad based on a FlexRC Ascent 2" (I think you also said you liked). Nick recommended HGLRC Hornet. I got one. Still love it. Blows my socks off - 2s inside empty office buildings, 3s outside. Going to turn it HD with Caddx Turtle 2. Nick told us the Q90 was too heavy. My friend bought one anyway on a deal. Handled like a brick. I've had good banter mileage out of that for about a year now. Thank you! Thank you for your excellent videos with just the right balance of opinion and information. 👍

Hello, thank you again for your reviews ! Do you know if there is buzzer integrated to the Mobula7 HD please ? I just received mine, there is a kind of music when i plug the battery, but nothing else (i presume the music is from the caddx ?). I have assigned buzzer to a RC switch in betaflight, i see a green led flashing on the Mobula HD when i turn on but no sound... ( i would be a little disapointed if i would have to solder a buzzer, afraid to damaging the mobula...). Thank you

I switched my Turbo Eye lens for a glass 1.66mm race lens with a wider fov. It worked great on an SDR2 Plus Freestyle, I wonder if it would be a good lens option for the turtle cams.. Also, I've heard range is bad with the crazybee f4 boards, was it improved in the V2.0?

I haven't tested range. When I was outside leaning against the garage I found my fpv started to drop out, I didn't get an rssi warnings, but that isn't all that far really.

Nick the biggest problem i have with wash out is 180 degree circle an object with 75 plus degrees of forward pitch at high to full throttle like in a racing situation. Also the wash really comes out in a descending turn like coming from i higher altitude gate then turning 180 to a lower altitude gate. Could you possibly include either those in future reviews?

I do washout the same with the mobula. not really on dives but on sharp turns at high speed.

Sure. I think in this case it might be hard to replicate as the max camera angle is somewhat limited.

I have the 85x, but not HD. I have not flown the one I have yet. We are under snow cover right now. Becareful with the 85x, fires and smoke are being reported pretty heavy. Betafpv created a poll on the topic.

I don't understand the question. the flight video is the stock camera it comes with. There is on the on board recording in "HD" and then the fpv view recorded on the goggles.

I don't know what would be the benefit of flying 3s compared to 2s, especially if you get lower flight times on 3s compared to 2s? I know for me, 2s gets the whoop turning faster and lifting firmer compared to 1s, but it all goes back to the lower flight times, because when I first considered the concept of 2s, my immediate reaction was obviously the 2s over 1s should yield longer flight time, but there should be way to harness the extra power on 3s to reserve more juice to extend flight times compared to flying 2s, and if so, then I think with these whoops flying 3s perhaps getting an extra 60-90 seconds in overall flight time, then I'd be all in favor.....

Will a runcam split mini 2 fit inside that canopy? The mobula7 HD was announced like a week after I purchased my orginal mobula7. I love the thing but since the HD came out I have been wanting HD. I tried to convert my mobula to a whoopeehd frame which was a terrible fail, so I'm going to just put the mobula back together and forget about the whoopeehd. But now I'm left with an runcam split mini 2 with nothing to install it on.

yes it should. Might check the depth of the two from the screw hole to the back of the camera, that need to be almost identical. Keep in mind HappyModel removed the back plate of the turtle cam to decrease weight and create some space.

The HD version doesn't have nearly the performance of the original, but the HD footage is so nice.

When I hear from other reviewers that a particluar micro is hard to fly indoors because its too strong, I go and check right away if Nick Burns already did a flight test for it... "too strong", tell that to Nick Burns.

I can't speak for others, in my experience when the space is more confined it takes more time to train ourselves to fly them well. When we fly outside its much more forgiving.

Hey mate I got the mobula 7hd off custom quads and opened the box I’ve watched your RU-vid on here a few times awsome just quietly, my quad is different to the one you did a review on mine doesn’t have those big bind and boot buttons on the bottom,I dismantled it and there’s two little ones on top of the esc but no marking to say what’s what. Could you show me how to set it up on betaflight and how to set up a model on my radiomaster 16s pls

I wanted to build a Mobula7 hd, but after watching your video I might just buy it. I also have the same problem with props on my Mobula7 where they eject in bad crashes, but I saw the motors on the hd version have what appears to be screwholes on the top. Are there any props that would fit the ducts, that don't hit the camera, and that can be screwed on? That would eliminate the ejection problem that some props have. I also wonder if there is a carbon fiber frame that would fit the Mobula7 hd and all its guts like the one for the Mobula7. Actually it says it can fit 11xx motors so it might be able to handle the hd.

The new gemfan and tbs props both have screw holes, but to fit on the frame the props need to be trimmed a touch. I suspect there is a cf frame out there for it, but I haven't seen one yet. There are a number of "conversion" kits for the mobula 7.

mobula 6 isn't HD, adding the weight of HD to a 65mm 31mm prop is likely a bad choice. With that mobula 7 hd.

Great vid... if I want to rip with the M7 HD what batts would I use? I currently use 2x 300mAh 1S batts in the M7 but want the HD version. Surely using one 300mAh 2S battery would have a very short flight time compared to the lighter M7 (orig) using 2x 300mAh 1S batts (=600mAh 2S or is that only 300mAh 2S "Tricky")? I'm confused as to why anyone would use just 1x 300mAh 2S that's all. I thought you'd be using more like 1x 600mAh 2S? Sorry I'm prob the 1000th to ask. I just want what's going to be the best for blasting outdoors with the HD version. :-)

2x 300mAh 1s batteries I believe would only be equal to a 2s 300mAh battery. Since they are in series on the Mobula7 (both batteries wired together) the amperage stays the same, but the voltages get added together. If they were in parallel(each battery connected to the board seperately) then the amperage would change with the voltage being the same which is the equivalent of a 1s 600mAh battery. You can test this by putting the pigtail 1s adapter in one of the connectors and hooking a 1s battery up and flying it. Without weighing the batteries I think the 1x 2s battery would be a little lighter than 2x 1s batteries, because of using less plastic, and wire, but I don't know how much the xt30 weighs or the jst ph2.0. So the flight time difference might be negligible, but I've also heard the xt30, and xt60 connectors are more efficient. So you might get better flight times by ditching the 1s batteries. The real reason why I'm contemplating changing my batteries from 1s to 2s batteries for my Mobula7 is due to my 1s parallel board being only able to charge 6 batteries at a time, which is 3 flights, whereas I can get a 2s parallel board that can charge 6 2s batteries. So double the flights off of 1 charge is a win win to me.

well the 85x HD has been going up in flames, the product now shows "sold out". I am wondering if there is such a problem they have pulled the product. This make the decision for us at this time.

Hey Nick! You can export HD footage to a higher resolution (2k/1440p seems to be ideal) to bypass some of youtube's compression. Processed results will be much closer to your original footage 👌

are you comparing the audio in my video to the audio recorded in your dvr? My audio is from a stationary camera, I blend the dvr video to the stationary audio.

@@nutsidea Correct, I didn't dampen any sounds there either isn't sound in some of the footage or its from the stationary camera. The onboard mic audio is really hard on the ears. I think its most telling when I fly downstairs the sound goes silent when I am in the unfinished part of the basement.

Oh no it looks like they've invented yet another motor mounting platform. An 110X with the smaller 3 hole pattern 😔. I have wanted to send you one of my things just to see you rip around your house but they're almost all in pieces and being constantly rebuilt for testing. I just got part of the HD carrying prototype and it's actually looking quite good for an AUW of ~85g with a 2S 450mah for a good 3-4min flight while actually moving. Next step is to reconfigure the crazybee to be easier to solder with nice large pads for an Rx because of the awful built in ones. Have you done a review of the HQ props? Gotta look. 3S 'shouldn't' be needed given the low weight and low load on these little things. The small capacity runs out quicker on 3S compared to 2S for a number of reasons. The only value to higher voltage is when you're over pushing the power. That's why racing works out for 6S but acro typically is just as good on 5S and 6S but has more flight time on 5S.

The mounting pattern has to shake out yet. Like when these little 0603 motors first came out. You killing all your prototypes flying among the palms? I have flown the HQ props, but not done a review. Its hard to me to form a definitive opinion on the different 40mm props.

Great review - but I must've missed the part where you weighed it. Was real curious about that since these always seem to come in a few grams heavier than advertised. I agree with your thoughts on 2s. I've been flying FPV for a few years and I've always wanted to do small 2s builds because you can get so much performance in such a small package. Leader 120 convinced me I didn't need a 5" for example!

yea we can do that. We need that dual ph2.0 battery led. Overall the performance will be very similar but slightly less high end performance with 2 ph2.0

Hey Nick, I've somehow not got audio on my Caddx Turtle v2, have you found any way to enable/disable the audio recording? I hope my mic/board/cam aren't just borked, and not producing audio in the recordings

I have not seen that before. I wonder if the wires have come loose or disconnected. I would check the settings first as that would be easier than tearing it down to check the wires.

2s is fine for these, I don't see enough sag to warrant it. Unlike 6s on 5" which has lots of benefits because of high amp draw I don't see the need for 3s on 40mm props. 2 inch and above seems to be about where it's needed. I think the hype train is driven by us, personally. A manufacturer won't rush a product to market unless everyone is talking about it and buying it off the shelves. These 2s whoops are a prime example because the Mobula was super well received and it was hard to keep in stock because everyone was buying one so every one else rushed a model to meet the market. This one looks pretty nice for fun small HD, maybe if I can get it on sale I can convince my wallet to let the money go. 😅 I think there are lots of places I'd love to share HD footage with family and friends but this is the only form factor, family get togethers, bday parties, parks, etc.

That is the motor sound, the board doing the recording has a mic picking up all external sounds.

make sure the props are good, no ripples or otherwise. Make sure the prop height is the same on all props. Check the canopy is secured well and doesn't move around, same for the camera. I believe I posted my pids in the video, you can use those or pids you might find on the happymodel.cn website.
