No it’s about the haircut, pretty sure she violated her contract on the show for refusing the makeover. If the stylist did someone’s hair wrong and the model refuses to let you have it fixed before the shoot, why would you keep working with that model? Also Cassandra got played by Brie lol, she wasn’t giving her “advice” Brie saw an easy opportunity to eliminate competition.

This was awful to Cassandra. They gave her an absolutely awful haircut and dyed her hair a terrible colour and then got mad when she was like “no to more cutting”. And then kept making fun of her and implying she was weak and dumb. What a terrible abusive thing to do to a young lady. I’m glad she stood her ground and left. And she completely found a life outside modelling that suited her better.

Wonder what the models who 'make it' have to go through. You're told you're lazy or hard to work with in many industries, aka you won't put up with their abuse. So wrong. Modelling is maybe one of the worst. You hear how they always have to starve themselves but that's only a part of it. Most say they live in cramped conditions at the start of their career and told they are 'lucky to be working'. Most people now see that's a way to lock people in and have them keep accepting the abuse. They make them feel they have to do that to be successful. It's only when Naomi or Tyra or certain models who are big say what it was really like that people see it is not glamorous. That is why most of them have some kind of issues. It is actually hard because from the agency to photographer etc, you can be abused. Most people seem to be. Tyra herself probably did this and people wouldn't have thought she was because she was a model and it came across as if she was being tough but fair. Hence why people now think she is just as bad as the ones she complained about. Like some people say, Naomi seemed to nurture her models better. Yet Tyra complained that Naomi was the mean one 🤔 She also seems colourist. Look at her partner and child, or ex partner. She probably thought she was better than Naomi

i think the haircut looked good on her cuz she has the facial structure for it, but that doesn't matter. she didn;t want her haircut. not sure why they "had" to change it. heidi klum seemed to have longish hair throughout her career. and models wear wigs too. don't most supermodels have longer hair anyway? cuz there's more to work with. their logic was jsut ridiculous

I hate that they negated the fact she already cut off like 14 inches of her hair and bleached it. Then making it seem like she was just mad about the 1 inch. No, she just doesn't want to give another inch after she already gave a mile. This show, in hindsight, was so much toxicity. Tyra was just working through trauma by bullying all these contestants, there was no real guidance.

I think the scariest part about this is boiling down to consent. Your hair is your hair and you should always have the right to say what is and isn't done to your body. When they kick her out of the competition for not "complying" with something against her consent, it tells the world that your body is not your own, that you are just an object. Ultimately this entire show is like that and it's really damaging.

@@zjjir I understand your perspective here, but you have to keep in mind that for most contestants on the show, this is what they thought was an opportunity to enter the modeling industry, to pursue it as a profession. Most aspiring models are very naive on what the process is like to get signed to an agency, which is how this show was able to stay on air for so many years. I really think most of the models on the show did not fully understand that the producers of the show are there to make entertaining television at the expense of the models.

"She wouldn't take one inch off her hair" uh ma'am you are missing the part where she ALREADY cut like 9 inches off her hair. It's already a drastic change and now you're basically wanting to take off half of what she has left. I don't blame Cassandra for being upset and not wanting to go through with it and I HOPE she chose to leave on her own rather than being bullied out of the competition by production. Personally I'm of the opinion that Hair Grows and even a regrettable haircut decision is going to eventually be able to be fixed, but I also know that not everyone has hair that grows quickly and not everyone is of that same mindset. And for Cassandra, adding in the color change, I wouldn't be surprised if she was still trying to recognize herself in the mirror leading up to this photoshoot. It's one thing to decide on your own to cut your hair short and then be like "oh no" afterwards, it's another thing entirely for someone to just do it to you.

She chose to quit, which I don’t blame her because she’s been eliminated due no photo (see Anna season 2 bodypaint)* so why deal with Tyra’s rant? *(I felt they sabotaged Anna too in season 2 by designing her a body paint that showed more skin than paint. She was conservative and faithful to her husband so the amount of skin showing was not what she wanted, so she went back. Jenascia, who was an hour LATE to the shoot was saved on,y because Anna refused. That said her pain was the most covered up body of all of them.)

But on the other hand before you go on the show ANTM you have to sign a contract and cutting your hair as one of the episodes is definitely included in said contract. It is her body and her choices but a requirement of the show was cutting the hair. She knew it would happen and that she would not have a choice in her haircut, so did all the other models who still participated in the show. Tyra and the crew were incredibly disrespectful however. She probably wouldn't have left if she was given proper respect and autonomy.

This episode brings up a lot of issues about some clients in the modeling industry. Prada is notorious for forcing models to cut their hair in order to do their show, often completely ruining their look and compromising their future earnings. I had to deal with this situation a few seasons ago, and there was a list of brands in Paris saying they would release their options on all models who were cutting their hair for Prada. Givenchy did the same thing this past Menswear season, requiring all models to get buzz cuts. As opposed to a campaign, there is no guarantee a model will ever work for a brand again after doing their show and Prada especially has a habit of booking models as an exclusive just for their debut season and never working with them again. To add another level of pressure, the industry has morphed into a place where a few casting directors are doing several brands. Ashley Brokaw is the casting director for Prada, Raf Simons, Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. DM casting is doing Versace, Louis Vuitton Mens, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, DSquared, Moschino, Jacquemus, and more. There is always the risk of angering one person and losing all those clients at once.

Anyone looking for a little more context: Cassandra said in her application that she would do anything they wanted to change her look, including cutting her hair. Then the makeovers happen, where they decide to cut her long hair. Cassandra was BAWLING, because she needed her long hair for pageants. Tyra wanted her to have a Mia Farrow cut, but the stylists messed it up. Tyra was pissed, and insisted on cutting more off to give her the intended makeover style. When I was younger I was SO mad at Cassandra for not wanting to cut her hair! Now that I know more about how this all works, I think this was all set up. They love bringing pageant girls on the show and framing their stories like, "This girl is too self-confident, we're going to prove she cares more about pageants than becoming a model." And then they ruin her chances at succeeding in either. I think production saw the opportunity to create drama by bringing Cassandra on the show, cutting her hair short because they knew she needed it, and messed it up on purpose just so they could tell her to cut it again.
@KelseyHontz
@KelseyHontz 2 года назад
They did the same to Hadassah in cycle 22! They shaved half of her head, even though she was sobbing saying "this is the one haircut that will keep me from being able to do any pageants again."

This episode stayed in my memory since it aired, but I remembered it very differently. I thought Cassandra just decided to leave because she didn't want to cut her hair. Watching again... Wtf... The logic outcome would have been "I don't want to cut my hair", "OK, then go get your hair and makeup done, and get ready for the shoot"... Why did she have to even leave the set? And whyyyyyy that incredibly threatening speech from Tyra during panel? "If you don't agree with something, you are "free" to go now"... These are techniques used in cults, damnit.

Cutting off someone’s hair without their enthusiastic approval has been considered a punishment throughout history in many different cultures. In modern day it isn’t as significant on that level, but I still think cutting someone’s hair off against their will (or forcing them to grow it out against their will) is abusive. At the very least it qualifies as a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

It's not really a choice if it's coercion. We have to remember the difference between natural consequences and threats made by someone of authority in order to control an individual. The difference is important. If this were a choice, a natural consequence of her not cutting her hair would be that she would have a disadvantage to the other girls in the competition, leading to poor photoshoots that would ultimately lead to her not winning the competition. That would still allow her to make the choice and it would be at her discretion. However, we know that in this case, this is coercion because the result of her not cutting her hair was made by someone in power over her. "If you don't cut your hair, you have to leave. Your choice." Not really a choice because the result was decided by someone of authority with the intent for control and not to protect. That's the difference.

This situation also echos when there are models on the show that don't want to shoot topless. ANTM made it seem like it was mandatory in order to succeed as a model, when that is absolutely not the case. Supermodel Nadja Auermann spoke about shooting topless in a documentary about Helmut Newton; she declined shooting topless for him, despite Netwon being one of the biggest photographers at the time, and then when she was older and felt comfortable with it, she did and had a wonderful experience.

I think because she got a good photo last week and panel didn't expect that from her and they thought she was too confident in herself (beauty pageant), they did this to break her. Now yes, as a model (top model i guess), you need to adapt and know that they want certain looks for you, and I think she had to be aware there was a chance they were gonna cut her hair when she came on the show, but that doesn't mean production don't have agendas as well. I remember this episode, back then I thought Cassandra was just being difficult because that's how they made it look. But now watching this as an adult this is just wrong. They criticized her because she didn't want to cut 1 in off of her hair after they already took like 9 inches off lol But they literally eliminated her for it. It really didn't matter. Plus you could already tell she was not comfortable with the haircut in the first place because she kept covering it up with that bandana on her head. I think they just did this on purpose for ratings. They knew she wasn't comfortable with her hair short so they probably said let's cut more off to really mess with her for the show. Just terrible.

I would personally take it a step further and say it isn't just: If the models don't obey us, we can't do what we want with the show.. I personally think the models obeying them IS what they want to do with the show. These (judges, Jay and guest judges) are all people who are treated like royalty in their little pocket reality of modeling and fashion, but outside of that niche, not many people know or care who they are. I think Tyra wanted to make the show not as a way to uplift aspiring models, but with the intention of letting public access television viewers know that she is important and should be revered outside of that bubble too. Every episode seems to be the embarrassment Olympics where the winner is whoever was willing to grovel to them the most. And I want to be clear that I don't think the real modeling or fashion industry is like this, but I do think it's the driving force of the show. I was obsessed with the show as a kid and as an adult it seems really obvious that none of this is about modeling. But that's just me.

She needs to feed her ego because she’s not the almighty queen she believes herself to be. She’s no longer a darling of the fashion industry, like her arch nemesis, the absolute goddess herself Miss Naomi. While Naomi is no saint, she’s not trying to hide who she is like Tyra is. And people love a queen who can still strut a runway like nobody’s business and throw shade. Tyra 👿❌, Naomi 👸🏽❤️

Even as a kid, I remember thinking that Tyra was very much into making seemingly every situation about herself. It was very cringe how much attention she seemed to need and it was weird to me even then how no one else seemed to recognize that something was off about that. Now as an adult I can see the raging narcissistic tendencies and have more real-life context for why so many people can’t recognize the destructive behaviors of people that behave like her. Her ego truly is a black hole that everyone in the bubble of this show repeatedly gets sucked into.

Tyra was pretty immature about it, too-all she had to say was “Cassandra did not want to cut her hair, so she left. We accept and respect her decision.” Not everyone is going to agree with you, Tyra. Easy, they wanted to messed her look up. For pageant girls it is really important to keep your hair long, that is like a standard, even though nowaday it's up to them to have their hair long or short, as long as they feel they're beautiful and confident with it. To me, Cassandra was already beautiful with long brunette hair that she had earlier on, she's a beautiful pageant girl and could still be a model looking the way she was, but Tyra knew that Cassandra would be torned apart if she has short, pixie, Mia Farrow kind of hair cut, so they purposely chose that hair cut for her makeover. Purposefully chose the Mia Farrow hair is one thing, but intenally messed up while cutting her hair just for her to have another cut the next time is a whole new level of messed up. The hair cut Cassandra got was a hot mess, and the bleach blonde didn't help much and only made it worse. They totally ruined her look, she didn't look great with it at all.

I THINK what we need to be talking about is how Diana was the "fiercely real" model and they edited her to make her look just as thin as everyone else. Cassandra was given the makeover to shed the pageant queen persona she had in the beginning. The additional bit cut off was to give the specific haircut Tyra wanted. At the end of the day, it was a competition show and the girls took a lot of abuse. If you want something really shocking, look at Australia's Top Model and see how they busted out the scales constantly to weigh the girls. It was brutal.

My opinion is that if a certain model/photographer/director, you name it, doesn't want to do something a certain way, or is uncomfortable with doing something that was originally planned, it's time to: 1. Have a group discussion about it, without judgment or mockery, and 2. Figure out ways to adjust/readjust the shoot in a way that will still give the same impression, but won't be something someone can't personally handle. It's an excellent way to think more outside the box, and inspires cutting edge techniques, when trying to solve a problem where everyone feels safe, comfortable, and actually enjoys themselves and has fun in the process. Contrast that with America's Next Top Model's approach of "if you don't do EXACTLY what we tell you to, then you're out of here," and it's an obvious choice as to which studio would be the one I'd want to work with, and why. Also (still my opinion), ANTM is such a walking contradiction, since it's not really "America's" Next Top Model, it's whoever Tyra and the judges want as America's Next Top Model. And if they really cared about the girls "discovering who they really are," why do they punish those who already know who they are, and refuse to compromise themselves or their standards for the sake of the show? Also, the judging panel is a complete joke, since modeling is a subjective art form anyway, but even more than that, they only show ONE photo of each model as the basis for their judgment (if there isn't something else that happened on the show to sway their "judgment"). ONE. PHOTO. Now I'm no judge, but you would think by comparing ALL the photos, both the unedited and the final edit, to properly judge the model, it would give the show at least a little more credibility. But no, they have to pick the "best" photo (which again, is subjective) of each model showing ONLY the final edit. I really don't intend to be mean about America's Next Top Model, but that show has been so problematic from the very beginning, and at this point, I find it extremely toxic, especially for the younger aged girls/women who aspire to be models (like me at that age). It sends the wrong messages, such as you having to do EVERYTHING the photographer/director says, even at the cost of your comfort/values/reputation, or you won't get to keep the job or stay in business for very long. And (still my opinion), it's just a way to control gullible/naive/innocent girls from how they do their makeup/hair, to how they speak/walk (even at the JUDGING PANEL they attempt to manipulate and control every little thing about them). It also encourages the cutthroat mentality of stepping on other people to try to get on top. Overall, not a show I EVER want to watch or endorse, especially when I have daughters of my own. I don't want them to think, if they ever want to become models, that this is the kind of behavior to expect from the people in charge, nor do I want them to lose their self image or self worth over a stupid competition.

What really irks me about this situation is how, instead of equipping the models with the skills needed to deal with difficult clients (WITHOUT letting clients walk all over them), Tyra & co. are basically reinforcing the toxic culture in the industry which already considers models "lesser" than their clients' needs. Each individual instance might "just be a haircut" on its own, but imagine having to do that for every single photoshoot you book. What if one client wants you to lop off all your hair, then the next makes you put extensions in, the next asks for a buzz cut, and so on? It's just not feasible to accommodate every client's request, especially when they're permanent/semi-permanent! Tyra is basically teaching these young girls that they have to put up with any and all unreasonable BS if they want any chance at being successful. What the show really should be doing is teaching the girls, "Hey, this is what the industry is like, sometimes you'll have to make difficult choices, but losing one job is not the end of your career. Make the choice that YOU are comfortable with." But of course, that wouldn't make for good reality TV. 🙄 I get that it's not so black and white in reality. I saw an insightful comment from another user about how a select few individuals have a monopoly on the high fashion scene. Sometimes there are powerful people you just can't piss off, as frustrating as it is; sometimes rookie models simply can't afford to turn down jobs. However, I do wish models were taught more often that they DO have a voice and they CAN change this industry.

The thing that’s killing me is if she complied, then the rest of the photoshoots would’ve been complaints from the judges that her hair is TOO short

If someone told Tyra to cut an inch off of her hair she would throw a b*tch fit and tear the place down. If anyone ever used that tone of voice to me and said "if you don't like it you can pack your bags" I would be out and gone. Nope.

Ó, remember her! Poor girl, she cried so hard when they cut her beautiful hair :(( I totally understand her decision, she looked so much better with long hair.

she does everyone saying that it was part of the worst makeover but not in history with the short hair

Yes, I felt sorry for her - maybe cuz I have long hair too. :( There were so many horrible makeovers in this show made the girls feel depressed or traumatized.

Not sure if she did end up being a Miss USA, but she did hit the jackpot with a super attractive and successful actor husband.

Ugh, and she's not going to just have to deal with it growing out, she's going to have serious roots! The blonde they gave her is not even nice! It's really brassy! With her natural color, they must have fried it to get it that light in one go! This poor girl is going to need a corrective color in a couple weeks just for it to look natural again! I stopped doing short hair because it was so much maintenance.

The way you squealed when she said no!! I will say though, she actually looks stunning with the bandana on and the short hair :o

Ridiculous and I think this was done for drama as this group was actually supportive of each other .Also the looks are not at all what any agency will like. I did this internship for an agency in Uni . They want models to be natural looking . Example if you have a dirty blonde dark ash color the might want to brighten in up but in general they would never ask or do ridiculous makeovers .Why ? Well ,it’s very easy to use wigs and faux hair to style. It’s a matter of enhancement of your hair. So they prefer natural and healthy. If you have perfect symmetry and amazing bone structure you probably would look great with a short cut but they don’t push that on you .Also if a client wants to do a drastic change like a shaved head or platinum and black pixie cut. An agency would decline that unless you were being selected for an entire campaign. As you are under a contract for an ongoing brand and would be in a lucrative contract for 6-12 months and you would probably be limited to what other jobs you could take during a contract. It’s just baffling as literally no agency does this . I also have to say that if you are petite or short you can work in Asia like Elise who has been the definition of a high fashion model. The only models that can get away with showing up to a runway show with multi colored hair are when the designer , or the brands creative director ask you too.

Especially that you can change hair color easily in the Photoshop.

My guess is that when she initially had her hair cut, she may have said that she'd never go shorter. They may have used that as ammo against her for future episodes.

Tyra gave that Mia Farrow haircut soo many times and it never worked for any of the models 🙄 idk why she couldn’t let it go.
