This episode is a perfect depiction of the sexism and degradation of women in the early 2000’s which I feel like no one talks about but I was born in 1994 and I remember the kinds of horrible things said about women during this era. They had the same issue again, because they were unwillig to heat up a Pool and the poor girl did get hypothermia and the pictures were not as sharp because she was shivering and clapping with her teeth. They are aware that clothes that looks amazing on 0 size model is just a rag with some famous name attached to it… modeling is definitely a stupid job to have and there is always just 2-3 famous models every 10 years that might have some fame but everyone else is just a nobody. Also today Instagram models get so much more money for promoting and it costs so much less to hire someone to take a pic with their phone. They want young people to promote stuff for young people. People over 30 don’t have time and don’t care for the products because we don’t trust anyone but our close friends and ourselves.

They pulled an entire eating disorder storyline for Elyse that several of the other contestants got involved in, very uncomfortable to watch, especially for someone like me who's had issues with an ED himself in the past. Also kind of hypocritical to feign concern for her health in the same elimination where Robyn is labelled plus size. Granted, it was a different time, but still, big yikes. Sidenote, Ebony was done dirty too throughout the season, Robyn had it in for her because she's a lesbian so production jumped on that to make her the stereotypical angry black woman.
@sighcantthinkofaname

I learned recently that Shannon wrote on her blog about her own struggles with an ED. She was actually hospitalized as a young teen because she passed out after restricting so much. She's doing much better now, but I can't imagine how it felt for her to hear those speculations for Elyse when she had struggled herself. It certainly wasn't a friendly environment to talk about what you're going through.

Totally agree, and also, a side note: I don't think it was a different time back then in the sense that saying this stuff was okay. I was watching this as it came out, and I remember there being an episode of E! News (the drama and commentary channel in the era of cable TV) where a woman absolutely BLASTED Tyra for this specific episode. It was a big deal at the time, back in 2003. This is a total theory of mine, but: I don't think there was much of a difference between now and then in terms of what was 'okay' and what wasn't. I kinda think that the only thing that's changed is our increased ability to talk to each other about messed up things, now that social media has connected us. Because now, regular people have more power than ever to express their complaints and have them seen/validated by millions of other people. Maybe I'm romanticizing the internet too much, but I think the major difference between then and now is only that we couldn't connect with each other as much as before.
@jnbg61584
@jnbg61584 2 года назад
@@honestlynotsponsored you definitely have valid points. The internet and social media helps immensely with sharing how messed up the media was back then and still is now, unfortunately. Looking back on it now, we have hindsight being 20/20 and everything to know just how wrong it was/is. Just like certain jokes, terms, etc was “okay” then because our society had a different mindset. This was passable then because it was kinda the norm, just like the Kate Moss/Calista Flockhart/Lara Flynn Boyle era of the waif stick thin women, yet still expected have a chest….somehow
@Itri_Vega
@Itri_Vega 2 года назад
@@honestlynotsponsored I should highlight that I am from Germany so mentalities might have been different between the US and here, but at least in my immediate environment EDs were often treated as illnesses stemming from vanity. If you had them you were obsessed with beauty and weight rather than today's theory which assumes that people mostly develop them out of a need for control, and that there are also restrictive EDs that manifest as an obsession with healthy food rather than no food or purging and thus go unnoticed for a long time until the person visibly avoids food groups. The sensitivity around the issue isn't quite where it should be - some people who know I've had one still constantly talk about how they are too fat and need to reduce their food intake around me. I'm not just talking harmless holiday banter about having gained weight, but full on beach body obsession.

It's sad how this was an actual thing back in the day (still is today actually) calling girls with close-to-normal body types as "meaty" and bodyshaming models (Hi, Ashley Graham. Yes, you. I'm talking about you ironically bodyshaming other models. Scared to be dethroned from being the "plus-sized supermodel"? Methinks so.) 🙄

Whoa, especially India from cycle 23 winner, i'm so insulted & dissapointed... i'm not surprise in general fashion industry is competetive & unhealthy standard until now, if you're model good luck on your 1st job, not all models are healthy but sometimes healthy thick toned curvacious supermodels like Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes, Eniko Mihalik, Joan Small, Maryna Linchuk is pretty healthy at least you're not rescrticting the food and your enjoying the food. When ANTM began airing I was a 21 year old flight attendant in my first year of flying, I’ll never forget one of my good friends told me about this show (Cycle 2 was airing when she told me) and I had been hooked ever since, recording episodes on my VCR to watch when I got home LOL. Never missed an episode. What’s incredible to me now as a 40 year old looking back is how bad this show overall is aging. We used to be so excited to see Tyra, Miss Jay, Mr Jay, loved calling Janice a b!tch haha….but my god, it’s crazy how problematic everything really was! I’m enjoying watching your take on some of the classic episodes I’ll never forget!

I absolutely hate the early seasons because they focus sooo much on weight and literally they all look good. These early seasons are just evidence of why the girls who grew up in the early 2000s have body issues. Like all their bodies are gorgeous and they’re like “she needs to lose weight” and then “she’s too thin, no meat on her bones”

The only redeeming critique from the photographer, albeit delivered in the wrong was, was about Shannon and her tanning. It is much easier to make a model look tan for a shoot than the reverse, not to mention the damage to her skin, the increased difficulty for the makeup artist to work with skin that can be peeling and flaking.

There was definitely a concept back then of just having that "it" factor. People were supposed to be naturally good/fitting for the thing they were trying to achieve and then hone their skills from there. You rarely thought it was really ok to start from 0 talent/skills. And we were all conditioned to be so competitive, we really leaned into that. If you were at least a little bit naturally good at the thing you were trying to do people would just call you out and say you weren't fit for it.
@LoXena
@LoXena 2 года назад
I was just thinking about that! Like we were supposed to instinctively know how to do something out of nowhere, without any guide or indications. I'm glad more people know about social determinism nowadays. The people who were "naturally gifted ", actually learned from their environment for most part. If you criticise a little girl about her look she most likely will be stiff and shy during a photoshoot when grows up VS when you constantly praise someone, this person will grow up having confidence.

One of the interesting things to note is that almost none of the photographer's comments while shooting happen when his face is visible. The one we do really see is Kesse's shots, and the comments he makes there could be easily edited over the rest of the sessions. We see his/their comments to each other and in the interviews to camera, but those interviews are always heavily produced. All that being said, though, so many of the problems the contestants ran into during the entire run of this show could have been addressed if they had been permitted to actually see their shots like half way through their part of the shoot (or maybe even after a couple test shots, so they actually ~knew how things looked, as opposed to how they thought they looked). But no, that would have ruined "the mystery" and made it harder to yell at them for not already being pros.

Yeah cycle 1 of this show is really something else. It feels really unsafe in a lot of parts. And the photoshoots are by and large trash tbh. I LOVE how you brought up the fact that they refuse to address the model directly regarding their criticisms/corrections while also subtly insulting her in her face. That's exactly how gaslighting works. The perpetrators purposefully dis-clude their victim in their conversation, while insulting/accusing them. . THEN if the victim attempts to call them out on it by directly attempting to make communication with them... they are denied, scoffed at, mocked, accused of being "paranoid" or "too sensitive" and then continued to be ignored. . This makes the perpetrators appear to be "too above" their victim to communicate directly with them while completely manipulating and twisting the narrative to seem as though the victim was "too troublesome" or "not worth it" in the first place... . (The overall goal of this type of behavior is to get others to isolate and shun this victim from positive and healthy communications -- which then they attempt to make the victim feel as though they are somehow "inferior" as a person, and making them be "all alone" so that they eventually become depressed, socially isolated and self-destructive.) . Thankfully I majored in psychological studies in college- narcissism and other destructive personality types were most definitely includes in this! . Soooooooo .... Again. To reiterate.. . These are all Tendencies of Die-hard TRUE and REAL malignant narcissists ! . . . BTW: this post is directly in reference to Jessica's statement when she says: "Do you guys see the issue here? They're not actually communicating with the models. They're kind of just snickering in the background ..." Maybe say all that stuff TO HER! "PROBLEM SOLVED." Video: 12:03-12:35

"Fun" thing they did in Cycle 1 was send a personal trainer in to give all the girls a public weigh-in and BMI or something like that. Like it could have been a decent moment, teaching them about exercise that will help them model (increased flexibility and core strength for dynamic poses, perhaps) but nope, it was just another opportunity to humiliate them on television. iirc, it didn't even go anywhere because it's not like they had regular fitness checks with this trainer guy.

John, the fitness instructor, was featured inat least 3 episodes, prior to going to Paris. One was the weigh-in (something they did for they next couple of cycle); one involved had drama with Robyn while praising Adrienne; one commending Adrienne and praising Elyse (the episode that highlight Elyse alleged eating disorder) After more thought, I think the real reason why they had John and the fitness segments was to better assess if one of the girls did have an eating disorder. If this sounds, you can spot that ANTM has very odd, roundabout way to showcase a few things, from time to time.

I saw something similar on a different modeling competition show. They brought a doctor in to give all the contestants physicals and they were told they were at a healthy weight by the doctor but the judges were always telling them that they weren't thin enough to be models thereby basically saying that being a model is not healthy.
