I did drive one of these back in the 70s when I was working as an auto mechanic. I had a Dr who was a customer who owned several older cars and he brought his 26 T sedan in for some maintenance and I got to deliver it back to his house after it was done. What a fun ride it was too. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories, Chuck.

Hello: Thanks Chuck. Never wanted one of these cars, but that one could change my mind. My grandmother born in 1907 gave me a schooling on her life. She said there were only 2 colors black and navy blue. At one time my grandparents lived half a mile from a junk yard full of these cars, and the owner died. I heard his son came and got a 12 cylinder Cadillac and left with it. When Interstate 77 was built a d9 dozer buried them. They are about 2 miles south of the New River bridge.

The model T was actually very bare bones even by 1920's standards. Henry made them to be cheap and reliable, easily attainable for your average family. That and he made millions of them, he's the father of the modern manufacturing process.

Model T's are fun cars to drive, everybody waves, most want rides. It is somewhat more work to drive one, but they were designed to be maintained by ANYONE. With non-freeway top speeds, it is relegated to around town driving. Unfortunately, Clarence was 100% correct, "The brakes suck." You are depending on a foot pedal to tighten a fabric band around a rotating drum in the transmission. On wet pavement, you can stop the driveshaft with the brake pedal, which makes ONE rear wheel skid, and the front wheels, where a lot of weight is, have no braking at all. Absolutely fun to drive, but not safe in traffic at all.

I noticed only one comment about braking your arm when hand cranking an engine like this The comment was made by karl he failed to mention if you pull the crack towards your wrist you are more apt to get slapped by the crank you hand should always be on the outside of the rotation not the way it was depicted in this video and allot of ether videos Iv seen I noticed you did cup your hand though allot of ppl seem to grip them tight as if they could stall the engine lol proper cranking technique gets more important when dealing with tractors Beautiful car excellent video
@davidcookmfs6950
@davidcookmfs6950 6 лет назад
Correct. It is important to pull the crank with the left hand and to not have the your fingers clenched around the handle, but extended and to pull up with the left hand cupped under the handle. Then grab the left fender for leverage and pull up. I would have the timing fully retarded (up) and the throttle about 1/4 the way down, or less if you can get away with it. But he is right to make sure the brake/shifter is pulled all the way back to make sure it doesn't run over you. And yes, the braking on those is a nightmare for modern drivers. There were no brakes on the wheels. It used a transmission brake applied to the drive train, which meant that you had braking on the drive wheels. Ford when to four-wheel drum brakes in the Model A.

When asked what colors he would like the new Model T's to be offered in, his answer was (famously), "You can paint 'em any color you want...as long as it's black". ALL model T's were BLACK.
@dlwatib
@dlwatib 7 лет назад
Originally. But the Model T had a long run, and this car was the second to last year of the run.
@MrGrentch
@MrGrentch 6 лет назад
Nope. That's a remarkably widely believed old wive's tale. The first T's could be had in blue, grey, red and green. The one colour it _couldn't_ be gotten in was black. It was five odd years _after_ the introduction of the T, before you could get one in black. Now after that Ford reduced the options to black(and many different shades of same) for a period, because it was cheaper to offer only one colour, so maybe that's where the idea comes from? Then towards the end of production as you say the colour options returned

In 1922/1923, Ford made a bare bones Roadster that sold for $250. That was the car that could only be had in black. Yes I own a Model T too.

Is it safe to hand start it with ur right hand? I might be wrong but I've heard that if the engine backfires and u use ur right hand, it could break ur wrist/arm.
@MrEmiosk
@MrEmiosk 2 года назад
Safe, depends on how much you trust your own mechanical skills to maintain the spark coils. A backfire is when the engine starts spinning in the wrong direction, and if this happens the crank whips counterclockwise. Using the right hand will rip the crank out of your hand spin around and hit you on the back of the hand and or wrist, seriously bruising if not even breaking bone. Now to avoid this you use the left hand, and only crank from 10 o clock position to one o'clock position, this ensures that when the engine backfires your hand and arm is flung away from the crank (assuming of course you don't have your thumb around the handle, this would result in you being flung with the crank and a broken arm). TLDR: Yes, but no.

Fuel left in the cylinder and one of the cylinders being in perfect alignment to give of a spark from the sparkplug. The engine has a spark timing cog that dictates which sparkplug will fire when.

Did you add the key start? Or this car has two ways to turn on?
@MrEmiosk
@MrEmiosk 2 года назад
A magneto (a bunch of copper coils and magnets genereating electricity within the transmission) and a battery starter. The magneto does nothing if the crankshaft doesn't spin, but the battery is used like it is in a normal car... except you press a button on the floor that completes a circuit to a starter motor that does the cranking for you. Early model T's did not have this electric starter using on the crank. But later models had it as an option you could add, and then afterwards it came standard with the cars.

may I have a suprise for you mate. They can if you set the fuel mixture right, keep the rpm at a deacent 25-30~mph and set the spark timing to ideal you can get 25-28mpg... though usually its around 20mpg also... 60mph... what?! you might achieve 45mph if you are going down hill with a tail wind.
