One of the things that makes Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal such good tennis players is their footwork. Their footwork doesn't just get them from A to B... it's actually a weapon!
FYB head coach Will Hamilton and Yann Auzoux (a 2008 and 2010 Washington Post coach of the year and former Davis Cup player for Cameroon) walk you through the footwork patterns that Federer, Nadal, and other top players use during a match... in other words, modern tennis footwork.
Will here... This is one of the best footwork videos online (granted, I'm biased). It's actually one of the best videos we've ever produced. Yann is a great coach and he shows you exactly how to move quickly, efficiently, and in a way that helps you prevent injuries.
Please let us know what you think of the video in the comments below!

Great training tips... I like the video. No one has talked about Federer's footwork as one of the reasons he doesnt get injured, which is the truest statement I have ever heard any trainer mention.

Thanks for this video. I tried it this am and I can really feel the difference in my shots. I feel I can reach more shots and hit it with a lot of pace without too much arm acceleration.

Thank you, I needed to see them spelled out like that. I already knew the pivot from watching pros and listening to Oscar Wegner, but this taught all the steps and the reason behind doing it. I look forward to using them, to take time away and move more efficiently.

this guy is very knowledgeable. as a teaching professional myself alot of this stuff can be easily translated to alot of my students. I really like the different verbage. especially about breaking down the open and closed stance. I find many intermediate playerd use open just for the fact that they see good players doing it and don't understand the benifits and such.

Thank you guys. your videos inspire my learning. Have any thoughts about old tennis? In our tennis club all of them uses old tennis with no footwork and they think they are pros aka "veterans". I'm just confused but I think I will stick on relying these lessons, watch how Djokovic moves and the gang. Many thanks.

I am living in Switzerland, and sometimes you met people who played with Federer, sometimes when he was a kid. A friend of my, a tennis coach, told me that Federer came once to to his club and asked to train in the court he was giving lessons. Of course he said yes. My friend said that several minutes in the beginning of the training, Federer was playing incredible slow, not moving well, just trying to hit the ball clean. With the time he began to speed up, and after 20 minutes Federer was playing really fast. You can see the same in this video: very slow, not moving well, etc.

just noticed Roger use the pivot step a lot this week in toronto (especially on the forehand side). btw will, could you do an analysis of this week in Toronto? Especially Fed's tough matches with Berdych and Djokovic and how Murray was able to pull through in the final

With old wooden rackets, closed stances and open grips were the rule. Eastern grip front foot points at the net. Now, closed grips and open stances are the rule. I would argue that the speaker's opinion is not strictly true: the level of athleticism is generally higher, but the influence of technology is very strong in tennis. The ball stays on the racket so long, and the sweet spot is so much bigger, than it was 30 years ago.

Nicolas, its referring to his weight shift which adds to the MASS part of the mass & momentum. Does that help? That's why when Serena uses her legs and you see her lean toward the shot, she can hit with mind-blowing speeds. I loved this video. Excellent job explaining the various foot patterns. Explains why Roger makes it look so easy. The young man in the orange shirt who demonstrated the karaoka so well looked like Roger with that footwork! I don't really understand the benefit of the split jump shown at the end of the video, unless its simply to increase the forward momentum in neutralized, balanced manner (not leaning right or left)??

I completly agree with the whole moving into the ball part. But as I see it, the walking step almost entirely blocks the rotation/uncoiling of the hips and upper body. By moving your left foot forward (right handed player) your hips just cant rotate into the ball. As a consequence the upper body cant rotate as much, and all that is left is your arms and shoulders, which have to compensate for the loss of power throughout the kinetic chain. So what you get is a more complicated shot, with less power.... Any thoughts on that?

Correct me if am wrong, but would adding the hop to your movement create more spin on the ball since it emphasizes the downward to upward swing path?

@euroclyde You have finally said something I agree with: "if your feet aren't in the right place, this amount of force you can transfer to the ball is reduced." But how do you know the feet being located in that area is not a side effect of work on the inside of the body and just because someone consciously puts there foot there doesn't mean they are replicating the work of the inside of the body? Energy is transferred on the inside of the body, which we can't see.

hey Will, quick question: the Pivot Step (16:48), allows you to return quickly to the middle but, how can you avoid a completely open stance?
@SSStennispro
@SSStennispro 11 лет назад
efficient footwork is learned, whether intentionally or unintentionally - nevertheless it is learned. teaching efficient footwork patterns is a must if you desire to improve, pros do not have to "think" about their footwork because they were taught specific footwork patterns when they are young - I have players all the time that were left up to themselves "how" to move to the ball - that's why they seek out professional teachers - to begin the process of becoming a better player
@clewalent
@clewalent 14 лет назад
@champ1193 i don't know how to explain it is true..but the cross step is actually more proficient than the basic shuffle..umm for me it give me more time to recover. You're right though i kept tripping the first time i used it but after a while after a long time of practice, it's better than the shuffle. just my 2 cents :)
