One thing that I appreciate about the Grim Reapers is that they (Cap) takes the time to provide chapters to its valued viewers so they can decide which parts of the video they watch. This takes a lot of time and really helps so thank you!

One thing to consider in real life is that NAS North Island and the 32nd Street Naval Station are both shielded to the West by the high ridge of coastline called Point Loma. This is a barrier that missiles would have to surmount in order for their radars to track targets in the bay. This high ground would also allow the Navy's ground-based search and tracking radars to detect intruders from the West to a greater distance.

How many missles will get fooled by the museum ship "Midway" in port.

Great video, 2 small remarks: 1. As far as I know the USMC has been refitting their legacy hornets with the AN APG 79 from the Super Hornet, so using f18f in the simulation was pretty valid. 2. Just like in Pearl Harbor, after the 1st 15min probably at least one ship in the harbor would be manned and at least its air defense would come online.

I know this scenario is not really about realism, however, the DDGs would not be that close together and that close to shore when defending such a target area. So i imagine the duty section are able to activate defense based off a quick read of the duties of a duty section. At the end of the workday, these war ships are manned by what is known as a duty section. When Sailor’s head home at the end of the workday, a portion of the crew stay behind to maintain security and conduct maintenance and training. To supplement the ship’s crew, the Navy utilizes a harbor patrol security division to protect the ships, piers, and personnel at the base’s waterfront. The Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) harbor patrol unit is responsible for guarding the largest congregation of U.S. Navy ships on the west coast. NBSD has a pier line that is almost two miles long and is homeport to between 50 to 60 ships, depending on homeport shifts, commissionings and decommissionings. But NBSD harbor patrol’s area of responsibility does not stop there. “The mission of harbor patrol is to secure the waterfront for all three installations in the metro area, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base Point Loma, and Naval Base San Diego,” said Senior Chief Master-at-Arms Bernard Hyppolite, the leading chief petty officer for NBSD’s harbor patrol unit. “We are very unique; we are the only harbor security that does that.”

The USN has been developing and testing the latest Patriot Pac3 with the Aegis system. Looks like they might eventually equip some ships with this missile.

YJ21 maneuvers **drastically** in their mid and terminal trajectory. The 'yj21' in dcs is basically a faster Skud.

It's been mentioned allready in the comment, (and was mentioned last time), that a number of the ships in the harbour would be in a state where the defences could be brought online in minutes and slaved to the systems of the two ships outside. Not sure if DCS has the ability to model that now, (i know an older video specified they didn't then), but might be worth trying to simulate it by putting a few more ships out of the harbour if it doesn't. Someone also mentioned a nearby naval air station, (North, wherever that is), that apparently has patriot systems visible on public satellite images.

Any video with the Reapers and my city in it is a good day! There are also multiple bases within 100 miles to the North and East of us as well. Southern California has an insane amount of Navy, Marine and Air Force bases.

I'm not sure about USN operations, but are ships in dock completely cold-shutdown, ie. engines cold, weapons shutdown, radars and sensors completely offline? If they're not is it possible ships in port could act as fire support/CIWS pickets for the carriers or larger ships?

Is it possible to activate the ships that are inactive in the middle of a fight in DCS? I am just curious because once the Burke's fire, they would have sent out a mayday to the port, and the port would awaken, albeit slowly. Yeah, there wouldn't be crews on board initially, but at least a few additional ships would probably be able to get automated defenses up and running within 10-15 minutes. And I doubt that the super carrier would just be unmanned entirely. There would be a skeleton crew on board at least wouldn't there?

If the US Navy let an enemy fleet get that close w/o scrambling the carrier - then they've completely failed. In my naval experience, that would be very unlikely.

The biggest mistake I see is in saying that the ships in port would not be able to shoot. As Nealetony stated, there is a duty section that remains on the ship overnight to provide security and fire party. This duty section consists of sailors from every job description on the ship. Also, the ships are not cold. The carrier's reactor is operating to provide electrical power. The cruisers and destroyers have shore power. These ships are also gas turbine powered and it doesn't take very long to get the engines running. Which isn't necessary unless they're getting underway. With shore power they would be able to power up the Aegis system (Spy radar and vertical launching systems) and be able to fire relatively quickly. They probably would not have been able to respond before the carrier was hit, they would have been able to long before the Arleigh Burke was hit. So that would NOT have been hit. Also, if you give the other ships a relatively long 15 minutes to bring the weapons systems online, they would be firing at about the same time the F-35's took off. At that point, only 14 F-18's had been shot down. You may have lost another 2 or 3 before all the chinese aircraft started getting blown out of the sky by SAM's. None of the F-35's would have even had the chance to participate. So I think, worse case is the carrier takes a hit and we lose maybe 20 F-18's. And within a couple of hours, the entire chinese fleet would be at the bottom of the sea.

In addition to MCAS Miramar, we also have NAS North Island and Camp Pendleton

San Diego is home port to a number of ships all of which can be assumed to have minimal manning that would allow cwiz to be fully operational and at a bare minimum missile batteries would be online within 15 -30 min of an attack. This scenario assumes nobody in the hundreds of personal attached to the off duty boats showed up for work.

Realistically speaking, would the docked Burkes/Ticos be able to be brought online and have ordnance available to help in the SAM defense?

Kinda silly that the F-35s would wait for legacy Hornets to go first. The mission would probably go WAY better for USA if you just deleted the Hornets entirely. Two questions. Wouldn't the two Burkes move into the line of fire so their point defences might help screen the docked ships? Also, how long would it take for a docked ship to get some minimal defences active - like CIWS, RAM and Sea Sparrow on the carrier?

OK... I was on the USS-Nimitz CVN-68. We were stationed out of Bremerton Washington at the time. We would take on our air wing in San Diego and make port for a few days for supplies before going on Westpac's. Can't wait to watch this as I knew the base as it was until I got out in 97'

I think the F15's from Fresno is a good call, especially because as dated as they are they are still extremely deadly. They might even have been able to have some with antiship missles scramble, not sure as they'd normally have more time so might not have that config ready but possible.

Mk 70 PDS (Payload Delivery System), the 40-foot shipping container-equivelant 4-cell launchers that are capable of firing all the same missile loadouts as the Mk 41, would be very interesting in this sort of scenario. The US Army ground-launched version, the *"Typhon",* just had its first battery declared operational this past June, and the US Navy is testing them now from helicopter decks, like from the Independence-class LCS a few weeks ago, and other flattop vessels, like the Lewis B. Puller-class ESBs. The Marine Corps may look into them as well, but regardless of the service operating them, one potential use case for the Typhon is airbase defense using ESSM & Standard Missiles (SM-6 in particular, at least initially, as it's now being procured in large numbers by the US Army).

You should run the simulation in distance of cargo ships parked offshore of a busy port. That's how a fleet amount of various missiles arrive on the western coast functionally undetected.

You need to do an at sea battle with the Chinese trying to cross the Pacific and being intercepted by a naval battle group and any nearby airfields.

Back in the 90's I lived in San Diego. They did a mock invasion. D-Day style on the Coronado strip which is like a long sand bank. I lived like 5 blocks away. It was insane lol.

Great video cap, would love to see the American follow up to a strike like this, i imagine it would be a true mobilise everything, fire everything moment to make sure the Chinese strike group never make it home. Would be interesting to see the chinese defences tested to destruction and think it would be a fun video for the carnage.

I wonder if once the us ships realise the carrier was the target (say by calculation of direction) would they have changed course to get a closer to the cruiser to provide more effective/efficient anti missle protection? Also interested if something like that can actually be done in the editor?

Forgot about NAS North Island, 2 miles from NAVSTA San Diego. There are two AFB's within 200 miles, Edwards north of LA and March which is west of LA, about 80 miles. This is 3 extra air bases, MCAS Miramar makes it 4. If it were fully modeled in this sim, the Chinese would have zero chance.. We're not even talking about any subs that would have been leaving or coming back into port in San Diego either.

Kinda odd that the USN ships are completely unmanned, Navy ships always have a duty section aboard (even during port visits) to stand watches for ship's security, and act as a skeleton crew to sail and fight in case of a surprise attack just like this. The only reason they'd be completely unmanned is if the ship is mothballed in reserves. Maybe they wouldn't fight at full efficiency until the crew could be recalled, but they would still be able to shoot back.

I'm pretty sure that by the end of that battle, those ships in port would've had enough crew to man some of the weapons to help with missile defense. And I'm pretty sure this would've been the Millennial version of Pearl Harbor, and a declaration of war would be headed to Congress for approval. There would be three naval fleets taking their reactors to full steam to Japan and the Indian ocean. And WW3 will begin. I thuroughly enjoy these war games scenarios. Oh, and the competition carrier landings😂

Fresno does have a bunch of F-15s but 30 minutes south of Fresno is the Lemoore Naval Air Station that has F-15s, F-18s & F-35C.

You know what would be kind of funny? If the US named a new surface to air missile "The Ritalin" to combat Hypersonic missiles.

Marines have F-35Cs for carrier ops. F-35Bs are meant for the amphibious assault ships, which do not have catapults nor arresting wires.

The SM missiles seem to always take a wildly incorrect trajectory when dealing with the hypersonics, for some reason flying miles over them and then choosing to turn essentially all the way around to hit them.

These are oddly satisfying even knowing that in real life that's a lot of souls not coming home

it is crazy, 15 years ago China had an airforce with outdated aircraft and missiles, and while this scenario is very unlikely, fast foward to 2023 they have capabilties to hit US assets in US territory, the modernization of the PLA is crazy, and they are not stopping.

Of all the wish list items I have for DCS, improving the naval assets and functions, mainly submarines and submarine weapons like Harpoons, antiship Tomahawks, torpedo's and sonar are at the top. And real ASW assets like the Seahawks, dipping sonar, rocket assisted torpedoes and all the other bits and bytes to make it all work. I am probably never going to see that in DCS, it will be another sim that is created, like the game Harpoon and Harpoon II.

Not often do I make comments but thank you to all the Grim Reapers for all the "What ifs" you deliver to us. One day maybe the server will have the capability to model every aspect of what we want, or could potentially have, then we can introduce a chaos factor into the situation i.e. Migratory birds impacting flights, the ability of rotary winged transponders decoying missiles away from ships but into the flight path of aircraft.

The only reason the sm6/sm3s are missing and the YJ21 got through is because of the altitude difference. Put them at the same 90k altutude where the SM doesnt have to bend to get the YJ and that wouldnt have gotten through. JMO.

I still think a fascinating scenario (or set of scenarios) would be related to the Senkaku Islands north of Taiwan. The area is almost exactly equidistant from Kadena and the Chinese bases on the mainland (approximately 450km). The northern air base in Taiwan is a bit closer but the southern base in Taiwan is again almost exactly the same distance. AND...in the real world, it is ACTUALLY disputed territory between Japan, the PRC, and the RoC (aka Taiwan). It's absolutely conceivable that significantly interesting things could happen in that area that could make multiple countries be motivated to do some interesting things. For example, there are surveys that indicate the possibility of very large oil reserves in that area of the East China Sea in what is relatively shallow water on the continental shelf.

The carrier is fine. That's going to buff right out. The Arleigh Burke is going to need some serious duct taping, though.

In case anyone worries that this is actually a threat: Tactically and strategically a huge loss on china. The US would mobilse at least 50% of their airforce, navy and national guard to sink those ships in the aftermath (which is more than the chinese have in total planes, much more), nothing would get away undamaged or home. Stategically, the pricetag is important but confusing, because the carrier has no airwing. Still, the US has 11 of them. Nobody sane in their minds would ever attempt something like that and like this unless you had a significant supply line and tech and forces to back it up. The closest quick reaction base is actually NAS North Island. The US Navy also has powerful detection and other assets on San Clemente Island, which is 60+ miles WNW of San Diego's harbor area. If China was really going to try and attack US military bases, they would be better off attempting to attack Guam, Samoa, or the Aleutian Islands. What would be interesting is to see a Chinese strike group navigate international waters off the US West Coast. It would be completely legal and scare the Hell out of everyone.

Best estimates are that the first batches of AIM-260's will be entering front line service with the USAF units by December 2023. Then wider deployment to the USN and eventually the Air National Guard/USMC by the end of 2025.

Well on the AIM-260 vs The peregrine missile loadouts... F35C loaded with 12 Peregrine missiles makes for a great missile truck @ medium ranges... kinda makes sense unless you are a AWACS hunter.
