Thank, it’s so hard to make these type, it feels so unnatural and annoying to be saying umm and soooo all the time. I have major vocal frys, this channel is definitely helping me work through that when I get to write, but I’ve gotta work on it, thank you for being kind :)
Hehe, it’s funny you say this. It’s actually totally not how I naturally speak in real life. Something about a camera brings out this stammering, stuttering version of me. It might sound natural, but if we met in person I wouldn’t sound like this. Sigh, I’m naturally much more articulate and don’t say umm and soo and overuse actually 😂. I’m working on it though, working on not sounding so stuttering and not sounding so calculated. Tough, I’m sure everyone knows I like RU-vidrs who write scripts, these videos are the toughest for me to make. :(
You do you chief, we love your content and love your style no matter how it comes out. There's a natural enthusiasm and personality that resonates, so it's all good :)
Something tasty from Mutable Instruments would fit nicely both sound wise and aesthetically in your case and for your melodic musical style. Fantastic little company with a great artistic vision.
I appreciate that you didn't feel the need to justify removing the Mother-32s. I've owned two myself and sold them as well. Also, mad props for the stop motion sequence.
In my case I didn't use the Mother-32 in a modular setup. I also rarely used the sequencer. Ultimately I decided I could get more mileage out of something with more oscillators and wave forms. I wouldn't put the Grandmother in the same category as the Mother-32. The Grandmother is a fully featured, well rounded, stand alone synth. An excellent option in my opinion.
Thanks for that. I was originally thinking of teaming up the Mother 32 with DFAM or Grandmother. But then read some reviews that DFAM is a wicked stand alone piece of kit too. Any experience with it? I haven't ever used modular so this is my first purchase. Leaning more towards the Grandmother now though as I definitely want a Moog in my collection. Cheers
I own teh Manhattan Analog CP3 which I believe is the kit build predecessor to the DTM. The CP3 is exactly derived from the mixer in a certain Moog synth, intended to overload asymetrically. The DTM (discrete transistor mixer) I think is the same general idea. I love my CP3, it's perfect for submixing oscs before a filter.
workflow, ease of use, getting the results that you want, finding inspiration ....being new to modular it took me well over 6 months to iron this out but once I got there it was clear.....and it was worth all of the time and effort , buying, returning, buying and selling on reverb.....I also sold the mother 32 :()
Exactly, Eurorack is so funny because unlike a hardware synth it’s our own creation. That being said, being new to Eurorack kinda makes me realize I’m super bad at synth design, makes me respect the pro synth manufacturers lol
this is really helpful insight... from the more practical bits to the insights about how modular synthesis is different strokes for different folks, & not only do we have to kinda learn who we are at the beginning of out modular journey, but sure enough... we grow & change as we go... (I'm just applying life stuff to modular here. I'm a total noob to modular synthesis.) anyway... thank you, noir.
I’m thinking about it, but I’d wanna film it in a creative way, I just dunno. Maybe something like patch of the week? I’ll patch something up and then talk about my thinking behind it?
Watching you refine your knowledge and preferences in modular is fun because your inclinations are so different than mine. I puzzle over how you approach your instrument. The rack you've built makes me wonder what it would be like to patch on it.
Thanks for sharing progress on your journey! Everyone talks about stuff they loved and kept, but it's just as important to know what didn't make the cut, and why. :)
Try using the 8 step sequencer> chan 1 maths (setup for slew) > quantizer>vco. If you had an precision adder you could invert the output and create a lower octave for the signal out of the keyboard.
The SV1 really is like a life form. Every time I sit down with a sound in mind for it I end up with something wildly different and more interesting than I could have made on purpose.
it'd be cool to see a 2019 video. I wonder what your thinking is now. This setup seems to be like a really disorganized collection of cool ideas. Wonder if you honed it in a bit. 54hp or bust
Great rundown - interesting perspectives on your current setup. I second the suggestion to consider a Turing Machine, particularly as melodic content is of interest to you. With the volts & pulses expanders (and some quantizing), there are many possibilities. I would enjoy seeing your take on it.
When I see a modular I think I won’t do that. I have fun on my 0-coast and I’ll be mashing it w/ my minibrute but when I think of the money and time required to go full modular I just lose interest, but my setup might as well be a rack modular set up. I built a stand for my gear and now they’re all up on the stand and looking modular sitting next to each other, so I guess you could say I went semi-modular? Never the less Cool setup man!
Noir Et Blanc Vie I mean I’m not saying it wouldn’t sound good but at that point, even the guy at the store was like “Dude just get a Synthesizers.com System and be done with it. “
Mart I use my system differently than maybe most, I’m a composer, so I hate to say it...but yeah, this was the most expensive toy I’ve ever bought 😂😂😂 No part of this modular has made me any money composing, so yeah, it’s fun, but not practical for the creative work I do. FMWallet lol
I do it too, absolutely. I try and cut it out when I can, but my editing style is different than yours. At least you don't obsessively smack your lips between sentences!
this was very cool. can you elaborate on how exactly you utilize pressure points and brains? it wasnt super clear from tthe snippet on them. but yeah cool video. made me subscribe.
New to the channel so I don't know if you checked it out yet, but I really dig my Malekko varigate 4+. It's a great sequencer with cool randomisation options.
Using Maths as LFO-type utility makes it a pretty flexible LFO, considering it's got log-exp rise and falls. I actually used it as that at first when I tried it. lol
Hey my friend, thanks for another great video. Question: did you totally get rid of the mother 32's? I own one but I've just never been able to really fall in love with it and integrate it into my setup.
As an owner of two Mother 32s and a DFAM, I can see why they really did not work out as you expanded your Eurorack case. Moog's 60HP sizes take up a lot of valuable rack space.
Hey John, it was totally the space issue, the mother 32 modules are a dream, but even with the 32 patch points it’s hard to justify 60HP. I miss the fat filters on the mother that’s for sure. Can you suggest a filter that might give me the save effect, something not too space hungry?
As Iddo Havinga mentioned, the AJH Minimod is a recreation of the 24db/oct. Moog transistor Ladder Filter in 14HP. Our friends at Perfect Circuit carry it: www.perfectcircuitaudio.com/ajh-synth-minimod-vcf-silver.html
Hardware synth/module/drum are like people, if you don't love them, what's the point ; it's important to love them for what they are ; hope you will find love and sing that love on youtube
I would go O-coast, but it isn’t rack-mountable out of the box, Make Noise would sell boat loads if they would just do that. It looks and sounds to me like the best starter Eurorack synth out there.
Very interesting. I am just starting out on my eurorack journey and have 2 Mother 32's. I have often wondered if I might part company with them in favour of something else!
It’s tough, mostly because I feel like I could do so much more with the space, I feel like quantizers never seem to make me happy, but I’ll definitely take your advice! :)
i have an older Pittsburgh Modular case (Move 104) and have experienced noticeable noise and signal bleed problems. Have you ever had any such issues with this case and PSU?
Oh, Noir Et Blanc Vie? Pff, he only has one of the B E S T eurorack setups I've EVER SEEN. For real though, this is an absolutely bonkers setup, dude! Especially with the Black Wavetable and Life Forms, that must have an insane amount of power. Also, love the diversity of brands and types of modules in here. Rock on! EDIT: Just curious, what are your thoughts on the Synthrotek Power Lunchbox cases?
The Structure power supply from Pittsburgh is INSANE, like, seriously. I love this case so freaking much. I don’t know much about the Synthrotek power, but if I’m going with power I’m sticking to something other than Synthrotek (no shade) personal choice. That being said, are you looking for a case and power right now?
Hi Noir et Blanc! I’m a newbie in the modular world, and I love your videos, always clear and well explained! I juste have one question, what do you think about the Behringer Neutron instead of the lifeforms? It is a bit bigger but some features are really entincing! I cannot make a choice, help!
Hey Marvin, I actually just walked by a Neutron at GC, literally 10 minutes ago and I thought to myself, “dang, why haven’t I at least tried this?” So your question presents a tough one for me personally. Behringer stuff is in a real good place right now, they’re really trying to push the limits of what can be done at certain prices. The only reason I’d probably say the SV1 is primarily support down the road. You can email Pittsburgh and they’ll have help for you right away. Sound wise, eh, it’s a toss up, pick your poison. Neutron will get you there on a budget,
Thanks for your answer!! I guess I had a good timing with my question ^^ I thought about asking Behringer but i assumed that you could give me a more neutral point of view. Well, thanks again, you just guided a bit more my choice! I think I will go for the neutron! I’ll tell you what is my first impression if you want, but I am 98% sure i’ll love it!
It will be my very first module!! I experimented on VCV Rack for a little while now, fell in love with modular synth, and I would like it to be my first step into hardware! That’s why I’m so hesitating
Looking good! Mordax data as a main clock sounds like a great idea, I tend to think of it as the youtube module since it's so great to show what's happening with a waveform or filter. I like how you have your stuff arranged with performance, accompaniment, and rhythm zones flowing into the mixer. Also would you say the analog replicator is as good a BBD as the moogerfooger pedals? edit: I'd recommend the Turing Machine and the 2hp quantize. I'll be making a video with those two really soon, I'll send you a link. Also, I think they fit exactly where 8-step vermona and 2hp seq modules are and they both have some nice blinking lights XD
Such a RU-vid module, it’s funny because I feel like every person I know (except Bo, loser lol) has one. Oooooo, that’s tough, I think the Moogerfooger BBD is cleaner, the Replicator is more fun to me though, lots of character. Thanks for the arrangement compliment, I’ve gotta refine it, some stuff is gonna be taken out sooner than later ;)
Hmm, I’ll definitely give it a look, hopefully it’s not too many HP. I feel like I’ve got some modules that I can sell and switch out for something like an envelope.
Noir Et Blanc Vie it’s currently on sale, think it will be discontinuited soon. With the expander it can sends gate on every stage of the ADSR, but it can also sends cv, pretty unique, so you can have a oscillator rising on attack, another one droning on sustain etc etc very creative. And loopable
I would honestly go with some synths with more voices for a first synth... U will probably need it more than u think. I got BS2 first and it was super cool, but i was missing playing chords, later I added system 1... If I would start from zero again I would definitely go with polyphonic synth first.
Oh, this is true. I kinda covered why I picked the SV-1 over it in my M32 vs SV1 Synth v Synth Video. To sum it up: the M32 takes up way too much space for its over functionality.
@@NoirEtBlancVie Thanks, Are they really that different in size? I saw a video of the mother 32 and absolutely loved the tone. Do you think a sub 37 or Behringer D sounds the same? I'll check that other video out
Hahahaha, you’re kinda right. I mean, it’s tough because I don’t know another module that does as much, so the upsides outweigh the downsides, but I do get crosstalk and noise on the headphone out.
To me modular lends itself to slow yet permanent upgrading or changing units. And if you're clever about it it might even be reasonably affordable (relative to a Moog Keith Emerson).
Hahahaha yes, relative to a Moog Keith Emerson...I looked on modular grid today and realized my setup is like $7000, that’s nuts. Makes me second guess this small setup I have 😳
@Noir Et Blanc Vie as a young man, I tried to get a friend of mine - who was a Harvard English Ph.D. - to read my poetry. He said “for every ten thousand people that write poetry, only a dozen read it. If you don’t read poetry, you have no business writing it.” Sometimes I feel something similar could be said of modular.
This is definitely an example of needing to watch the whole video. At the start it looks like you're implying that the analog replicator was a "mistake buy" owing to the juxtaposition of that phrase on the voiceover while the analog replicator was on screen, but lo and behold it has pride of place within your Eurorack system.
I can see that, since I’m a player I love having a rack with everything I need in it rather than an external controller like the Arturia key thing. Makes sense though, it’s a pretty large module for what it does.
Noir Et Blanc Vie thanks for the reply. I LOVE your vids. I hope my comment didn’t sound snarky. I’m a subscriber and can’t thank you enough for your honesty in reviewing gear and your passion for our art. You’re the man 🙏🏻😊
Great video. It's really interesting to hear someone explain module by module, why they have ended up with their specific setup. You should make a similar video in about a year! A humble suggestion on a minor speech pattern: Try using "actually" a bit less :) Have a great day.
I agree, I hate just taking to a camera without a script, it feels so unnatural. I listened back and realized exactly what you’re saying. I said “actually” constantly. Ugh.....I attempted to remove as many “soooo” and “ummm” as I could. I didn’t realize I used it so much. Writing scripts helps me talk more naturally, since I’m usually not thinking that deeply when I actually speak to people in person...oooops 😑
Ha ha, no worries, man. Presentation is hard and takes a lot of development - especially non scripted prsentation. You can only become aware of your own "presentation persona's" speech patterns, after you've listened/watched yourself for hours on end.
Still forget about the setting with my ornaments & crime and temps utile. Pam's is way easier think I should sell? Idk what your thoughts? I'm not a fan of menu diving when it comes to modules.
Yeah I feel you, I’d totally go with Pam’s myself, only because I know people who also have it who could show me what it’s all about, I’ve been thinking about one, but they’ve been sold out at perfect circuit when I’ve gone.
Sorry but you YT tube name is Noir et blanc vie...Did you mean La vien en Noir et Blanc,maybe?..Thats how i understand this title as a french.Thks 4 your vids too.
Since I have a Mother-32 and a Behringer Model D + DFAM I‘m getting a Expert Sleepers FH-2 for monster-polyphony and an ES-8 to add different iOS effects onto each voice. That case looks very good, but 1000 Euros? Wow. I wish that Intellijel woukd have a case with 3 real rows. Also loving the Mordax Data, I always use it to attenuate or watch CV that goes into the Mother-32 because it might cause damage (Moog using -5 to +5 volts where many other modules use 0-10 volts) For drums I finally got a Digitakt because I don‘t want to do Krell music and eurorack drums are a relly clumsy and Expensive thing. And I like to keep my options open with the sampling aspect of the Digitakt.
These trade wars are going to put a hurt on us eurorack makers, all of your parts just went up 25% in cost so any American made moog device will have future collectors value.
Errrr, these videos are so much harder to make, I hate rambling, it feels so unnatural to me 😑. I can try and do more talks though, I just gotta get comfortable and say “umm” and “sooo” less. Hehe
