My college astronomy professor said that there was evidence that a woman's period is pre-programmed when she is conceived based on what the moon is doing in its orbit around the Earth. An interesting theory, as both the moon and menstruation have a 30-day cycle. But apparently that theory has since been disproved.

You'd be surprised. My mom was legitimately perplexed as to why our young, unfixed beagle would hump our legs -- even hers. "Why is he doing that?!", she'd exclaim. This woman had already had THREE CHILDREN. She wasn't kidding, either -- pretending not to know.
@roberthaworth8991

FUN FACT: The cycles of a group of women -- say, all the women in a dormitory, or the older kids at summer camp -- will synchronize to within about a day of one another after they've been around each other for just a couple of months. It's believed this is an ancient biological adaptation that evolved to prevent excessive competition of females for mates, and vice versa, which could damage the social unit and prevent it from thriving (reproducing optimally).

Most dads (these days, anyway) had co-ed sexual education classes, and knew more than the basic line about it being a natural normal part of female reproductive function. I had to tell my dad, because even though I had packed hygiene supplies, I was visiting him 3,000 miles away from home and Mom. He's a practical man, and was very laid back about it besides for making sure I had enough supplies. I thought Molly's dad's reaction was a little corny, mostly sweet, and not at all creepy. It is, after all, a natural function and evidence of progress through puberty. Of course, nowadays Buzzfeed videos would feature a father-daughter empowerment craft with Molly painting chocolate chip cookies with her own menses blood. THAT'S not normal at all.

I suspect that for many young people, it was. Kids are thrown into sexuality far too young now, and are pressured to rack up points for 'scoring' at younger and younger ages. Girls feel pressured to grow up too quickly, rather than, as Molly's sister reassured her, understanding that we develop at different ages. The fun was more wholesome. Nowadays, it's 'cool' to be jaded and blase about the world long before we should be.

2:06 - this is a classic case of “breaking the 4th wall”. The first three walls being the two sides and the background. When the 4th wall is broken, an actor directly addresses the audience. It’s a kind of existential exercise. Wikipedia says, “The method of breaking the fourth wall in literature is a meralepsis (the transgression of narrative levels), which is a technique often used in metafiction. The metafiction genre occurs when a character within a literary work acknowledges the reality that they are in fact a fictitious being. The use of the fourth wall in literature can be traced back as far as The Canterbury Tales and Don Quixote.

Ms Jensen was ahead of her time in a way. Depending on the particular community and the mothers’ and grandmothers’ particular views, some wouldn’t have approved of the girls trying internal protection until they were older and maybe married. But the school nurse had the wisdom to know that loss of virginity occurs with intercourse- not by penetration with tampons that can easily be inserted without affecting the hymen (which also varies in thickness or even in presence). She knew that physical comfort matters most.

Fun fact: until 1955 nobody was sure exactly how babies were conceived. They knew it had something to do with the egg and the sperm, but exactly what occurred until science developed to the point where they could see how it all went.
@eleanorfowser4705
@eleanorfowser4705 3 года назад
I don’t remember male sperm being mentioned. I thought that you ovulated in the daytime when you were single and the egg fell through the uterus. When you got married, you magically started ovulating at night when in bed and the egg fell onto the side wall of the uterus and implanted and grew into a baby.
