There is an absolutely bonkers live version of this from MTV unplugged believe it or not. LL absolutely kills it ... He's got a live band behind him with some totally ripped white dude jamming on an acoustic guitar. You wouldn't think it would work but man does it ever work

I think LL's affinity for rock beats in a lot of his early work made this MTV Unplugged version go so well for him as he already had an ear for rock music so to speak. Not every MC can do it that way.

LL Cool J was feeling disrespected and forgotten by the rap industry and was determined to reestablish himself with this record. His Mother encouraged him by simply telling him to 'knock 'em out, Son' with his new stuff. "Don't call it a comeback!" is one of my favorite opening lines. He's saying "I'm still here, I haven't gone anywhere!" with this one, something we can all relate to.

Heyy heyy now, mom is looking too cute! GO LEX's MOMMA! LL has told the story of this song which is: He had fallen off the scene and folks were talking about how he was a goner and couldn't come back on top. He was losing faith and worried that they were right. While talking to his granny ( momma) he was expressing his worry and she began to encourage him by telling him to have faith in himself and to not listen to the nay sayers and just KNOCK THEM OUT ( with his pen) SO, that's what he did with this song. He has been on the high ride ever since. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy's, all kinds of awards and accolades. LL has influenced way too many rappers and IS a living legend and icon.

I loved watching your mother feel her youth while this jam played. When I was a senior in high school, our track team showed up at our rival high school for a meet. They were lined up doing coordinated, military style calisthenics to psyche us out. As we walked onto their field, our friend, Reggie, a strong, young African American man turned this song on his boom box at maximum volume. Reggie set the stage for us as we dominated the track meet that day.

Classic rap! Yes, Lex. Typical record scratching on turntables on old school rap music and lyrical delivery style! And samples off of older style music like funk, disco, rock, jazz, new wave, etc. It was like that back then. You know already lol. LL Cool J was so cool. A little nasty at times. '80s and '90s. Videos were cool, too. We used to blast his music in the school locker room before football practice 😆. Man I feel old. Lex had no idea he was a rapper before. Yes hes an actor now. Comes out on lots of movies and TV shows. Your mom knows LL! Brad, too.

The Story: “Mama said knock you out,” came from my grandmother. I was beefing, moaning, and griping about what people were saying with Walking With a Panther (Previous Album). I’ve always been a guy who liked to experiment and be free in the studio; I’ve never stuck to a script. And in hip-hop, people don’t always appreciate that. In other genres, people appreciate it when a guy like Prince does experimental albums and projects. I guess for whatever reason, it didn’t hit the mark like it did for some people. So my grandmother was like, “Yeah, get out there and knock ’em out.” I was like, “Yeah, knock ’em out.” So from there I remember being in my condo with the SP-1200 [sampler], my man Bob [producer Bobby “Bobcat” Erving] had the beat playing, and I was just like, “Don’t call it a comeback!” It just felt right. It was right from the spirit.

You have to put this song in context. I wanna say this is late 1980s and LL Cool J has beef with another rapper callled CoolMoDee. And this is a response to the song that the other rapper put out first talking crap about LL Cool J😜
