This is a repost from Patreon from several months ago! We LOVED this track and would love to hear more, what’s next?! Shoutout to Randy Newman for being the original writer of this song! 🙌🏻🔥
So much more with Three Dog Night: "Joy to the World"; "Black & White"; "One", "Try a Little Tenderness"; "Liar"; "An Old Fashioned Love Song"; "Shambala"; and so many more. A veritable gold mine here....
This song was composed by the great Randy Newman. It is said that he thanked Three Dog Night making this song a hit and that because of it he was going to be able to pay for his children’s college.
I love Three Dog Night, great variety. Try “Liar”, Celebrate” “Easy To Be Hard”, and “Eli’s Coming”. Great, under-rated. This is very different from most of their music.
Three Dog Night had 3 vocalists - Danny Hutton, Cory Wells & Chuck Negron. That's why many of the songs sound totally different from others, but they're all brilliant.
Chuck Negron still tours with the Happy Together Tour which includes members of the Turtles, The Cowsills and the Association. Saw them a few years ago at the local fairground. Yes, I am old af lol
@@BaseballMom523 All groups I loved and saw back in the day! We grew up when there was an EXPLOSION of the best and most varied music in the world that went on for decades and the likes of which has never been seen before or since. It's so worth it to be old now, just to have been young then.
@@ExpectTheSpanishInquisition "It's so worth it to be old now, just to have been young then." What a great way of saying that! And how true! We oldsters were so spoiled being in the middle of all the great music of the 60s and 70s. It's even cooler seeing A&A digging on all that great music.
@@scottingram7634 Totally agree. I LOVE that guys like A & A, Jamel aka Jamal, India, and a bunch of other really REALLY young people are reacting to our music and are being blown AWAY by it. I particularly like watching the black kids who've listened to nothing but hip hop their entire lives and then they put on the Beatles or The Who or Led Zeppelin or any of the other great and it's game OVER! Great music erases all divides. BTW, my first concert was Roy Orbison and my second concert was The Beatles.
"Eli's Coming'" ( live showcases vocals better), "Shambala," "Joy to the World," and "Out in the Country." Their band is top notch and, of course, the three part harmonies are second to none.
Three Dog Night was HUGE in the early 1970's! Sooooo many great songs; Shambala, Black & White, Family of Man, Eli's Coming, Joy To The World, One, Celebrate, The Show Must Go On. Sooooo many great tunes, such a fantastic band! More 3 Dog Night YES YES YES
The cool thing about Three Dog Night is that every song sounds different, and they are all great. My favorite is "Out in the Country" Before the breathing air is gone, before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime...
I have every album they made. One of my top 10 favorite groups. However, a couple of there hits I do not care for. Joy To The World and Never Been to Spain. If you hit those next you may abort the 3 Dog Night mission. A mission that requires a deeper dive than those two tracks.
@@vincentschmitt7597 Hmmm, maybe put the gavel down, dude. Nothing wrong with either of those tracks, especially in the context of "the 3 Dog Night Mission".
These guys had an insane number of hits. I'd be surprised if you've never heard at least the chorus of "Joy to the World" before. Try it next. But also, "Black and White", "Shambala" and "Never Been to Spain". Thanks! Peace from SF
Amazing band. Three lead singers. Amazing songs. "Joy To The World" "Never Been To Spain" "One" "Shambala" "Black and White" and many more. Great live version video of this on RU-vid.
The reason you think it's a supergroup: this song was written by legend Randy Newman, author of "You Can Leave Your Hat On", Short People, and countless TV and movie scores and themes. Three Dog night were covering it with Donna Summer doing uncredited backing vocals. Originally written for Eric Burdon of The Animals. Later covered by Tom Jones.
@@gettingkilt Just checked it out. Got it!!! Just like Dexy's Midnight Runner's didn't literally mean com'on Eileen but it didn't stop the teasing. But all good, I have a great Sense of humor!!!
Three Dog Night was huge back in it's day and it is hard to believe how they have faded so much over the years. Great band you should really explore more! And Three Dog Night is a old saying for a cold night. It takes three dogs around you to warm up! LOL! And yes, I have been to a few of these type of parties! LOL! Open up the window!
The term 3 dog night originated with aboriginal Australians which caused some to think they were an Australian group. Not so. I think a girlfriend told them about the term but not sure.
@@kens32052 I was just a little kid when they hit their stride and I remember this band and Tom Jones being all the rage with my aunts and uncles back then. My parents where into more traditional music back then.
I love their very bluesy sound. For more check out “Easy to be Hard” “Try a Little Tenderness” and “Out in the Country”! I also like the feeling of the unfinished ending missing that last note.
Written by Randy Newman for Eric Burdon of the Animals, 1966. The Burdon version didn't really go anywhere. It was this version from 1970 that became the worldwide hit.
“Shambala” and “One” are a must hear. “Black and White” is also brilliant. I can’t believe they are not in the R &R Hall of fame. As much as I think it’s bullshit.
Someone probably mentioned this, but this song was one of the first well known hits composed by the great Randy Newman, master of the sardonic lyric... such as You Can Leave Your Hat On.
Their song "Shambala" was in Joe Dirt, when he got stoned from the fumigation in the tented house. Everybody has great suggestions. Pick one and groove. Have a great day, guys.
To anyone watching this _ please watch or listen to Sir Tom Jones and the Stereophonics' version of this. You'll see that a guy who was in his 70's when he recorded it still has an amazing voice. Grey power!
This band was huge in the late 60s and early 70s saw them in 68 or 69 I can't remember exactly you know what Arlo Guthrie said if you remember the 60s you weren't there great reaction guys
I saw them in 1987. I was traveling down A1A near Cape Canaveral. I passed a beach side Holiday Inn. The marque out front said "Now Appearing: Three Dog Night" So weird, watching a group I grew up with playing in a bar at a Holiday Inn.
It was written by Randy Newman. I've only ever heard one or two originals from Three Dog Night (on an anthology album). They took other's works and made them their own. A great example is Harry Nilsson's "One"
You are right that they had a number of singles I saw them a number of times live, and they were always the warm up band to the headliners at festivals, as I recall, so because they had less time to play, they just fired about 7 or 8 hits at everyone, and the crowd loved them.
The next songs are my favorite by Three Dog Night. "Liar" (originally done by Argent), "Shambala, The Show Must Go On,The Family of Man,Old Fashioned Love Song" etc.
The identity of Three Dog Night tended to be tied to their three fantastic lead singers. Overlooked was that absolutely incredible 4-piece band that worked behind them and contributed the instrumental arrangements. They covered some truly fantastic songs like this one by Randy Newman and made them their own.
When I was younger I kind of looked down on Three Dog Night because they didn’t write their own music like the bands/artists I admired the most. I’ve since come to appreciate the talents and creative output of many artists who interpret the songs of others. Three Dog Night certainly had many great performances in their time and they have stood the test of time.
the breakdown at 2:49 is my favorite part of the entire song. and i LOVE this song. but man, that breakdown with all their voices overlapping is just 'chef's kiss.'
These guys were a hit machine. Unbelievable catalog of some of the greatest pop songs ever. Joy to the World, Shambala, Out in the Country, so many more. For a period of maybe three years in the early 70s, they had to be close to the most popular band in the world.
I saw them live in the late 80's they were still great. Never Been To Spain, Shambala, Old Fashioned Love Song are three good ones to follow up this with.
Never Been To Spain * Joy To The World * * - both written by the great Hoyt Axton Shambala Let Me Serenade You You really can't go wrong with these guys. There may be songs that don't click with you, but you'll still appreciate the performance.
Three Dog Night had a string of cool hits in the 70s; check out "Shambala", "One" (which was written by Harry Nilsson, whose name you might've heard around), "Never Been to Spain", and "Old Fashioned Love Song".
Enjoyed the review guys! A childhood favorite of mine from the 70s. I’d have to say my fav Three Dog Night track is “Out In The Country”. Thanks for the vid!
LOL YES !! Three Dog Night , HUGELY POPULAR back in my day 😆 THIS SONG was one of the most popular songs when it came out !! A timeless beauty babeee LOL 💜
Liar is my favorite TDN song, which is a remake of Argent's 1970 song. They did a lot of covers, including what you just heard, and many of them were far bigger (charting/sales) than the originals.
Actually these guys are the ultimate garage band. And they are relatively unknown as individual musicians. They have a lot of hits (all singles & b-sides, most of which are covers that are more well known than the originals: One (is the loneliest number), Never Been to Spain, Liar, Joy to the World, Try a Little Tenderness, and many more.
Guys, there's "One" song of theirs you really need to react to. It's "One" of the best songs of 1969, and definitely "One" of Three Dog Night's best songs overall. I bet I'm not the only "One" on here who thinks so
Written by Nilsson. I'll guarantee they do Joy to the World next, which is not one of my favorites, because it's on the radio constantly. Back you on this one. Good song
@@allisonreed7682 I agree Nilsson should be covered. Leon Russell should be covered, lots of them...however, someone must have their ears, because we hear the same artists being covered over and over and they won't listen to people that have had some great suggestions.
They dominated the late sixties into the early seventies with quite a few huge and memorable hits, likeJoy to the World,Never Been To Spain, and Shambala!👍🏻❤️☮️🎤🎤🎤 3 lead singers with incredible voices!
I got to see all the great bands in the early'70s, The Who, Led by Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Traffic, etc. I did see Three Dog Night live in concert and they were terrific. They were no joke. They rocked.
