Hi. I fitted a 993 RS wheel to my 996 and came across the very same issue. I eventually solved it by running a cable from the original horn earth and soldering it to the collar/bracket that secures the switch gear onto the column. I can't claim credit for this fix as I got some great help off the 911 forum.

Thanks David, and yes I am going down a similar route. Testing with my multi-meter I have a good earthing point where you suggest.

I , too, ride momo prototipo. love it. however, I have been eyeing california, indy, grand prix (as I love the wood feel). The only thing I do differently to most folks is that I install a horn button elsewhere to avoid cable snap when turning.

Another option recently suggested to me is the NRG hub that retains the clock spring - it's a bit bulkier than the Momo to cover the clock spring but might be just what you need
@matthewliavaa9490
@matthewliavaa9490 3 года назад
@@TheThrottleCable this seems like the best option. Because it would solve the problem of the washer/spacer and the horn wouldn’t it?
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable 3 года назад
I would say it’s an alternative option rather than a better option - they both have their merits. The NRG solution certainly makes installing simple and would make swapping between a standard and aftermarket wheel quicker 👍

Great review, I believe you’ve had some miles covered after your mod07 being fitted. Does the dish offset causing any difficulty reaching wipers/indicators controls in daily use?
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable 3 года назад
thank you! It takes a little getting used too, as the reach is certainly longer - but after a while you just get used to the new position and it becomes normal again. It's no problem. The one thing i would recommend is an eccentric spacer as it lifts the wheel to better see the dials (the original Porsche wheel is eccentric spaced) - note it does add about 15mm to the reach.

Thanks a lot man. Helped me tremendously. So, you don't reinstall the clock spring?
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable 2 года назад
No worries Seamus! No clock spring in this setup; the clock spring is the modern way of transferring the positive and negative to anything electrical on the steering wheel - e.g. horn / airbag. With this modification we are going old school with the positive contact being made by the copper slip ring and the negative being to chassis via the steering column 👍 If you want to keep the clock spring NRG have a neat hub solution that incorporates it.

Just saw the washer, what type of washer was it? Hi, I see this phrase, "996 and Boxster required a washer for the nut to properly tighten" , but no one explains what kind of washer or provides instructions. If you have any advice on this it would be greatly appreciated
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable 3 года назад
Look at 16:30. This comes as part of the momo kit; it’s needed as the thread on the column are not deep enough for the momo hub and therefore this packs out/spaces the nut far enough to be on the threads. Its approx 10mm tall.

@TheThrottleCable

@TheThrottleCable

It could be that 3/4 turn is the only spot your steering column has a good earth and hence the horn sounds as the circuit is complete - check my steering column earth video see if that helps 👍

Hi thanks for the video... i did everything you said but everytime i connect the 2 connectors the horn goes off what could be the problem?
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable 3 года назад
The live side of the circuit just needs an earth to sound - e.g. if it touches the chassis it will sound. If you connect the two wires you complete the circuit and the horn will go off. The horn button breaks the circuit and only when you press it, should it connect the circuit to sound the horn. So two ideas - you could have introduced an earth by accident; or your horn button is in a closed position. Have you checked with a multimeter?

How have you found the Mod.07 itself? I need to replace the wheel on my modified 2nd gen Surf, it has a Momo installed but the spacer is too short and it used to be suede but now it's a crumbling mess because a previous owner put a suede wheel on a vehicle used for actual off-roading. I'm looking at the leather version like this one so I can use the existing spacer and get some room between the wheel and the wiper/indicator stalks.
@TheThrottleCable
@TheThrottleCable Год назад
I love it; I used it first without an eccentric spacer which meant losing the top of the dials. With the spacer it’s perfect. It also has great reach - the dish of the wheel brings it closer than stock.
@KiwiPokerPlayer
@KiwiPokerPlayer Год назад
@@TheThrottleCable Oh yes, you're right! I didn't think of better visibility of the dials. I can't see all of mine either the way it's configured since the dish is around 40mm. A deeper dish will help. Thanks for the reply; I think I'm sold.
