Yes, solid mounts are like magic in any 911 of any generation. Especially if you're beyond factory horsepower, they make a big difference in performance because more power gets to the wheels instead of wasting it on drivetrain flex.
I've done 4 of those 5 mods, albeit split between my 996 and 986! H&R springs, GT3 style buckets, 993 RS style engine mounts, upgraded SS exhaust. Sweet.
Different mods for me but some of those 5 may happen in the future! I currently have MO30 suspension (came with the car and replaced with same), RS engine mounts, RS gearbox mount, 3rd rad, deep sump, low temp thermostat and other stuff I've forgotten (Dansk boxes, resonator blocked off).. Suspension is low enough with the deep sump... I quite like my seats and am not sure about the Recaro - I do a few road trips.
Interesting to see how much your aero wing appears to move under power. Mines in the default position and seems to not move. Might just be the video rendering. Great mods. Hopefully see you at a car meet, maybe Megaphonics or beaulieu
The wing does have some deflection at full rake - but I think what you can see there is the video rendering. It’s definitely more secure at the default setting though. I will try to get to Beaulieu again this year - I enjoyed it last time 👍
Nice choices to upgrade your car. I must have expensive taste. If I was going to spec a current GT3 as a road and occasional track day car, i'd do three upgrades. I'd replace the standard aluminium rims with BBS Fi-R forged magnesium wheels, upgrade to either a DSC Sport Active RT or KW Clubsport 3-way suspension kit, and Kline Inconel exhaust. But not cheap.
Really enjoying your videos, on the fence with getting RSS mounts as I have a convertible and not sure what the NVH would be, (your thoughts welcome) but tempted by your raves and detailed analysis. Mine's a daily driver (1999 996 C2 3.6) I already did coilovers and agree suspension is a great mod, have Fister exhaust which was super cheap and the sound is stunning. 997 shift upgrade as well. Brakes as number one was a fun surprise! Want to get 997 hardback sport seats. Thx.
Ideally if you can get a ride out in a car with RSS mounts it should make your decision easy. I struggle to notice any difference in NVH. If you’re concerned even refreshing the factory mounts if they are worn, like for like, would make an improvement. 👍
#5 I did the full Ohlins #4 Pass. I like my regular power seats, but yes, I do have to cinch my seat belt to stay in lol #3 couldn’t agree more. And RSS is a great company #2 I did a full exhaust and I think headers and cats are THE most important. And I also agree an X pipe is not great for this car. #1 Is the last item on my list. But I’m aiming for larger rotors and a 997 GT3 master cylinder. Good list, seriously.
I went full topgear headers, 200,cell xpipe cats, and valved mufflers. I'm OK with losing a bit down low, if that is an actual thing, I'm just about the wail of the flat 6. I'm staying stock intake, for now. Interested. In the evoms at some point, as it seems to use the proper oem air way. Anyway, the new exhaust goes in next week. Cant wait. At some point I would like sport seats and ohlins. But I'm in no rush. The exhaust wail I couldn't wait any more. Selfish of me, but oh well.
Great video, thanks! Very interested in your #1 as I've always been a little disappointed in my car's braking. Do you think it's your pad or discs that make it squeal? My top 3 so far are: 1. PSE retrofit, 2. Numeric Racing shifter, 3. RSS mounts. I like the centre console delete too.
I did the top gear mild sport exhausts, design 911 semi solid engine mounts, the gear knob, and steering wheel conversion. I will do the brakes next as that’s the weakest part of the car’s performance in my opinion. They stop but too wooden 👍
Cool video! Great car. Is it an early 996 without Secondary Airpump or you deleted it? Btw I have a decat x-pipe, headers and sport exhaust. I have the feeling the headers compensate the drop in torque of the decat x-pipe a bit. Also combined it with a chip tuning. Unfortunately mine is now already 3 weeks gone for an engine rebuild because of bore scoring. 2-3 more weeks to go before I can enjoy it again 😀 Take care and thanks for great content!
The pump - it’s a uk car so we don’t require it - I think that was just for old USA emission regulations, but I’m not 100% on that. I might also end up doing headers myself, but that’s more an indulgence than a necessity for me right now 😁 Hope the rebuild goes well! 👍
@@TheThrottleCable thanks for your reply!! The pump is not on early models with the cable throttle if I’m correct. I also have an early model without airpump (German car). The headers is worth it. Also did it on other cars (BMW E30 and E39). It really gives a nice sound in higher RPMs
Amazing car you have. I just had the engine rebuilt on my 996 with throttle cable. The engine builder recommended me to use 10W60 oil. I only drive in summer with temperatures around 25-35 degrees. What would you recommend for oil weight? Thanks!!
Ok that’s a rabbit warren of a conversation! It depends on your cars age, milage, condition etc. In older high milage engines as parts wear, using a heavier base weight oil might be advantageous as it can improve oil pressure and help protect the engine. FYI Porsche recommends 10w60 for the old 911 3.0, for the 996 they now recommend 5w50👍
Two things, prompted by the engine mounts. First, do they harshen up the ride, add more drone to the cabin? Second, what did you do to delete the secondary air injection pump? I too have the H&R lowering springs and based my final decision to do so on your video about them, so thanks there buddy! I have FabSpeed Supercup exhaust which generate a fair amount of drone around 3k rpm while the windows are closed.
Hi, take a look at the custom wheels video - all the detail is there and the reasons for the spec. There are several variables so you may decide you want to tweak something different. Cheers
Thanks Rob, i just looked and could not find the wheels video. Is that one still listed, and if so what is it entitled? Many thanks, Adam @@TheThrottleCable
Never heard this feedback before 🥔; i know it’s not possible to diagnose your problem now but I assume it more likely the dampers were shot, rather than the spring being at fault. However, switching all components over to KW V3 setup is a mighty fine way to fix it!
@@TheThrottleCable If you switch the Srings to H&R you will need The B8 Bilstein Dampers because The original are too long. and you get the entire Shocks into your car and your bones. So my Mechanic told me My Setup is Perfect for Hockenheim or Silverstone. But for the Nurburgring is it already much too Hard. I Drove some time ago a 996 with a KW V3 and it was Absuletely Awesome. By the way i love your Videos theyre Awesome!
You just unscrew the two hex bolts on the retaining brackets either side underneath the spoiler. Then you hinge the spoiler up to change the position of those same retaining brackets. The retaining brackets use an additional fastener only on their lowest setting position 1 (put that fastener somewhere safe if you’re moving to position 2 or 3). 👍
Good question and I need to give it more thought. I’m running original spec oil for moderate climates; 0w40 changed out annually with no noticeable oil consumption . My car is relatively low milage at 70k miles and always garaged so never truly had a ‘cold climate’ start. Even so I would start to consider going up to 5w40 or 10w50 for higher milage
I always went to Porsche dealer to do oil changes on my 996. However, I stoped doing that because they still use the 0W40. I moved countries from cold climate to hot climate. Since I only drive the car in summer and the summers are crazy hot here, I will stick to 5W50 once my engine rebuild is finished. You probably noticed, but Porsche is now selling the 5W50 as recommended for 996 in their ‘classic’ product range
