A quick overview of the 1960 to 1983 module drive vacuum tube filament transformers and voltage conversion. The internet is filled with those that chose to degrade the machine with drive replacements, I am not one of them.

the electrics are a bit beyond me but thanks for taking the time to explain it all

Yes, there are 88 wires in this one!

I see more and more of the 10EE for sale. Prices are all over the place, mostly on the high side for sure. Thanks again for sharing.
@deedeeindustrialsuperprecision
That has always been the situation.

Thanks so much for all the great content! I'm loving and appreciating all the education offered on your channel. Any thoughts about the Round Dial Monarch 10EEs? Specifically the motor-generator models from the early 1940s?
@deedeeindustrialsuperprecision
The motor generator machines work well with their huge frame 3hp spindle motor with back gear for low speeds easily will remove 1/4" off the diameter of 2" 4140 steel per pass using negative rake carbide inserts. The older style machine has an advantage cutting metric threads using change gears on the end train because the gear area is open instead of enclosed on later machines making changes harder having to used gears with fine pitch to fit in on later models. There were two styles of Reliance MG drives in those years the earlier MG was all inline, the later had the exciter belt driven from the MG unit. The exciter being a small generator that provides power to both spindle motor and generator fields, along with the power for directional switches. Very easy to trouble shoot robust system used in elevators. The spindle action is close to the same as the more modern factory drives, it lacks the spindle speed/load compensation circuitry but uses the momentum of the large armature in the spindle motor effectively. Thanks for tuning in!

Great demo and explanation of the system. Even though I don't have a 10 EE I agree with the OEM system. I relate a lot of these YOU Tube Wizards to Hot Rod magazines. Many of the magazine articles are written by those who should be made to sit on the bench. The articles are designed to sell the latest junk. Example is high lift camshafts that have such terrible low-end torque that they can't propel the vehicle at slow speeds. Yet they sell millions of dollars' worth of this stuff to the inexperienced

The situation with this machine is those wizzards come and go and the pathed together drives just do not last. The problem not understood is lathes have a high starting load with heavy chucks and other loads. the way this machine cuts screw threads is mostly in rapid starting and stopping causing heat build up that solid state drives fail to handle well.

Tell you what dee dee from a line shaft drive to that set up it's like one end of the spectrum to the other. I think I can just about manage the line shaft, with just one hat on. Interesting technology. Tony

These machines take considerable time to just warm up, making planning the work time and adding the cost of cycling the machine. The old gear head lathe is much friendlier.

Hi dee dee a really interesting and informative video as always. Are the electrical tubes and other components still readily available for these wonderful machines. We dont see many Monarchs over here in the UK. I think a few may have come out of the airforce bases over here over the years. Looking forward to seeing the expansion of your shop to accommodate the the drill and lathe. Keep up the good work regards Paul
