Bringing home my new to me 1955 Monarch series 61 16x78 Lathe.
18.5 inch swing, Original 10 HP motor, Rapid Traverse on the Carriage.
Also has the spring loaded pin that connects the tailstock to the carriage
for fast movement of the tailstock.

Is that the way it is in the States? Five years ago that may have been how it was here in the UK , but with the slowdown in China and them not wanting every piece of scrap iron in the world in the past few years, scrappers are not going to want to pay over the odds for say 10000lbs of iron. They know what the price is on a day to day basis and if you offer say 50 dollars over what they want to pay to turn a profit they're going to pull out at the profit line, so 50 bucks gets you the lathe in my opinion.

You got her for $400....... I nearly fainted hearing that, as far as I know you can't get a 10EE for less than $10k these days. $400 is about £300 for me here in the UK. I can't get a tiny little cheap chinesium bench lathe for that.... and you got a Monarch, that, admittedly needs some work for the price of a cheap and basic beginners lathe. You absolutely got a bargain there PS I don't have a workshop, or anything like a mill or lathe. But it is one of my goals to have a hobby shop to sate my desire to make stuff. A lathe that big is way beyond my desires or potential needs but there is just something about old iron that screams to me "fix me! " ....and I can't help but say "no problem hon, I'll do just that". Can't wait to see how she's comes back alive under your care.

Look on craiglist, you'll see them pop up once and a wile really cheap. If I had the room I'd but a small one and bridgport As well as a small saw just to make stuff for my own use and or prototype stuff and or make tools. I choose woodworking but a working machine shop works too. I think some of the lathes they had in highschools would be big enough im not looking to do production work. Did enough of that in a machine shop. We didn't have a mill in school so its a tool id need to learn But for metal and woodworking it would come in handy. Yes I mill wood on it why not? We milled plastics on them in the shop almost every material.

Question: how did you get the permits for your garage shop, most states say that a shop can only be no bigger than 10x20 feet without a permit. Any concerns about noise from your neighbors. Also what thickness of concrete and what type did you pour for the floor? I saw somewhere that six inches are necessary for industrial applications. Beautiful machines btw. Good video

Trust me a new coat of paint dosnt make it run better. The hole over the gearbox might have bee for some kind of chuck hoist. Did the shop have jib crains? @@OldIronMachineWorks Maybe he stuck the chuck key in it or used it to change gears after the arm came off the lever. My uncle used to buy that stuff at auctions all the time to clean up paint and sell. He got a big collection of manual machines but we also had a lot of cncs back then you programed them with tape. Now you plug in cad programs. The machine does all the math. Next versions will butter your toast and bring you coffee I only ran jobs someone else set up for me. But I learned what I did know in high school shop class. They call that big lathe a tool room model? Well we did have bigger lathes but that one was not tiny by any stretch im going to bet the 4 jaw chuck weights 400 lbs. Thats a pretty good size lathe. Id like to have one 1/4 its size. That and a mill. They would come in handy woodworking. Yes thats right. Just think what you can make with metal steel and electronics. Ask my wife she's always batching about all the clutter. Omg and just go looking for one item! Been all over the house looking for a soldering iron thats 15 watt. I found the small one it won't work for what I'm doing. Won't get hot enough.

That lathe has some years of abuse on it, but really its just dirty. Clean it off you'll find its in really good shape. My uncle had us wash the machines in kerosene all the time using a spray hose, it got the crud off but it also sent the chips up into the way wipes past the seals . Id say comming out of a production shop its a good find. Why the hell would you scrap this shit if it runs? Thats just stupidity.
