I'm a metal head by trade, however, my father who grew played guitar in the 40's and 50's, loved Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Tony Mattola. I know that someone did in fact know that it was "Misty", which was one of my dad's favorite pieces and taught it to me too! Thanks Phil for sitting in for my pop!

Being a VERY lucky owner of a 1955 Super 400 CES (Gibson shipped 16 of these in 1955!), I can attest, this instrument is unquestionably one of the finest, most versatile guitars ever made. Plays like butter. Killer, full tone. Every note/nuance rings clear as a bell. Great for just about any genre of music (except hard rock shredders.) Really awesome for Jump Blues/ Swing stuff. Found/bought it on EBAY! +/-15 yrs ago! No other guitar comes close. Had been looking for one for 10 years. Anyone who has one ain't selling. I understand completely. Irreplaceable.

The tune you were playing is called "Misty" It's been performed by many artists but the most popular version was done by Johnny Mathis.

When you said that you were going to amaze yourself with something you learned way back when, I wasn't expecting an awesome Misty chord melody. HELL YEA

This guitar actually sounds pretty good when doing hard rock. Didn't expect it to be a hard rock guitar.

In my experience hollowbodies/semihollowbodies handle distortion VERY well. Sometimes better than solidbodies. It's just the feedback that makes them a bit of a pain.
@tedseb7726
@tedseb7726 Год назад
@@themodernguitarist semi hollows don’t have as much of a feedback issue with the center block and especially if you have a good set of humbuckers. But if an issue arose you could always tape off the f-holes if you want an angry musicians boot stuck in your f hole

@MusicMan44144 I love bouzouki and rebetika music. My best friend is Greek and he always used to listen to rebetika music when we were driving around in his car in South Africa and I liked a lot of it. My favorite song was O kapetanakis. Greetings from Hungary.

Misty was written by the inimitable Erroll Garner, a virtuoso jazz pianist. The song has been covered as much as any song in history. Erroll wrote it on a plane while staring out the window. Said it came to him in 10 minutes. A beautiful song not really done justice by Phil X, which shows that jazz is not for fooling around. As great as Phil is, playing songs with lots of moving harmony needs to be studied and practiced.

When Phil rocks out on these guitars (4:16) he's demonstrating what they sound like when they are played and that they *can* be played. Banging on strings has very little effect on a guitar. He's not abusing or even being rough with them. He's letting them live.

Yo Phil, amazing playing dude, keep the way of the guitar alive! You should try playing some more darker stuff to show how mean the guitar can go from time to time. You've been doing very well, but I'd like to hear some stuff like Black Sabbath, Godsmack, Disturbed and other great metal bands. Keep it going Phil, keep rocking, and I'll keep watching. PHIL X!

Would it still be a treasured Gibson Super 400 CES after 60 years of this Rockin' or should I suggest Wrekin' playing? Great playing tho! I suppose that's why we have so many great guitars for different styles and I have a small selection here for our many moods of playing.

If i'm not mistaken, it's law that anyone who plays one of these guitars has to wear a black leather Elvis suit. So, by my reckoning, the 'unit' also known as 'Phil' (Model X.0) is therefore breaking the law. Has anyone noticed that he has no reflection?

All these poor little jazz box guys... Only their genre can be played on such an instrument? Is that what the Jazz community is now? Saggy old sad sacks with self righteous opinions that mean more than others? I mean, it’s been a while since I’ve personally played with Jazz musicians and they were some cool cats. All these comment section Jazz holes need to get out more... 😉😘

Sounds like a real good guitar. Great demo, I have to admit though that sometimes when you kick in the distortion or overdrive like at 7:00 I think you might start playing "Playground" by XTC. I might have to request that song some time.
