It's time to talk about the realities of being a youtuber! I talk about several things in this video, but I know that money is probably the most interesting (and hidden) thing, so I go over all the details on that, as well as why creators might pivot their content and why hate comments can be a bigger deal than you might expect. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Chapters

01:00 - Money (monetization)
03:11 - Money (how you make money)
03:40 - Money (I probably make less than others)
06:21 - Money (number time, baby!)
15:45 - Money (process/hours)
17:47 - How/why creators choose content
21:44 - Hate comments
28:45 - A thank you

Thank you for the kindest comments imaginable, I've been shocked and heartened by all the kind words 🥹 I want to clarify that I'm doing fine, I promise! The new way I interact with comments has helped me feel less burdened by the worst parts of the internet. I'm grateful for you and that you watch any of my videos and make it possible for this hobby to be so fulfilling. Thank you!

I just want to say thank you for making such an informative videos. A lot of people want to make RU-vid videos and then they get burnt out and all . The perception of them like not being hardworkers or putting in the time is wrong. It's just that they're not prepared for the cesspool that is the internet and the alligator that is the algorithm. This has helped me understand why my favourite creators do what they do and also what I may want to be ready for if ( that's a biggg if now) I ever do become a content creator. If you've read till here, thank you. BTw this is the first video I've watched of your channel and I'm gonna subscribe

Thank you for the transparency video! I can't emphasize highly enough how truthful and relatable the hate comments portion is. I've wanted to make this video for a while now, but never seem to find the energy for it. But yeah, it is frankly astounding the number of hate comments we do get, most of them unseen by viewers, just for talking about books. The name-calling, the racial slurs, the accusations, the assumptions out of thin air. It truly makes me wonder why people are so hateful sometimes. And as you said, it's not even on a controversial video. Sometimes it's just a book haul or even a TBR video. Someone once told me, that after 10k subs, you will see the hate comments starting to come in. And that statement couldn't be more true. For what it's worth, I love your videos. I think they are incredible. Just like this one. :)

I'm glad we can all agree on it, but it's also depressing seeing all of the content creators being like "YEAH! I'm so grateful you are in our community Petrik!

The least we can do is spend 5-15 seconds to hit skip ad for the hours and hours you put into your channel.

I agree, the same goes with sponsors. I think we all realize content creators don’t often use the products etc. and it’s not a personal endorsement. While ads and sponsors are a bit annoying the monetary benefit to the content creator makes them worthwhile, even from the perspective of a viewer.

Thanks for making this! As a content creator myself, I very much relate to your sentiment of thinking you'd be okay with a few hate comments here and there, then turning out to be more sensitive to them than you thought. My channel is still small, but ever since it's started to get some modicum of attention, I've been surprised by the way my body has reacted to getting comments at times, even with all my attempts to persuade myself they don't matter. I remember the first time one of my videos skyrocketed to like 70,000 views out of nowhere - back when I still had only a couple hundred subscribers - and I would sometimes find myself shaking uncontrollably because I just kept thinking about the comments that were rolling in, nonstop, every hour of the day. My reaction took me completely by surprise, as much as the video blowing up did. I don't think there's anything I could have done to prepare myself for it. And nowadays, even though I've gotten used to the constant influx of comments, I still fixate on the negative ones over all the positives ones, and spend nights tossing and turning wondering if I've done something horrible. Obviously there are plenty of things worse, but it's such a bizarre experience and it's hard to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it themselves. Anyway, really appreciated your honesty here!

oh my gosh YES. YES YES YES! I think it's just the shock of it. When you go to your comment section, you just never know when you are going to be hit out of the blue with something. And then when you get the same sort of nasty comment over and over again in the same video...it's so exhausting. And you DO fixate! And you think "i'll explain myself BETTER next time!" and then someone comments "why do you over explain yourself so much" ☠ It's a never-ending cycle.

Thanks for this. I'm just a viewer with no interest in ever being a creator. As such I've never put any brain power into how content actually gets to my screen. Even stupid stuff like how much a good camera costs, never really considered any of that, so thanks for mentioning the costs to involved. It gives me appreciation for all the content I watch and what it actually takes behind the scenes. For many years I've written as a hobby, mostly for myself and a few friend/writers. I always had it in the back of my head that someday I'd like to try to publish something and share it with the world. That urge has been completely snuffed out at this point. The ease in which people can just pour on the hate and negativity, it's just not ever going to be worth it for me. I'm glad you do this and hope you keep at it. Obviously I’m seeing this video months after it was made. Still, I wanted to comment. Bookborn, you are one of the most intelligent book tubers I follow-there’s a logic and a method to the way you approach any topic you undertake that is much appreciated by this viewer any way. You give data. You organize that data and inspect it. You look at things from several perspectives. Some of this comes from just being thorough. For example, you don’t just tell us how much you make month to month or year to year. Like an accountant you also tell us how much you spent and then how many hours were involved in this video or that one. And then, having explained that you spend as much time on your videos as many people spend in doing their jobs, you point out that you are not producing these videos in order to make a living. It’s a hobby. However, you go on, many people are in fact trying to make a livable income from RU-vid, and so these issues matter. The way you present your content here seems obvious in the context of your topic. But I know, and you know, and anyone who spends any time watching RU-vid knows that most creators don’t operate this way. So thank you. [New paragraph] I should say that I came to your channel through seeing you interviewed on another book tuber’s channel. I’m not a particular fan of fantasy. But I am a fan of books, and you discuss all things book related in such an interesting way. I love it when you do research and present data. You should maybe write a book. You have the mindset

I don't necessarily know if that's even RU-vids fault, tbh - their algorithms/AI that helps moderate that stuff takes time at such a large scale. Love your honesty/transparency/general-no-BS as always Bookborn 😄 I avoided mid-roll ads in my videos for the same reasons (I write Ambient music for studying and sleeping so not ideal to wake people up in the middle 😂) I ended up ticking that box and realised I could manually place just one mid-roll ad at the verrrrry end of the video (right before the post-vid ad would show up) I figured most people would click away by that point, but for the audience binge-listening to my vids on a playlist, it would help me get a few extra bucks! I’m not sure if that’s something you’d want on your channel but could be worth trying it to see if your RPM goes up at all 🧐 Keep up the great work as always!!

Thank you so much for your transparency! I definitely believe that you deal with some terribly hateful comments - I used to be part of a number of Wheel of Time groups, and once the show came out they almost all turned into cesspools. I went from having light hearted chats with fellow book fans to getting absolutely ripped apart for any perspective I offered - with pretty much any criticism of the show resulting in calling me out for being a cis straight white male who was clearly homophonic, racist, a bigot, etc. It was even group leaders saying these things a fair portion of the time. And even the slightest praise resulted in being told I wasn't a fan of the books, I was a snowflake pushing a woke agenda. These conversations were with people I had once considered friends too - so I can only imagine how much worse it is for the general anonymity of RU-vid accounts. And, just because I feel the need to justify myself -I started reading the books when I was a teen in the very early 2000s. I chose to get into the film industry over a decade ago in hopes of being part of the team that brought the books to the small screen (something I saw as an inevitability). I'm now a 10+ year veteran in the film industry - primarily as a vfx artist and supervisor, but also having written scripts, done camera work, helped as an AD, scriptie, gaffer, grip, worked as a professional photographer for a while, and a copy and content editor (for novels and scripts). I've worked on indie projects, major blockbusters, installation projects, virtual reality, corporate videos, and everything in between. I've done deep breakdowns of every book, how to adapt it in either 8 or 10 episode seasons (it would require 9-10 seasons depending on the length of the season), and those are all with typical production limitations taken into account, working through how to combine or cut characters, scenes, locations, etc. I've done vfx tests for different things from the books. But despite those years of investment, I was shunned by group leaders and new fans alike without any consideration to my criticism or praise - just because I presented an idea they didn't already agree with. Getting back to the point - I love that you have an honest look at the financial and time investment (and reward) of getting into RU-vid! I've been considering starting up a podcast, and doing some videos that would simplify and make more easily accessible my 240 page deep dive into season 1 - and this gives me a great starting point to work from. I'm glad you are filtering those horrible comments, and taking care of your mental health - and not letting it dissuade you from continuing on your video content creation journey! I love watching your videos, so keep em coming. 😊
@Bookborn
@Bookborn 4 месяца назад
Asking for a friend, where would I find this 240 page deep dive 👀 I would LOVE to read something like this with your extensive background in the actual industry! But yeah, the WoT fandom kind of imploded with the show, it sucked. I keep trying to tell people, this isn't the WoT fandom I used to know - the one that could take almost any criticism agains the books and be like "oh yeah we get it!" and just...roll with it, have fun, discuss it. I'm hoping it'll die down eventually and go back to what it was...

@@Bookborn I had everything broken down by episode, then an "interesting data" one too. I eventually had another RU-vidr request a chance to read through it, but she had only read through the first two books - so I refined it down into a single document that cut any of my commentary that included spoilers beyond book 2. It's open for anyone to comment, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. I will say, I didn't critique the VFX, the editing, the camera work, or the quality of the first season as an adaptation. I only critiqued the consistency of the story itself as a standalone work. I only brought up the books when I thought it bizarre that they changed things from the books for no apparent reason (again, from a filmmaker's perspective). docs.google.com/document/d/1mHB01EwiGQ28o-Mh3xbBM1vjVHqsopeYbkHiKry_WQU/edit?usp=sharing

This is a really interesting video. Appreciate the transparency about the finances, because that's certainly a topic that people often seem to shy away from. The mid-roll ad thing isn't something I've ever thought about, but it makes sense that it would be such a jump. As for the hate comment thing, it's sadly unsurprising, but as you noted, it's definitely not just being "thin skinned" or "too sensitive". Pretty much every creator who I've ever heard talk about has said that no matter how thick your shell is 99% of the time, eventually there's going to be that 1% of the time where you see a negative comment that just pierces right through. Maybe it's a comment that unknowingly strikes right on something you're already upset about, maybe it's so vile even above-and-beyond, or maybe it just happens on an already crappy day where you're already a bit down.

You really nailed it, lol. Like sometimes someone writes something that just strikes right through to an insecurity or you're just having a day where it is just the straw that broke the camels back.

This was super cool of you to share. As a BookTube channel coming up on 10k subs I found a lot of these experiences relatable. A way that I found helpful to think about comments was this: If I saw a film had 98% on rotten tomatoes I would think that was amazing, so there’s no need for me to be bothered by 2% of the comments.
@Bookborn
@Bookborn 4 месяца назад
I try to think of it that way, but somehow when that 2% is directed at you, it feels different 🤣

Shockingly little money for what is (effectively) a professional quality review show. It's tough, bc "free content" is often monetised through means that creative people are uncomfortable with... but it is rather perverse that people offering original or transformative works are often making substantially less than other, more exploitative, entertainment. I can only be thankful you enjoy it as a hobby, and remain thoughtful and engaged with your comments section despite the challenges we pose (I do not absolve myself from being an argumentative bugger, even if I never speak with malice merely with passion) Responses from content creators really do mean a lot, but REALLY don't kill yourself over it. Your content is the important part! Shared joy can't really be assigned a value, but "priceless" is near enough the truth.

I've been on booktube for about a year. Finding time to present myself coherently is a challenge and i'm at the point where i've decided to give up on the algorithm in order put out videos I care about. And I have decided to check the analytics once a week... i have a very, very small channel and I still try to reply to most of my comments because i'm only dealing with maybe a dozen or a few dozen per video, but i'm also shocked at the level the comments stoop to. Rest assured, you are not an idiot! You're very good at this, and you've chosen a very difficult hobby! Thanks for this video!
@Bookborn
@Bookborn 4 месяца назад
Yeah, at some point I had to ask...what do I want to make content about? What am I passionate about? And if it works with the algo, all the better, but ultimately I don't want to be stuck making content I don't care about because...that would defeat the purpose of the hobby lol. Good luck in your youtube journey!

Thank you for this video and perfect timing! As I just made the requirements for monetization. As of now, I did not add mid-roll ads (and not sure if I ever will), as I'm just too new. (Personally, I think you earned to run them, especially after watching this, but that is of course up to you). I've been pretty lucky with hateful comments so far...a couple of criticisms pop in here and there, nothing compared to what you showed us. I do have a couple of people trolling my channel just to click the thumbs down on every one of my videos though. Haha. -Cheers and keep up the amazing content!

Fascinating video. As someone in the finance field I love videos like these. Its crazy to me that you barely made a profit in 2021 and 2022. I am glad 2023 you saw a good increase in profits. Lets hope 2024 the trend continues. Though It is always surprised me you have never had a Patreon (or even a discord), but I respect you desire for growth and just doing this for fun.
