the monkees presents wouldve been the double if peter had stayed with the group. the monkees being a collective where each had their own sound was kinda where those last few albums were at- wouldve loved to have seen it in full effect, the boys never really reached their full potential after the split
Just wanted you all to know that the reason that The Monkees Present was not a double album was that their record label, Colgems , decided on that. Due to, they felt, was a decline in the bands popularity. Therefore, they weren't going to spend money on a proposed double album, that they felt wouldn't sell. It wasn't because Peter had left the group, as previously mentioned. Just wanted to let this fact be known and set the record straight. 😊. 9/29/23.
@@Bigbadwhitecracker Actually the teaching didn't happen until several years after Peter left. He went broke, was trying to finish a solo album, had a band called Release that didn't gain traction and spent sadly some short time in prison for crossing the US - Mexican border with a small amount of hash. It was a tough time but the teaching he did later he said was meaningful for him.
I don't see the interviewer or the other guys giving him a chance to talk much. But Peter was attentive to the kids wanting autographs! I would have loved to have had that double album that Micky talked about with each having their own side. That would have been wonderful.
@@trebillis7399 I don't think Peter was ever "off" in interviews, maybe antsy and impatient. As he got older, he gave some wonderful solo interviews. You can find them on RU-vid. If you'll notice, the others never give him any time to speak. I think that's why he'd just blurt out something to get a word in edgewise. I can imagine his frustration.
@@trebillis7399 Mike and Peter got along a little better than most people know. I realize Mike has said some things that made their relationship seemed almost non-existent but there are some pictures on the internet that will make you think otherwise. Plus, Peter's death made Mike a little emotional, which can also be found on the internet.
It's trash. It should've gone in a raunchy humor direction. Part of what put the Monkees over is thier charm & Humor. They were trying to be serious dull edgy instead of being edgy humorous. It could've been like the 3 stooges meets dumb & Dumber.
This is fantastic, an excellently preserved video & very revealing for its short running time. I love seeing that kid near the end, can't wait to get some Monkees' autographs!
Maybe he wasn't as good of a singer as, say, Micky, but he really was talented. He played a whole bunch of instruments, wrote a handful of songs, and was a really groovy guy.
Starting at 2:33 - 2:44 I totally agree with Davy. Just hearing him say that makes me feel like I didn't realize that until Just now:) Davy, thanks for great words:)
Actually Nez is a very funny guy, but in interviews he tended to give serious, focused answers. And like Peter, Mike wasn't entirely happy in this band set up by this time either.
@@cherylhulting1301 , you make a good point. And remember, Peter was the first to quit. Mike stuck with The Monkees for another year and a half, after Peter left.
All had their talents...and I agree they were on par with each other in that respect....my fav with the Beatles for group of all time...their music was happy mixed with trippy and different at times...and while they had their share of clunkers, overall they were a damn good band
I've been playing music (guitar, bass, vocals) professionally and semi-professionally for about 25 years. Tambourine is actually difficult to play, the rhythm of it takes a mastering of technique. Davy played guitar, was a dancer, and could act. He would co-write songs, some of which were good. Mike Nesmith would say he and the others were about on a par with each other....they were all great talents.
I thought Head was a very creative movie, perfect for its time. It certainly gave the Monkees an opportunity to expand in a different direction. You're not going to see a video segment like the Porpoise Song anywhere else, that's for sure. Unfortunately, it didn't take the country by storm as the interviewer said, but it was a fun movie.
Hard-core Monkees Fans of the T.V. Show resented The Movie for the fact that the group were trying to destroy their t.v. image, and The Hippy movement that the Monkees wanted to appeal to immediately rejected the movie due to the fact that they view the Monkees as for Teenyboppers only. So as brilliant as the movie is especially for the Monkees it locked them into a no win situation at the time it came out.
@@davidbreen6335 actually, I think the Monkees seemed rather silly adapting to that hippie phase. It was too much of a contradiction to their zany image, although they did start to inject some seriousness into the last 2 or 3 minutes of their television shows. I find that more interesting now as an adult than I did as a kid. But the movie itself was creative, in my opinion. It was a mixture of Help and Magical Mystery Tour.
Hy Lit was a popular radio DJ in Philadelphia from the 1950s until 2005. He was an institution here, an icon, who had a nationally syndicated TV show called The Hy Lit Show, originating at WKBS, Channel 48, in Philadelphia in the 1960s. It aired in about 30 stations nationwide according to the wikipedia entry. Lit went from AM radio in the 50s, 60s and 70s, to FM "underground" progressive radio, and finally to "oldies" in the latter part of his career.
At 5:03 - 5:12 the kid tapped Davy, asking for his autograph, and just the way Davy smiles and agreed to give it, just makes me smile:) hey I would do that to:) (Maybe a little faint though) haha :)
Man, I cant believe all the negative comments and the back and forths on who was the most talented Monkee. We all have our preferences but all four were very talented, all four were good song writers, all four had good voices, yes even Peter if you heard him in person, and all four were extremely entertaining. Head was very strange but the sound track is stellar. I've never seen this interview, so thanks for posting it.
@@howie9751 Yes, seriously. I'm not saying they were song writing legends but lots of people enjoyed their written songs. I guess it depends on what you like. For instance, For Pete's Sake has a great message and melody. Love is understanding, Howie.
Long John Wade was a DJ at WDRC in Hartford, CT. He traveled with the Beatles on their '64 tour. Looks like he wormed his way into the Monkees camp in '68, while they filmed "Head" in early 1968
I love The Monkees since the TV show they did from 1966 to 1968 ! Davy was my very first love my last love too besides my Denny who died June 13th 1986 age 44 ! Ill always love Davy and really do miss him so so very much !RIP Davy !
If you look at the way the boy reacts when he claps and tilts his head I'm almost 100 percent sure he has autism and he is non verbal that's way he grab Davy arm instead of using words and you can tell the other kid with him was looking after him that was realy sweet of David to do that
This is an amazing survivor, just the sort of thing that one hopes would turn up on DVD reissues. Rights problems and all that I guess...I love how Mike directs his 'pontificating scenes' comment to Peter (obviously referring to the 'Guru' sequences in Head) and Mr.Tork gives him a look right back. It's a miracle they did the great work they did when you consider how different they all were. Thanks for posting, a brilliant clip!
It was probably done, but because of the drugs they were on really sucked. You also gotta keep in mind that they were really not musicians. Even Mike and Peter, they were musicians, but not at the caliber of say Hendrix....they played. So I imagine the idea of each having a side might have been made but was not quality enough to ever get released.
@@trebillis7399 It was released, just whittled down to the single "Instant Replay," but more of the remaining songs came out later as Rhino reissue CD bonus tracks.
Great footage from a show that I've heard didn't preserve a lot of their shows so thanks for sharing!! Peter looks remarkably upbeat so I'm guessing this is before he got turned down for the role of Dr. Zeus.
all the monkees were talented in there own way Davy had the face the british charm amazing voice, very broadway very theatrical , Micky also had the voice , the personality , sense of humour ,Peter tork excellent musician ,hippie very peace and love very sweet and Mike was the anchor who had that dry humour the vision good guitar player was about making good music put them all together and the monkees was born and memories were made everyone of them were talented and had the ability play off one another
Beautiful! Thank You! But never forget, though they have the right to say what they believe in, It's just another opinion, is all. Such a shame to never know what joy and happiness there is. But only to absorb it as a inhuman need for control, and profit. While there is truth in that statement, I see it as a greater understanding.....
Compiled in a group with probabley the most (2) recognizeable voices in music history ( Davy Jones & Micky Dolenz)..it would be hard to stand out vocally,..I encourage you to listen to Peter's version of" "I don't think you know me" and Words"..
Hy's real name was Hyski O'Roonie McVadio Zadio Zoot. He was a Philly DJ on A.M. 98 WIBG ( wibbage) from the early '60s, on, playing Motown, British Invasion , Philly Sound. R.I.P
The Monkees would be far less interesting without the integrity of Nesmith and Tork. Take 1 of them out of the equation and we'd probably have had 2 or 3 worse and worse seasons with a yearly Vegas Revue style reunion. I'll take Peter Tork and his musicianship over whoever just missed out anyday!
These guys were the best you got to admit it even though Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork where musicians then they kind of grew together as a real band and I just zany characters take me all the way back to my childhood Mike Nesmith First National band written some pretty good stuff
Actually they did. By second season they were so well known that they could get away with looking more individual. This was great; I personally loved Micky's natural hair, Davy's Nehru shirts, Peter's beads and beards, and Mike's suits, crazy ties and fabulous, more elaborate sideburns. They used to joke that they turned into "three hippies and a well-dressed Texan " 😊
@@athenaapollos1966 Me too! The remark made me chuckle! Mike did those Mod suits with the lace cuffs for a while and I just loved that look on him. He cleans up real nicely.
Long John Wade was a DJ at WFIL in Philadelphia from 1966 to 1971. It was the rival station to WIBG where Hy Lit was on the air. It would be interesting to know if this was filmed in Philadelphia or if the 2 DJ's traveled to CA for this interview.
If you read back through the comments, it was a comment about Davy Jones. Tork could do just about everything but sing which is what they actually needed from the members for the way it was laid out.
Mike recorded the tracks that would be on his side of the album in Nashville in 1968, some like 'listen to the band' and 'good clean fun' and 'don't wait for me' wound up on the next 2 albums but others (some of shellys blues, hollywood, propinquity, the crippled lion) he redid with the first national band but they (along with how Insensitive and I think another track which is escaping me right now) weren't released under the monkees name until the missing links compilations in the late 80s and 90s
Please see my reply to the original poster above. You got the story partially correct. There is a lot of info on Hy Lit online. You can go to HyLitRadio on the internet, which is run by his son. The other DJ to whom you refer is named Jerry Blavat. (There's no "n" in his name.) Blavat had a couple of tv shows in the sixties. I'm not sure that Blavat and Hyski weren't both on tv during the same years.
It's Long John Wade who appears in the black and white photograph. I finally solved the case. You'll even see the haunted castle sequence. Was the individual drinking human or animals blood from an industrial machine?
The group, along with Nicholson and Bert with Bob went to Ojai,in California, smoked Grass,or "Frodis" as they'd called it,while discussing how the movie should go.more or less..Critics called it "A Hard Day's Night On Acid",for good reasons!
Between Jerry Blavat and Hy Lit, the Monkees had plenty of contact with Philly. Interesting seeing Hyski back in the day, one of WIBbaGe's all-time popular DJs,along with Joe Niagara and Tom Donohue. C'mon, he did as much homework as anyone could do, he only had a few minutes and Head looked pretty mysterious and hard to explain in that length of time.
