Monster flash flood intercepted with the flash flood guru David Rankin in New River, AZ just north of Phoenix! Monsoon insanity continues across Arizona and New Mexico with historic rainfall. Another major wave of heavy rain and storms is on the way for tomorrow. These flash floods have an incredible distinctive smell!

Creosote and sage. Growing up in Yuma, you could always tell where the storms were coming from. If it smelled like seawater or salt, the storm was coming up from El Gulfo de Santa Clara. If it smelled of creosote or sage then it was coming from across the desert either from El Centro or from Phoenix. If it smelled like dust, you closed up everything and made sure nothing could fly cuz a good haboob was coming.

Why you really should not camp during summer here in AZ. Just because it is not raining where you are at doesn't mean it is not pouring somewhere up North and all the water runs down hill. Too many slot canyons and box canyons that can become death traps during monsoon season. I love the Sonoran Desert. It is where I was born and raised but I also know from years of roaming, hunting and camping, the desert, regardless of time of year, will kill you if you are not careful. Camping on what appears to be high ground may not be that in the event of a sudden squall. AZ really is a truly beautiful and savage garden and as long as you educate yourself and take necessary precautions, the amount of fun and natural beauty you can have here is limitless. I have lived in numerous places courtesy of Uncle Sam(Air Force Brat and Marine Wife) but AZ has been and will always be home for me. There is nothing like it anywhere!!!

AWESOME VIDEO! Boy, you guys were lucky to have caught the start of the monster flash flood in that area. From my camping experiences, I'm pretty familiar with the deserts here in California, and I learned fast that one needs to keep track of the weather forecast via a radio so your 4x4 doesn't get trapped in a wash that suddenly starts filling up with rapidly moving water which almost happened to me and my ex-husband when it began to rain unexpectedly while we were in Horse Canyon, and the only way back to civilization was to drive back through the water of Horse Creek.

@@hannahsenior5124 being a 25 year long former resident of Las Vegas, I'm well aware of the monsoon cycles of the southwest. The fact is that the rivers did not stop flowing, but the man made reservoirs and their levels ARE controlled, either by use, or simply opening or closing the gates to let the level go up or down. It's a great way to create fear, and since nobody can remember any amount of time these days, people buy into the fear hook line and sinker. I've seen Lake Mead at lower levels than now, and it wasn't that long ago...I've also seen it flowing over the spillways. The Earth's climate go's through cycles, plain and simple...but cycles are fact, not fear, and fear is needed for control.

Scientists say the Sun may be going through a long period of decreased activity known as the Modern Grand Solar Minimum from 2020 to 2053. So stuff like this may get worse. Extreme localised weather of any sort is as normal as Apple pie.

God has had enough. He says, “I have some plans of my own: Disaster because of this interbreeding evil! Your necks are on the line. You’re not walking away from this. It’s doomsday for you. Mocking ballads will be sung of you, and you yourselves will sing the blues: ‘Our lives are ruined, our homes and lands auctioned off. They take everything, leave us nothing! All is sold to the highest bidder.’” And there’ll be no one to stand up for you, no one to speak for you before God and his jury.

Yep, when it rains in Phoenix, or anywhere else in the state, our massive runoff control infrastructure channels the water properly to avert property damage. Our dry washes are supposed to aid in this diversion and collection. Eventually all the water is captured and soaks directly into the aquifer. This is the result of far sighted management and engineering. The videos may look dramatic and sometimes repair work becomes necessary but this is totally expectable and controlled. And that is another reason why we have lived here for over 40 years. Larry in beautiful Glendale, Az.

I would not be standing under that conveyor belt... it's designed for vertical load, not horizontal load, that stream is probably exerting up to a ton of pressure sideways... throw in a heavy object in that debris and that could be enough to bring that conveyer down. But as usual, good footage.

I own ten acres in Arizona, and a corner of it is considered a "wash". It becomes a really green area and a magnet for wildlife when we have decent monsoon rains like this year. Part of my property becomes a raging river for awhile, followed by plants and animals I seldom get to see. I also go rockhounding once things dry up, and find some amazing treasures that have washed through and been left behind. I have a collection of beautiful minerals, including some petrified wood, even a fully intact coyote skull. As for the scorpions, I have sat outside at night and passed a black light over the yard outside my back door... loads of them show up in the light, creepy as heck, just sitting out there. Now and then, I get inundated with toads after a heavy rain. So many toads that I actually can't step outside without squishing one. Yuck.

i remember seeing the sign "do not cross flashflood occurs" post by the SALT RIVER PROJECT department. the creek or washbasin looks so harmless until the rush came from nowhere like torrential rushing water coming at untold speed. a flash flood is very common in desert Arizona. also when nightfall, the temperature could drop very cold. always have a blanket with you. plenty water and blankets.

@rongray8416
@rongray8416 3 года назад
Nope on both counts the whole New River area is full of washes caused by flash floods over centuries of time naturally,.. and if there's gold you gotta dig deep do to the amount of sand and mud...better of going more northwest to the bumblebee area for gold, there you still can pan easier with better results lots of smallish rivers/streams with sandy beaches...then again its monsoon season so it could be just one big mudpit depending on how much water sticks around...either way its not a get rich quick (if at all) place for gold/silver. Its more a small nugget/flake.. pay the bills/hobby.. kind of thing...if there was any "real" big amounts of gold/silver the mines would have been all over it decades ago....sorry to bust that bubble but that's just how it is here in Az
