This was OUTSTANDING! I'm just a guy from Chicago too and looking forward to all his videos as I've just become a subscriber. I've re-run the video more than "a few times" and now I have an interest in Montana beyond!

You can have out of state plates and NY can’t do anything - nothing illegal about it. I can help you with insurance in both states. Give us a call 855-438-7353
Mr. Steve, Great video, thanks a lot for the overview. One thing I'm curious about that I don't see anybody talking about is: can you use a Montana LLC to make a "registration round trip"? For instance, acquire vehicle, register acquired vehicle in Montana, then sell it back to yourself for a nominal amount (maybe put $1,000 or so on the bill of sale) in your actual state of residence, then register your vehicle in actual state of residence. California has been cracking down on out of state plates and this seems to be a potential way around it. Have you ever seen anybody do that? Any pitfalls to doing something like this? Cheers, Henry
That really defeats the whole purpose. States like CA have extra inspections and requirements like SMOG testing which is why they use a state like MT. Something like what you’re describing makes more sense to do in South Dakota where you can obtain a permanent virtual address.
Thanks for the quick reply, sounds like it might be a way to save on sales taxes but not the other gripes coming with California registration. Cheers. Henry@@Mrinsurancesteve
A friend of mine who owns multiple super cars and lives in Los Angeles was well aware of the Montana loophole and told me that in CA if they see Montana plates on a sportscar they'll pull you over for whatever reason they can and try to find some issue they can tax you for. The law is paid by your tax dollars and apparently they don't like it when you take money out of their pocket by not paying all the CA taxes and fees...
@@MattressDealsOfficialtell your friend if he dont have a CA DL or CA ID then yor friend don't have to contract with the officer unless a crime was commited for those codes be regulations of California registered vehicles only of California residents only, exercise what is right
Can you register your car in Montana or any other state that doesn’t have strict laws and regulations on car modifications because California gives a tough time with mods, can i use this this to legally modify my cars while living in cali?
There’s no inspections in Montana if that’s what you’re asking. Same with South Dakota. That’s why many register their cars in these states to get around the strict inspections.
Hey thanks for the video. Just to clarify: Even if I purchase in Virginia (4.5% sales tax) I will not pay any sales tax at the dealership if I am registering in Montana? If buying new would I have to purchase the vehicle under the LLC?
I got a Toyota supra 6spd manual on krder and I live in Illinois. Iys a 60k car and still Illinois charge 8.75% sales price. So i was thinking wjen it will get done and shipped to dealer abd picked up by me. My question is if i register to a Montana llc can i just insure it u der my name the car even if the title is for llc? Or i need other insurance that only insures llc vehicles? I got state farm so was wondering if i can just add the llc car to my insurance somehow? What address they register the llc cars to ? They have mailboxes or how does that work.
Contact dirtlegal.com to help with setting up MT llc and call my office 636-410-6219 when you’re ready for insurance. State Farm doesn’t like the Montana stuff
Hey Steve I have a business out in California I want to move to Montana becuase the dmv fees alone are going to put me out of business my question is can I get insurance and register my ford f350 in Montana and get commercial insurance?
I’m even considering this for a $60K purchase because of both Missouri sales tax and personal property tax. It adds up quick. Is there any notable expenses I’m overlooking? (Aside from the LLC creation and annual tax return prep.) Do you have to pay more than usual for insurance? Are financing and/or leasing costs more expensive because it’s in an LLC? I’ll do some research, but if you have any immediate reactions, I’d be interested to hear them.
You’d insure the vehicle wherever it’s garaged and put the Montana llc as an endorsement. The Montana LLC is just for titling and doesn’t have anything to do with where or how it’s insured. All you’re doing is creating a tax shelter for no sales tax, no PP tax and no inspections. Each year you pay about $150 for the registered agent to file your corp docs and keep the LLC in place in montana. A great place to start is dirtlegal.com.
There’s one huge thing often overlooked! If your registering a vehicle with gvwr over 10k lbs (think f350 or similar) you have now created a commercial motor vehicle subject to CMV inspection, you need dot numbers (unless your in Montana), and IFTA.
I live in Alabama 7 months out of the year. 5 months in Montana where I own land. I have an LLC. I use Allstate auto, home, and personal liability umbrella in AL. Will Allstate list my vehicle as an additional interes or will I have to get a commercial policy for my LLC? Thanks,
You don’t have to get a commercial policy for your llc in MT but if you register your car in MT, you’ll need an insurance policy out of there with the car being garaged In AL or wherever it is most the time and add a seasonal address.
@Mrinsurancesteve I was told by a company that my vehicles must have commercial insurance cause they would be under a montana llc, which was astronomical
Also nobody is talking about South Carolina. It's a Max $500 fee there and way less conspicuous than Montana plates. For me it'd be worth registering in SC just to avoid the eye in the sky. Nobody is paying attention to SC plates. Am I wrong?
I’m assuming you mean finance companies? Ally is by far the most Montana friendly. There’s some ways to get around the finance company on registrations
What insurance is best that works with LLC ? I live in Cali and i want to register my car in Montana but I don’t know what insurance company would cover that , does anybody have any idea what insurance to go with ?
@@MrinsurancesteveI have my vehicle registered through a Montana LLC while living in CA and I have been given a state ref for emissions. I’m getting a lawyer now but was this unlawful for the officer to do? He claimed it was because my primary residence was here in California so he can issued the state ref but what am I complying for in fixing my exhaust if the car isn’t even from California
What does registration of vehicle cost in Montana? is auto insurance cheaper than in Arizona? My auto insurance has been jumping up 10% every year since the Pandemic and just last week jumped 30%. I might have to sell my a couple vehicles just to eat : (
Buy the car under your llc in CA and then create a foreign LLC in MT with the SOS. You’ll be able to use that as an additional company “location” and use the certificate from SOS to show you can legally operate in MT.
@@Mrinsurancestevegotcha no way to get through this without a ca llc. Biggest thing I have been doing is just buying private party and registering in MT. Wasn’t aware of a way being able to go through a dealership just the MT llc.
You wouldn’t pay sales tax because you’d be registering in MT. Each state gets their fair share of taxes in multiple other avenues. This is a legal way to use the system to your benefit
Raw footage and Bloopers in RU-vid videos. Ha! … I thought my camera quit recording. I picked up where I left off with the other Montana video I have in here.
Just because you could, doesn’t mean you should. in CA you running your nice car with MT plate will get A LOT of attention from CHP. And yes, DMV codes requires you to register the vehicle in CA if it’s garaged in CA…. Good luck explaining how you’re garaging MT plated car driving in CA in Montana lol
You get the insurance wherever you vehicle is garaged unless you are a full time RV’er who lives in the RV and have a permanent residence in SD or MT. You have to list the LLC as an additional interest. Call my office at 855-438-7353 and we can help.
@@MrinsurancesteveCan you still get a personal vehicle policy or will you be required to get a commercial insurance policy since the vehicle is titled in the name of the LLC?
You would get a personal policy unless you have a need to go the commercial route. An example of this - you get a bunch of trucks and your llc is called Brads tree service. Then, going Commercial is the way to go.
