I have been surf casting for about 3o years first as others have said go to a TA clip and get rid of the duo clip second there is a difference in mono and leader material try to stick to a real good leader material you will see the difference. Third this is up to you but I say get rid of the barrel swivels if you plan on fishing more at night tie direct to the main line they will destroy your rod tips fast if you don't see them at night or in low light. If you are afraid of line twist put the swivel on the bottom of the leader then a TA clip. As far as the bag that is all up to personal choice I use ODM and Aqua skin never had a problem with them. For Montauk I learned to fish there at fall run and when the ocean and weather are pissed off it's a place you have to learn on your own tips from others are good and just but you still need to learn on your own. Hope some of this helps and stay safe tight lines..

This is a lot of great advice, we truly appreciate it all. I used TA clips for a couple months, and to be honest, I've had a couple bend out a bit and I've casted off lures. As well as bend out during fights. And I have found them difficult to use when using deep cut poppers. On the flip side, I've had duo's bend out on me as well. So I guess we'll try both. haha, again, thank you so much!!

From all the reading I’ve done over the years regarding fishing Montauk, the key seems to be diversity. Don’t get stuck on one lure or style of fishing. Also, softbaits are much more productive in many cases either as teasers or as primary baits than typical hardbaits. Specifically, larger Shad body jigs with paddle tails like those offered by Tsunami, 9” Sluggos, Diamond jigs and Bucktails especially, tipped with bait strips like those offered by Otter and Fat Cow, Eel style baits like Hogy’s and Ronz. You get the idea! If nothing else, spend an afternoon just watching the other fishermen, keying on the more successful ones and talk to them, most are pretty amiable and willing to help from what I understand. Hope this helps you!

Hey Tim! Thank you so much for this advise! I don't normally throw bigger soft plastic swimbaits, but I will give it a shot! As well as all the other pieces of great advice! I really appreciate it!

Me and my dad tried montauk friday the 21st he was a big surfcaster when he was younger but stopped. Now im trying to learn from him so we walked from the sewer pipe all the way around the point i had two fish follow at the lighthouse but nothing other than that. Great video it seems like we are in the same boat just trying to learn more about the sport
@GetReelBassFishing

Yes sir! Thank you! We will learn together! I'll do my best to continue to put everything I'm learning in the videos! Good luck bro! Tell your dad I said Good Luck as well! Nothing quite like fishing with family and close friends! Continue to learn, never assume you know enough. Experience is the best teacher! Have fun out there dude! #smoochandrelease

The tape gets soft what works good is that plastic dip in a can paint that on your bag top to keep the hooks from catching
@ericao2559

I went through a phase where I literally wanted to plasti-dip everything 😂 that’s a great idea for the bags!

Ahh the river. Grew up fishing there with my grandfather. Crazy bunker there u guys need to get a cast net you’ll catch an insane amount over there with one. Especially when u go all the way in the back by the house boats! You’ll catch a bucket full. Trust me 🤙✌️

Yeah! Erica and I were talking about that while we saw it all unfolding! That would so fun! And definitely would be the most amount of fish I've ever caught at one time!

When I am fishing rocky areas, I use 65# Suffix and a 10’ - 15’ leader of 80# Trilene Big Game mono. I use a double uni knot to connect line to leader. I prefer conventional casting rod/reel combo, when fishing the rocks.

I'm a long time subscriber. Ran into you guys at the end of September as you were coming back from fishing the light. This video reminds me of all the expensive days losing lures! I feel your pain. Great video. And I just remembered I just got one of those surf bags and got to spray plastidip so my plugs don't catch.
@uliworms990
@uliworms990 4 года назад
Agree with previous comments: TA clip outperforms duo snaps; use the bigger TA clip (125lb?) for bigger lures. I would not bring my pliers near a knot I am tying - risk of damaging line/leader. Just moisten the knot (e.g. with saliva) before tightening. Tight lines!

Your best to stay closer to the water keep your line off the rocks! Try a longer leader use like a 10 ‘ going up to 50 lb braid will really cut down on your casting distance ! Great video keep at it 👍
@GetReelBassFishing
@GetReelBassFishing 4 года назад
Thanks for all the tips Chuck! I think I will try a longer leader. I used 50# last year with my 9' and when I made the switch to 30# I saw a HUGE difference in casting distance. Maybe 40# is a happy medium? haha
@chuckdumas1023

Might consider a longer leader for the rocks. I use 6-8’
@mikesfishingadventures2136
@mikesfishingadventures2136 4 года назад
For my experience I never use swivel. I tie braid and leader together with the blood knot also the swivel can damage the rod rings. In montauk I use 50lb power pro 8 heads black color (black color does not make knots even with the wind ) and the leader I use florocarbon 40 lb (mono is fine) but I'm crazy about florocarbon sugar

Worst bags in the market. How someone can even recommend one amazes me. Gear up or flatlander are legitimately the only two that you won’t snag the material every time you grab a plug.

Get rid of them duo snaps. Invest in some Tactical angler clips or breakaway clips if you hook into a nice fish and you get some leverage they can pop open and do a snaps

Switch to TA clips. Stop only fishing the light, move around to the north and south sides. Get a real wading belt and maybe a top of some sort that goes over your waders not tucked in.

@Luke-do1ek
@Luke-do1ek 4 года назад
Get Reel Bass Fishing I use high quality 30 pound braid on a 6K Salt x. Maybe the issue is not necessarily the strength of the braid- because 30 is pretty much the standard for our application of striper fishing on the south shore. So maybe the problem is the quality. Try out Power Pro slick v2 or Daiwa Jbraid. Both excellent. And if you still wanna use 40-50lb braid- I would step it up to a 6000 size reel.
