In this double month of Farch (aka, February and March) we receive a very small amount of candy, books, board games, savoury snacks, and so many feels from your lovely letters. Support LRR: / loadingreadyrun
To make room for new jokes and so forth, all memory of our previous creative endeavours has been shunted to long-term memory and cannot be readily accessed.
Hahaha holy shit, someone beat me to it! I was debating sending you guys a copy of Heroquest: Glorantha too! Now, let me provide with some context to hopefully clear up the confusion! Way back in 1975 a man named Greg Stafford created a publishing company by the name of Chaosium, in order to publish his own hex and chit wargame called White Bear and Red Moon, set in the world of Glorantha, which he created. Many years later, Chaosium had produced games like RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu and all manner of other things, and Heroquest was a term from the setting of Glorantha, and the trademark for it was held by Chaosium. Meanwhile, over in the UK, another company called Games Workshop (yeah, that GW) was acting as an importer and distributor of Chaosium games and RPGs, as well as nicking ideas from Glorantha for it's own future setting of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. While Greg Stafford is a man of rich imagination and great game design, he is not so good at the whole "running a company" thing, and so he actually let the "Heroquest" trademark slip...at which point it was snapped up by Milton Bradley and used by GW for their now famous board game. Several years ago, though, Moon Design (who currently own and run Chaosium, and who also owned the rights to Glorantha) managed to get back the trademark for HeroQuest and used it for their RPG system, set in Glorantha. Also, on a completely personal note - That book you received has my first officially published illustrations in an RPG! Yay!
I thought I recognized the word "Glorantha" from a Let's Play of King of Dragon Pass a few years back, so that should be a lot of fun to follow if they get around to playing those. Also, a minor inclusion on the Heroquest name saga. The first game in the Sierra Quest for Glory video game series was originally titled and released as Hero's Quest (in the same naming vein of the King's Quest, Police Quest, and Space Quest stuff) but they didn't trademark it and had to change it to Quest for Glory a year later. Milton Bradley then quickly released their first video game adaptation of Heroquest.
I had hoped the letter i sent with some background on Heroquest: Glorantha would reach them the same month as the source book, so hopefully that will be coming to them soon. And oh wow, which page is your work on?
Nathan - Well I did the two comics that illustrate the examples of play - Pages 77 and 99, the depiction of the Seven Steps of the Red Goddess on page 183 is also mine, though technically that's just one of the pages from the Prince of Sartar webcomic, and not specifically done for the book. I also did the example comic on page 223 and probably one of my personal favourite pieces I've done so far - the Gods War illustration depicting the concept of Illumination on page 207. At that time I was just starting out, so that's about all I have.
I am A_Catastrophic_Success and first of all, I want to say sorry for the exploded okra. Second, Beej was correct, we had to take the air out of the Cow Tails bag to get it to fit. We did not eat any of those ourselves, though the temptation was high. Last, we make no apologies for the Cocky hat. :D
The marzipan pig is a price for the family member who finds a hard almond in their christmas pudding/milk rice/gruel/porridge. Don't ask why, it's tradition.
IIRC the point behind Scournful Egotist is you can morph it for 3 and flip it up for 1 and now you have an 8-CMC creature to use with CMC-matters cards. There were a handful of cards in Scourge that key off "the highest CMC among permanents you control", which the Egotist is a (not the greatest) enabler for.
Firstly, the 'crate' for Alex; SICK props to the sender, because that was fantastically well-thought-out! It tickled my heart to see how he reacted to such an apt gift, and I was just a bystander! :D Also, regarding the '0' entries on the nutrition facts: typically those are 'amounts greater than zero, but would be rounded down to same with the level of precision for the units given for this' (e.g. Something with less than 0.35mg of sodium per serving would just show "Sodium___0mg___0%DV"; actual zero quantities of a nutrient would just NOT list it on the label (well, for the 'lesser' ones beyond the 'core' nutrients like Calories/Fat/Protein/Carbs/Sodium/Cholesterol ) So there's probably trace amounts of lotsa good vitamins, based on how long that label was. :)
Hey! Iowan here! Yep our state code is "Ia" and Keokuk (Native word, we are in the region of the US we took a lot of First Nations names for things) is pronounced "KEE-uh-kuk" We also have such lovely places like Sioux City and Maquoketa, (muh-KOH-kuh-tuh), Keosauqua(kee-oh-SAW-kwah) and then random French ones like Des Moines. Cuz yay settlers.
While abroad Yankee typically refers to a generic American, inside the US it usually used by someone from the south (e.g. Georgia) as a derogatory for someone from the North.
I live in CA and only ever hear the word Yankee in movies set in the past and it's always used by a non-american (usually a Brit) to refer to an American. So if someone like Graham called me a yankee I would just chuckle at the lighthearted jab.
Scud422 oh totally, I don't take offense to it as someone in "the North", but it's not surprising that it isn't a thing in California. I assume its leftover culture from the civil war
As someone who went to the Univeristy of South Carolina we are very aware of the fact that we are the Game Cocks. Also I completely forget that other places do get to enjoy the amazing thing that is Girl Scout Cookies.
RE: HeroQuest Apparently Milton Bradly let the HeroQuest trademark lapse, and these guys picked it up. The tabletop RPG is entirely unrelated to the board game.
I tend to think yall over-edit (as in "spend too much time editing so stuff takes longer to come out and I don't like that but who am I to tell you how to do your job"), but the opening alone gave me joy, never mind the rest of the episode. Please keep doing it. ;)
Just (finally) finished watching Mail time and I wanted to let antimuffin know that someone got the reference and I was very excited to have it verified :-)
WeedenProject Thank you! They were a lot of fun to paint. Also, when I said Chad spent more time watching Twitch than the road I wasn’t lying. imgur.com/wZeXygE
Farch mail (as of upload) is always a gag. I mean, you think it's mail you're getting then it's spiders or candy or Squees (probably not since that Friday Nights hadn't come out yet but still)... but yeah, perhaps there was a bit of delay in getting us mail.
You guys probably know this story, but for the rest of the comments: The expansion Scornful Egotist was in (Scourge) had a "CMC matters" theme. There were a bunch of cards in that expansion like Rush of Knowledge (gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=rush%20of%20knowledge) which cared about the highest CMC creature you controlled. Which means that in the context of that expansion, that 8 CMC was actually supposed to be an advantage. The point was that you would cast it on turn 1 for its morph cost, flip it on turn 2, and then go off with one of these spells on turn 3. (Not that this was generally a good plan in practice. Note that it involves untapping with a 1 toughness creature on the board that heavily signals you're planning to go off.)
I'd say that still counts; the spelling is close enough that someone who does know the word would recognize what you were trying to write. Oh! And where are you from?
If, in addition to eating Cuba, you would also like to DRINK a country, I suggest you find a Mexican grocery and find Jamaica Jarritos. The other flavours are normal, mandarin, lime, etc. But there's also just 'Jamaica'.
I was thinking about the "check out this beet" joke just last week, and the actual line in the song is "check out this hook". Somehow it doesn't matter though, and doesn't make the joke any less funny.
Ah, unfortunately it seems my package did not make it into the Farch Mailtime, I suppose I shall just have to wait till June for the Apray episode :/ :D
13:10 For anyone curious about Twilight Imperium, the massive game with millions of minis and a fountain of factions, Shut up and Sit Down did a documentary on it called "Space Lions." It's available free on the youtubes.
Having Beej on board for mailtime was a surprisingly fun time; if other Doctors LRR might have the free time to join on in, I would love to see a “featured LRRer of the month” join in on future mailtime episodes! Also, please never never ever say Farch again. You have a whole year to make the correct decision next time
Girl Scout Cookies are kind of confusing even for folks in the USA. Mostly because they use two different bakeries and depending on the region the troop is from they'll either come from one bakery or the other. The only cookie that's static between the two bakeries are the Thin Mints and beyond that, they have some with mostly (but not completely) the same recipe like Samoas vs Caramel deLites (I like Samoas more myself) and others that only one or the other bakery produces like the Toffee-tastic box you received. Aaaand that ends your completely useless fact dump for the day ...
Olin Petty I'm the one who sent the second set of girl scout cookies. I wrote a very similar fact dump in my note! Although I didn't know the recipes were different. Thanks for teaching me a new thing, internet stranger.
From what I've heard of Twilight Imperium, you'll need not so much a day, as in a weekend and a great deal of patience. So if you do it, and decide to film it, a highlight reel might the best way to go about it :P
Twilight Imperium is my fav game, I hope you can play it sometime (tho tbh it takes a while to learn so I would recommend playing a practice game before streaming).
I was looking for this comment. I heard Beej read out his name and had to do a double take. Cool stuff. *wanders off to look into Token of the Month Club*
TWILIGHT IMPERIUM 4TH EDITION! I can't wait for them to play that is is my favorite game and a classic good. Also I think this show is the best only second to you guys eating hot/random things.
