Do both, that’s what i did. It wasn’t cheap tho. Thebags were around 300-500 each and the boxes were 700-800 yen each. Every region had a different type. The rum raisin, onsen manju, fuji strawberry cheesecake was Hakone/mt fuji area. The red bean sandwich and sake was Kanazawa. Tokyo bannana in Tokyo (go figure). The maple bean was myajima island near Hiroshima. The purple sweet potato is normally found in okinawa but i fiund quite a few in a department store in Osaka (the one with a ferris wheel like thing along the waterfront near the runner started sign) , etc. I hate going into gift shops normally but thisgave me a great excuse to browse and explore the different parts of japan.
