Dave, you should try to turn the plastic into inch and a half pipes to use for plumbing. then you can turn the garbage into plumbing products for toilets or water supply

Hello Dave. You are doing a tremendous job. Not only on the creative side around plastic, but also by increasing the awareness on its negative environmental impact. Plastic doesn't just end up as harmful trash. It will recirculate via the food chain and very likely it will have a negative effect on life in general. Keep on going, and I am sure that you will make our planet a better place. Thx.

Love it. Also don't forget to make billet plastics for sale. CNC machining of plastics could be a way forward as well. Making larger 30-50cm x1m long billet chunks of plastic could open a whole new world of manufacturing for everyone. Also one more thing to consider when making those molds. Flower pots are fine and dandy, but you could make hybrid bricks also to make green homes that are put together with very little cement/or effort. Just reusing plastic trash while being fairly energy friendly, think lego but on a much larger scale.

Bruno M. I had the very same thought. There is a large market for machineable stock. If we are just prototyping, why not use recycled materials? One question I still need to research is the off-gassing of the plastics as it is melted.

Excellent point! There are many home work shops and small businesses with lathes and mills that would use recycled materials in the form of billets and blanks or flat sheets of they could get it since buying virgin material blanks is very expensive!! Think about blocks or round stock that can be shipped cheaply!! Also want to say you guys are awesome and are actually changing the world!!!!

Yeah great comment. I've thought about molding some kind of brick out of plastics to make homes out of. Problem is I think you need special glues to glue plastic bricks together or you need to weld / solder them. Or maybe make something like shingles out of them. Depending on the plastic that might require dyes or coatings to make them UV resistant. But the CNC stock is a great idea too!

the pet plastic forming is an interesting idea!
@AJTarnas
@AJTarnas 6 лет назад
I'm going to make this comment without looking to see if you've already done it, but there is an idea that you can use PET bottles to make joints, especially for wood and plastic members. Cut both ends from a bottle, leaving a cylinder. Insert two poles of wood. Heatshrink the pair. They are now joined! Various joinery geometries can be useful here. Micaella Pedros is the only person who I've seen using this idea. No one else appears to have picked it up.

Hola!

Great vids! But on a practical note, with the technology you have developed and the resources you have access to, can you make larger solid objets? I do not mean like a brick or tile (you can use the oven for that) I mean like a large sheet of plastic to make a door, for example. Or a fence post. Processing large volumes of plastic. I could think of a couple of ways to do it, by disassembling ovens and have the resistors underneath a large mold in the shape of a door and slowly heat the plastic, then press it with a car jack. Would you say that is possible?

There is a site I saw using PETE as heat shrink to improvise a size reducing adapter on a dust collection system in a shop. It also seems that some repair can be made on a leaf blower where the tube has snapped off of the motor. I don't think this stuff is suitable under much pressure without sealants though. I have no idea if this stuff is good for electrical insulation, but hope to find out. It looks like PETE might work as an abrasion barrier for things that don't get heavy use, and is easily replaced.

Mayby you can build all in one machine that shreds, melts and extrudes plastic?
@imaginarymask

I have been thinking about PET plastic too. Bottles are 3 parts; spout, bottom, and middle. The middle seems most useful. 2-liter bottles that are completely flat, could this be used like plexiglass? Also, I've thought about using this plastic to make pipes, gutters, or for general water moving. maybe you could make a heat press machine? I've tried the hot air and it only shrinks to a certain size before distorting and burning. with a heat press, you could form fan turbines out of flat plastic, as long as you have the form to press it into while at ideal temperature. Little finicky, but well worth it since the plastic is so abundant and few know what to do with it yet. Also, could it be ground into powder, then heat pressed? it never gets molten like #2, so heat would have to be distributed evenly, but it beworth trying out. Thank you guys for doing what you're doing and keep up the good work!!

great developments! brilliant to see how the entire project takes off just one question: why do you use plastic tape to put the letters up behind you? doesnt it become waste right once you finished shooting? if we dont make a consumption transition we will never be able to really tackle the problem all toghether are we? please reply!

I'd love to work on some kind of "landfill mining robot" that uses advanced computer vision and sensors to identify materials and recycle them. An autonomous robot vehicle that picks up trash, cuts it in into pieces and sorts it automatically to fully remove the landfills and recycle everything. Still science fiction, but I think with current advances in computer vision this could become reality. Then landfills will become resources.

@joseacosta6744
@joseacosta6744 5 лет назад
