Winter never ends in Montreal, as this footage of the recent ice storm shows! All footage belongs to Dan Vineberg, from danvineberg (at) gmail (dot) com #Montreal #Quebec #Canada
Amazing isn't it! We didn't even get 20mm of ice during this storm and we have widespread power outages and downed trees. Imagine back in 1998 when we got 100mm of ice! Stay safe out there Dan!
we got around 30 ish millimeters of ice here in MTL and were actually close to half a million people with no power in the city itself and over a million in the province alone...
My backyard contains this massive tree with very extended branches so quite a few of its branches fell off. None of them did any real damage but the tree is deformed and two large loose parts of it are caught onto other branches and are dangling above the power line , so we will have to chop those off. We were lucky to not lose our power considering this stupid tree was constantly breaking. According to my dad every time the branches fell it made a loud boom and then a rattling / hissing sound which terrified my cat , apparently she kept following my dad around and snuggling against him. Literally went on the cat tree and reached the top just to rub his head.
yesterday while i was at school the lights turned off andmy friend said a random blue light came in their class and vanished then when i got out the school the trees were all glass and even the lights for the street werent even working! so there was some traffic but luckily i was with my friend and our house still had electricity but my other friends wont reply to me on discord its been a day i dont think they have any electricity.
Great footage, yeah it's been quite a day here in Montreal I've been seeing branches fall all afternoon, kinda scary one almost hit a car.. stay safe everyone!
UNLIKE THE 1998 ONE, THIS ONE WAS INFURIATING FOR IT WAS VERY SELECTIVE. OUR MAIN STREET WELLINGTON WAS PERFECT AND SOME GROCERY STORES SCATTERED ALL AROUND US WERE WORKING WELL.
I’ve lived in snowy cold climates (not quite as bad as Montreal) but now I live in Vancouver and I have to say I’m almost jealous. My mum used to say there is no point of cold without snow. But while I like snow what bothers me about Vancouver is not lack of snow but way too much rain. I’ve come to haaaaaatttttteeeeee the rain.
Speaking from experience, when big branches come down in a storm like that, they are already compromised because they are sick (diseased) trees. It’s a hint, often, that the whole tree needs to come down.
When will the day come when we do away with the wrong trees growing in the city. Trees are no doubt the major cause of property damage, death, increased insurance premiums and loss of wages. Trimming tall trees only makes them weaker. Running power lines anywhere near power lines is insanity not to mention just plain stupid. It’s pretty obvious by your report that these trees were weak to begin with and a tree that appears healthy is not necessarily so. Wherever you have a tree that goes off in 2 directions at the junction of those two trunks you will get water collecting and this water will eventually rot the wood. If that water in the junction freezes the tree will split open. Frost can split rocks what do you think it will do to a tree? If you’ve ever been in the forest on a very cold day and heard what sounds like a very loud bang or explosion….that’s a tree that has violently split from frost.
