Montreal's Metro System is Incredible! 

The architecture is really beautiful! It is amazing what you can build when you don’t have to worry about bricks falling and killing people after an earthquake! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful French speaking city and Province!

Good video. As for the “Champ-de-Mars” station, it has to be seen during daytime on a sunny day at the upper level. It is the stained glass that is remarkable. Another station worth seeing is "Peel".

It feels so weird to see this video when you take the montreal metro everyday lol! We just don’t realize the architecture of the stations when we take it so it’s really interesting to see it and from a non-native montrealers perspective above all. 😁

I used to take the metro a lot in the 1980s and 90s, before anyone had smartphones. One of the things that would happen is I would stare at someone's reflection in the window. If they noticed I would pretend to be looking just beside her. Then you surreptitiously try to see if she is still looking at you. It was a funny "game" Now I suppose everyone just looks at their phones. Once I was taking night courses, and on the way home I fell asleep and instead of switching lines at Lionel-Groulx I ended up at Angrignon. When I was really young my grandmother would take me into town by metro. I lived on the South Shore so we had to take the yellow line, where the stations are separated by long distances because it goes under the river. I would sit in the window seat and stare at the blue neons going by in the tunnel. It was hypnotic.

Yeah, at Champs de Mars, you should have gone upstairs. That's where all the stained glass artwork is.

It's a shame that with the whole Covid thing the musicians aren't playing in the stations I guess... It would've been cool to show that :)

The Montreal metro really looks like a ghost town during Covid! No people. In Mexico City little by little the metro has become more crowded again. Though it's now maybe at about 60% the number of people it had pre-Covid. I remember the Montreal metro from when I visited there. (I'm sorry to say that was a bit over 20 years ago.) I love using the metro/subway when I travel. It's makes you feel like a resident rather than a tourist.

Thanks for the tour ! There are some stations I didn't visti for some years... For Champ-de-Mars, I think you missed the stained-glass window by Marcelle Ferron because you went there by night. It's worth to see it on a sunny day, inside and outside the station.

I visited Montreal from Toronto in 2016 and was blown away by the subway. It did feel like we went down 200km to get to the platform, pretty cool.

Please make a part 2 some day. Make sure you feature Lucien L'allier in it. It is one of the deepest metros that features a very long escalator. Also Beaudry has one of the most surprising escalators of the whole systems. Actually a magic carpet ride for kids and adults alike.

Great video! Having never visited Montreal, this seems like a legitimately cosmopolitan city. Montreal Metro also appears to be a very well thought out and maintained system from inception to today.

Bonaventure is pretty nice as well, one of the better maintained stations since its connected to the VIA rail station, a hotel and many big office buildings. You can also walk from Bonaventure to McGill station using the underground.

Just got back from Montreal and was staying at univ Montreal ZUM residence by the Edouard Mon-Petit stop on the blue line..I caught a few ubers going back and forth THEN tried the subway..I gotta tell y'all what a pleasure it was, never felt unsafe, never smelled piss, etc..definitely the best subway system i have been on. Now that i familiarized myself with the metro i can't wait to go back.

The beauty of Champs-de-Mars is at the exit upstairs where is was designed with lots of stained glass and colored plexiglass roofing. In summer you get splashes of colors on the walls and floors as you enter and exit the metro. It is also just north of Old Montreal and the Old port, so as you exit you are greeted with the sight of the old Viger train station building and just beyond that you have the oldest part of the city.

Wow, your subway stations are so clean! And thanks for the efforts... I never liked being in the subway.. The smell, the darkness. So many hours would be a torture to me 😊

I like how colourful and unique the stations are. Vancouver's are much more plain/grey/industrial looking in comparison. Also the trains are so long!

Great shots! I've always loved the Montréal métro. My favourite station was Saint-Henri because it's so grandiose, but over time, it became Préfontaine which is like a very good architect's loveletter to métro stations. Everything is so discreet and clever, and during the day it's extremely well lit from the outside, and from the street, although more discreet than Radisson, it also has a great 70s spaceship look, but the construction is so simple and low-tech (it was the 70s, after all). I also love the Pic and Pelle soaring art of the Monk métro. And bravo for your pronunciation, especially your nasal for Radisson! But French makes it almost impossible to get everything right, so: in Place Saint-Henri, there is no liaison so you don't pronounce the T; in Place-des-Arts, there IS liaison so you pronounce the first S as Z (but extra points for not pronouncing the final S!); in Champ-de-Mars, you don't pronounce the P, but you DO pronounce the final S (as an S); finally, a tiny mistake but good to know: the É in Préfontaine rhymes with pray, not brie, since É-accent-aigu is ALWAYS pronounced that way. Ah, French.

Just a suggestion but I don’t remember you mentioning that it operates on tires? It’s unique in North America.

You missed the nice stained glass at Champs-de-Mars! However, I found the stained glass better at Charlevoix station. I also recommend visiting Verdun and Namur station

If you like Place St. Henri, you'd adore some of the metro stations in Santiago de Chile. There's a few where they have these art-deco brass pillars holding everything up, and you can stand on one of the concourses near the ticket offices and look down on three or even four separate metro lines arriving and departing at separate levels. It's like Station Antwerpen-Centraal in Belgium. But, y'know. Metro.d

Nicely shot and edited. So similar to Vancouver's Skytrain system (built for Expo 86), the Montreal metro was built for Expo 67 and opened October 14th 1966? Not a lot of people, so you weren't travelling during a weekday am/pm rush hour?

Interesting how most of your inside the train shots are on the older MR-73 stock. Also interestingly Champ-de-Mars is pronounced with the 's' , from the old French word for 'March' . It's located near a 17th century militia drill square, literally a 'marching field'

I see the metro maps and each station is a white circle. In the early 80s when the orange line was being built. Instead of updating the map periodically, they would put a white sticker next to the metro station on the map. So one week you would see that place St Henri had a white sticker, then a month later you would see Vendome would have a white sticker and So forth.

Radisson is exactly the most strange beautiful station ! giant spaceship :-)

I'm just old enough to remember when this system was pretty new. At the time it was pretty futuristic, and very stylish. I didn't know the term 'Brutalist' back then, and I don't recall much use of it in our local press. But now it seems obvious to me how influenced the Metro is by Brutalism. I just always thought the system was kind of cold, hard, and impersonal. Brightly lit with seering neon in some areas, and kind of dim in others. Now it's a bit run down & dirty, as well. That said, I've always been kind of proud of how well public transit works in our city (despite the legitimate niggles - some of which _any_ system would have).

Yes the architecture is nice especially the original stations and the copy of Paris etc. Vancouver is strictly West Coast utilitarian. Bang for the buck that works. Toronto is a basket case but still compared to anything else in North America it holds it own.
