MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL Movie Description:
A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a 1975 British comedy film reflecting the Arthurian legend, written and performed by the Monty Python comedy group (Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Idle, Jones and Palin), directed by Gilliam and Jones. It was conceived during the hiatus between the third and fourth series of their BBC television series Monty Python's Flying Circus.
While the group's first film, And Now for Something Completely Different, was a compilation of sketches from the first two television series, Holy Grail is a new story that parodies the legend of King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail. Thirty years later, Idle used the film as the basis for the musical Spamalot.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail grossed more than any other British film exhibited in the US in 1975. In the US, it was selected as the second-best comedy of all time in the ABC special Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time. In the UK, readers of Total Film magazine in 2000 ranked it the fifth-greatest comedy film of all time; a similar poll of Channel 4 viewers in 2006 placed it sixth.

The ending is actually a reference to one of the recurring gags on the original Monty Python's Flying Circus sketch comedy show. They had a habit of ending their sketches with a policeman coming in to break up the sketch. This being the first Monty Python film, they had a number of direct callbacks to the show, like the line "get on with it", Terry Gilliam's trademark animation used to segue between vignettes, and the fact that most of the movie consists of a series of meandering, non-sequitur argument sketches. That 20 minutes of music over black screen, though? Classic trolling.

I've actually seen this in a packed theater with a live audience. There's nothing better than seeing this with a large group of people literally rolling in the aisles. That, and the stunned silence of the audience at the end, followed by people slowly cracking up and losing it.

Yeah, below is the list for the main guys (from IMDb: www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/). Note that their playing also many of the female roles, both was very common for them in their Flying Circus skits, but also something very British. It would not be unheard of for a man to dress up in women's clothes, for example for the New Year's celebration, and it is really common for nights out in universities. The “intermission” joke doesn’t make sense in the modern day, but in the past it was common for movies to be shown in two parts to allow the film operators to change reels and allow people to use the restroom and buy more concessions. So when the movie came out and the intermission came on people started to get out of their seats assuming it was an actual intermission, then the movie suddenly started again only a few seconds later.

Monty Python was formed under the idea that punch-lines are usually a let down, and that the funniest part of a joke/sketch is often the path you take to get there. So, they usually shift to something else at the end of a scene instead of the usual formula of setup-punchline. Glad you enjoyed it.

My friend almost got fired for writing that on a memo to a colleague for a joke . He got pulled in the office and told that "any form of bullying isnot tolerated and its an instant dismissal " his work mate had to explain that it was a funny quote from movie and they were writing quotes to each other to beat the monotony on shift. He got to keep his job but was supervised alot more.

For the Black Knight segment, it's John Cleese at first until he's down to one leg. Then it's a man that actually had only one leg. Then it's Cleese again when he's down to just a torso. Cleese said the scene was hard as all hell to film, too.

@@jgaringan Starts off with Cleese with all the limbs until he loses a leg. Then it's an actual one legged man, then it's Cleese again when he's on the ground. He said having his arms bound by his costume and being half buried in the ground was utterly miserable. If you look closely, you can see that his torso is slightly bigger than it was when he had his arms, due to them being stuck at his sides.

Terry Gilliam said it was Cleese until he loses his leg. They then used a real one legged actor. They used a marionette for when he loses his other leg and back to the one legged actor when he is on the ground. Gilliam joked that they saved production costs because they only had to dig one hole for him to stand in instead of two holes if they had used an actor with two legs.

I love how you clocked Eric Idle (Brave Sir Robin) doing multiple parts, but didn't notice that the rest of the knights were also doing multiple parts. All the main speaking parts are divided between like five guys. You can for example tell that Lancelot is also the voice for the Black Knight, and the same guy who plays the sorcerer Tim, and the french soldier.

@@HelloMellowXVI . yes, they had no money for more than the one horse that we see when the professor/historian is killed, so to add an extra layer to the jokes, they chose to go all in with the coconuts that often was used as props to add the sound of horses in movies in the old days.

Not just the horses. Look at Lancelot's chain helmet.. It's actually cloth that was stitched in the chainmail pattern because they blew most of their budget on the one castle shot from multiple angles. The ends over his chest are sticking up a bit. Also, Camelot really was just a model, that's why, after Patsy says 'it's only a model', Arthur looks at him and goes "SHH!"

Also, that's pretty much par for the course for Monty Python. The majority of the roles are played by the core Pythons (Chapman, Cleese, Idle, Gilliam, Jones, and Palin) with only a handful of semi-regular supporting performers (especially Carol Cleveland, who played Zoot and Dingo, and Connie Booth, who played the witch).

If you ever had a chance to watch their TV show, "Monty Python's Flying Circus", you would understand the suddenly interrupted ending of the movie. They did that with a lot of their sketches, especially when there was no better way to close out a sketch. They often did things differently than everyone else did before, or has done to this day.

@Alex Well I mean they would decide the outcome THAN test it. Most often in scenarios like a trial they would torture the person until they confessed than rubber stamp the guilty verdict. My favorite judicial methods of the period were trial by faith and judicial duels. The faith based would be to perform insane tasks and see if you survived. Like carrying a boiling cauldron around. Oddly many of the successful litigants would later expire of, totally unrelated, their extensive injuries or infection that would surely follow.

For a non-comedy that is set in a medieval fantasy setting, I recommend "Willow" starring Warwich Davies and Val Kilmer. Also you should definitely check out Excalibur for an old movie retelling of the Arthurian legend featuring actors like Liam Neeson, Helen Mirrim, Patrick Stewart, and others. 9:31 In most of the scenes the Black Knight is played by John Cleese (who also plays sir Lancelot, the French Taunter, Tim the Enchanter and many others in the movie). For the scene where the Black Knight has one leg, they hired a local blacksmith who happened to have one leg. The final scene where the Black Knight had no limbs left, the dug a hole in the ground where John Cleese could stand in and put the costume over him.

Watching someone else's joyful reaction to this movie is at least as funny as seeing it yourself. You gotta see everything Monthy Python!

I agree, but I must say that The Flying Circus hasn’t aged well. A lot of the political jokes are lost to most people at this point. But there are still enough silly skits that make it worth sitting through it. My suggestion would be Fawlty Towers. Still my favorite!

The wedding scene those where people on a day trip to the castle they asked if they could be in the movie. I would of loved it.

I remember sitting around in college, in the 1970s, laughing our asses off recalling this film and all it's crazy funny one liners. "Strange women, lying around in ponds, handing out swords is no basis for a form of government"! It's funnier talking about it, than actually watching it. So Great!

for the black knight scene they found a farmer who actually lost both his arms and a leg, so they only dug 1 hole in the ground to simulate that he lost both his legs, the farmer was more than willing to help in the movie

I've seen this movie so many times, but seeing you watch it for the first time almost made me feel like i was seeing it with new eyes again. Thank you for uploading this! :D Also, if you like Monty Python and the Mel Brooks movies, you should definitely watch Yellowbeard. It stars actors from Monty Python and Young Frankenstiein, plus many more greats.

This was 1975 and I rushed to the cinema and watched it at least twice. John Boorman's movie Excalibur came out in 1981 and was a fairly straight retelling of Arthurian legend. It has brutal battle scenes which, when I saw it, were greeted with gales of laughter and cries of 'It's only a flesh wound' as limbs were lopped off on all sides. The Python team had out played an epic on about 1% of the budget and it's still as fresh and funny today.
